Can we be heroes?

I would actually prefer if mmo's went the way of you being a hero not the hero.
So it doesn't just recognise what you have or haven't achieved, but around you they recognise what others have.

It also does away with things like (for immersion) everyone running around in a fake copy of your AF as your the only one who has the real one >.<;

something like dynamisis and top 8players get turned into badasses that are the players that hold the 1 mob that needs that party of 8 to stay alive for the rest to help kill it. that can make you feel a little cool being picked in. i know i loved being part of the huge group in warhammer.

also for those that keep mentioning gw2 that game is a solo game with online ability, it sucks ass and nothing makes you feel like a hero and if you do then it's all in your head ...sorry for rudeness if that is how i come off on this subject. i hate that mmo.

Actually, if you compare the first part of the storyline (until the encounter with the Black Wolf) to the second part (the Grand Company portion), it already went in the direction of making us heroes.

The vision of the story Tanaka's team had put the player in the (rather boring) position of the bystander. The path companion and even Tancred and the others were more in a leading role.

With the coming of Yoshida and the new grand company storyline we're definitely put in the position of the heroes, we're the ones bringing the grand companies together, killing van darnus, and making the summoning of the twelve possible. While Lou dies heroically, he's more in the position of the wize adviser than in that of the actual hero of the story, that in this issue is definitely our character.

The funny part is that when I wrote a thread to ask exactly this when the grand company story was still far from appearing, quite a few people opposed it very radically (to the point of insults and personal attacks). While i have no doubt that most of it was fruit of irrational white knighting, i still found it rather hilarious that some did NOT want to be the hero of the story of a game. Luckily Yoshida went the way I hoped. Not all the way, but he did quite a few of the things I asked. Maybe he'll do more with ARR.

Yoshida said that he will be requiring us to level a battle class to be able to proceed with the main story for this reason. The reason we were so passive in the original storyline was because you could proceed as DoL/DoH as well, so they had to script the sequences from that viewpoint.

The GC storyline was already a step into right direction, especially the fight against the Raven.
