The music was probably the biggest highlight in the video for me. I get what people say that it's not very Final Fantasy like, though. Final Fantasy songs tend to have very distinct melodies, whereas this track feels more like background music, with a very subtle melody.
I can't help but find it gorgeous, though. And I love that there's different movements. My biggest complaint with the current songs is that they're often way too short. Hearing the same two minutes over and over again, can make any song feel annoying after a while, regardless if it's good or not.
Personally I think it's great.
The new theme kind of gives me the same feeling the music in "generic MMOs" give me for some reason. I can't really tell what is it that gives it that feel, it just has it...
I love the music...it reminded me of Final Fantasy...and I have played them all >.> It really gave me the FF12 feel though!
It gives you that feeling because it's something new. As opposed to something you've been used to since you started playing. 2 years for some players like me.
And to anybody complaining about too many ambient noises, you missed out on the point during the 25th Anniversary demo that there is more of a focus on ambient noises this time around. Especially when not in a city or stronghold where the field just loops the same song over and over and over.
That's not necessarily the case every time. Back in XI, they always (ALWAYS) felt right from day one (and they actually grew tiresome with time, not nicer except for a handful of them). Every new theme sounded great and fitting, something I've never seen in the cookie cutter MMOs most people are used to. That new Gridania theme gives me the same feeling from said cookie cutter games. :/
Have to agree... Feels generic and, westernised.
I'll have to disagree. It sounds quite Final Fantasy to me.
Just because it isn't Justin Bieber...
Anyways, I favor this track more than Uematsu's, but both are really well done and fit the environment, as previously claimed. It feels more like a lean towards FFXII, the music gets soft, and then it feels strong, and the transition between those is barely noticeable.
Also, this song does have many feels. >_>
Was there confirmation that Uematsu isn't handling ARR music? Who is?
I like the music.
I think perhaps it could do better in a more magical ancient place with stone (not wood), the intro feels like perhaps im entering a happier/lighter mood part of castle in the sky and the sunrays / godrays are being peeled back like curtains as I turn the corner into a wondrous courtyard with exciting interactions between the magical structures and its environment but then the music slows and so do you, that is when you just enjoy the scene and breath.

Thats what I think at least.
Mute the game every time you enter Gridania. Problem solved.
I love the new Grid music! It fits the location perfectly.
I have to admit, I've been replaying the video in another tab while reading the forums just so I can listen to the music. So.....yeah. You could say that I like it.
Grid new music is great, and suits the series well for a starting town.
I can see this music played in Balamb, or practically any starting area in FFXII. Old Gridania (I'm not sure if its the same soundtrack or different) gives the place of a city and traditions long gone by, like the music of Fisherman's Horizon.
music is nice imo, but I'm more surprised by the environmental sounds, I might try the game out without any BGM just to check the difference from current version.
Dude for BGM that matches those images from Laputa is Chrono Trigger http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNzYIEY-CcM
1: I'm not Klaus Volka 2: I'm not just looking for something to complain about. 3: I sincerely just think the music is something that will stick in our heads like any other Town music in Fantasy. That can work in a zone, but for a town? It has to be monumental. We spend hours on end and we become so attached with music to express nostalgia. When a song has no feeling I personally think the Game loses it's touch. I know people agree. Heck, we all more than likely played ffxi and who can say the music wasn't a big impact?
Well that is the theme song for Zeal :P (Zeal ~= Laputa ^_^), but now I know what I can be doing while FFXIV is down ;D
Anyway felt the new grid song would work well with stone architecture since the wood doesn't hold "grandiose"y sounds and should feel more down to earth (not a musician so I cant explain why I feel that way lol). That being said it really isnt jarring for me and I like the song regardless so its not something I even care to make a thread of outside of making posts in threads already talking about music.
Also lets get hardcore:

Recollections was not a "Starting Town" kind of Music. It would honestly be overly depressing if it was.
As for the actual ffxi music in town. No it wasn't "stick in my head" variety.
Not everything has to be a reference to some other title of Square Enix. We wouldn't have new stories if they did.
It's funny because FFXIV's original music was as Final Fantasy as it could get, yet everyone complained. Now they're mad that this music isn't traditional FF music.
Just goes to show what kind of people the devs are trying to please. Keep crying.
One part that I'm bit confused is for ARR sound tracks if Nobuo-san is working on some of them or it's all Soken and others since I remember reading Nobuo-san only agreed to doing FFXIV was if and only he can compose all of the music himself. (Originally) and all the new music since the team change I haven't really seen Nobuo-san's 'new' stuff yet.
I love the song personally suck it haters o,o
to each their own. i LOVE it.
He's not doing any of the music. Square holds the rights to the pieces he wrote for FFXIV 1.0 and they have since been re-arranged by their new group of composers. Also, when I say re-arranged, I don't mean placing tracks in different areas. I mean in musical composition terms [Example of this is Zahar'ak Stronghold]. Though I know they have literally arranged music and implemented them in different areas.
So far, the tracks are completely new and written by SOKEN. If you hear any early 1.0 tracks, they will either be Nobuo tracks remastered (because the original sound quality is just horrid) or Nobuo tracks with a re-arrangement by SOKEN and the sound team. Nobuo is long gone from this project and I can't say I blame him. They had him compose the soundtrack off of concept and not seeing the zones themselves which gave some of the game's areas a weird feel and it wasn't cohesive. The tracks were all over the place.
A completely new soundtrack is what this game needs to tie it together. That doesn't mean they need to completely trash the Nobuo tracks, they just need to edit them with instrumentation that fits with their new soundtrack.
I don't hate the music but I got more of a Lord of the Rings mixed with general fantasy game town music from it.
I love it! One of the things I dislike most about the current game is the music is too grande (especially the chocobo music) it takes over everything and I have to turn my speakers down. Grande music is fine.. but after you hear the song over and over it gets so tired. I'm really looking forward to a soundtrack that's in harmony with the game! And It's Totally FF and Square, Gridania reminds me so much of Secret of Mana now, it's wonderful!
Must complain! And insult. . . . let's not forget I have to insult, preferably with a pinch of sarcasm & smartass! If that fails, I must pretend I am better than everyone else and also know better, cause I'm a pro at everything. Otherwise, I fail on the forums, which is, like, totally unacceptable. . . . Gurrr, I'm so mad!
(joke aside, I loved the new Grida music) <3
It's certainly better than the original Gridania music, to be fair. I think the ambience tends to suit it much better to be honest.
To say it's "garbage" is a bit of an overstatement really.
I absolutely LOVE the new music for Gridania in the 2.0 alpha video... exhibits that the city has a new fresh ambience, has survived Dalamud, and is thriving towards a better future. Highly fitting and I love it.
BTW, Dev Team, definitely extend my appreciation to the entire music composers, the sound crew and to the mighty Soren for a job bloody well done.
Just because it's "fitting" doesn't mean it's good and certainly doesn't mean it's memorable. To me it just sounds like horribly generic fantasy music and it's completely lost any personality it had. Ask me how any of the current city's music goes and a lot of us could probably hum them all, I don't think that will be the case now.
EDIT: In retrospect, I don't think the current Grid music is all that great either.
Gridania's ARR music is great, and It fits its location perfectly. It is soothing, and calm just the way nature should be.
