No it does not work in reality and it does not work for the internet. Anonymity is hurting the future viability of the internet.

As are you.
Anonymity on the internet has done much good for the world itself. If everyone behaved as they did on the streets we would all be worse for it and often oblivious to the world around us and especially the flaws of ours and other governments.
*edit*
You also seem to think that the lack of Anonymity would make people not "Bully" online, face it people "Bully" with their names known all the time as well making your name known will do little to curb the real issue.
I am guessing that is not your main character, since you have only 1 level 50. no one needs help with an AF run since you only need 4 to enter any dungeon. Do a quick check, "need any help with a CC speed run" or "Need any help with Garuda" would have been more appropriate and you could have figured it out with a simple search of the lodestone. that is how i figured out you were posting from a secondary character you created last month.
how about you stop hiding behind your alts and actually post with your main account.
Bullying is a hot topic issue right now, and all of you who have been watching oprah instead of working have had your sensitivity overcharged. You think that any behavior you do not like is "bullying" and you think that it somehow needs to have repercussions that far exceed the crime. The popular anti-bullying campaigns and programs that are distributed in the public schools of the United States actually increase the rate of so called bullying, mainly by glorifying the victim.
The situation is not that someone is being physically harmed, the situation is that they have been pandered to all of their lives and told that they are a special snowflake. now someone tells them that they do not want to help them or be friends, or there is competition for limited resources and the knee-jerk reaction is to call that person a bully, garner support by closed mindedness and non though processes because once you call someone a bully, you have painted a scarlet letter upon them and all of your like minded people who will not think about the situation will automatically join you in your chorus, effectively making you the bully. it is the tyranny of the weak.
also: nom nom nom, this is yummy
your the reason why the internet will soon enough be policed and locked down for all to use freely. can't ignore them? your just as angry as they are then. what you want people going to jail or getting tickets on the net for doing and saying the wrong things like speeding tickets? it's like micro chipping our selves for the 1percent that go missing. it ain't gonna go good cause both sides of this fence.
bullying wrong but so is pitchforks against them. 1 alpha male is no different then 20 non alpha's running a muck. don't try to replace the world with meme's like u'rself. ignoring doesn't work then do something about it, don't ruin something as simple as a game for your own thoughts of right and wrong.
for all we know since she wasn't part of the bullying that it could of been misunderstanding, i've heard some borderline retarded convo's in my linkshells that sound like bullying but they just back and forth like that for fun. it's not for everyone, surely not me, but being able to get people banned or anything like that for it is over the top. blacklist and have a good day.
also everything huggin said is on the nose.
You're wrong, sorry. In reality if you add a person to your blacklist you never see their messages again, you just don't want to and would rather have an INTERNET CYBER POLICE FORCE get revenge on them for you... have some will power and ignore them then move on with your life
Ricky/Azran, we will have to give it up, these are people who would give up their freedom and liberty in exchange for security. The kind of people who think only the police should have weapons. you will never get through to them, they are lost.
they do not want anonymity because "if you have nothing to hide, then you do not need to worry." just ask them if it is OK to hae police walk into their homes at any time, in fact, why have walls at all?
Nonsense.
I've been able to currently take on 7 completely different persona because of it, expanding my understanding without fear of being shut out from presumption. And never have I made a character dedicated to upsetting people.
Don't let a few bad apples spoil the orchard, throw them out when you come to them and move on.
OMFG we agree on something <wahoo>
Do the people who walk on the wrong side of the street annoy you like they annoy me? Stick to the right people, it aint that hard.
And those texters (or w/e they call themselves), every other day, one stands in front of me at the traffic lights, waiting for the light to turn green so we can walk across. There they are, texting on the bb oriphone, light changes, they keep on texting. Sometimes, I wanna just nudge them. lol
Lets leave RL bullying out of this for now.
Did I mention that I took a yr off from this POS game, and came back to a different server, to re-learn it.
I was on SELBINA origionaly, then was kidnapped, and taken to Ridil. My main is on Ridil, and I am only on Balmung to re learn the game, and stay away from the retards and religious fanatics on Sargantas.
Anyway, on to the subject of in-game bullying:
I can't comment on the OPs situation, as I do not know the details. Since coming back to the game, the only precieved instances of bullying I have witnessed was a shout in uldah a while back. So let's go with a hypothetical situation for now.
Bob is a healer in a party
party goes to a dungeon
party wipes
Joe who was in party returns to uldah and /sh Bob you fckn NOOB where were my heals
the Joe does /sh welcome to my blacklist NOOB
then Joe tells his LS what a NOOB Bob is
soon most of the server thinks Bob is a bad healer and won't invite him to parties
Comment ?
Not my problem.
If they're smart they'll ignore him too and it won't be their problem either.
If you don't feed the beast, it will crawl in circles screaming and crying for attention till it withers up and dies, begging for the only twisted love it understands. Then as you oversee its rotting corpse, you can chuckle in quiet glee.
Well.. i think Bob's kid was crying and he got wife aggro and had to go afk for a short while, unfortunately there is no PAUSE button... so Bob wants to say screw you guys! and Joe is an elitist anyway!
lol, PUGs? no wonder you cant get anything done
om nomnom
Yawns~ /em stretches
Oh for the love of--really? REALLY??!
It won't create more idiots if you don't let it anger you.
If it does, grab a stress ball, write an angry letter and don't save it, paint something angry, exercise (stretch first, I literally can't emphasize this enough), dance, scream into a pillow, talk it out with someone you trust to listen. You can emote in healthy ways that don't make you into an ass.
Except for the "don't let it anger you" part, I can't say I disagree. People obviously don't control what makes them angry or else no one would ever be. My personal opinion is confronting the person who angers you is the best way to go about it, but that's an opinion and there isn't a truly right way of going about it.
LoL
WTF my LoL is too short a message
this is fckn retarded, how much do I have to write before I can post
is this enough ?
should I write more,
how about a song ?
A very good friend of mine
Told me something the other day
I'd like to pass it on to you,
Cause I believe what he said to be true
He said:
(CHORUS) We're here for a good time
Not a long time (not a long time)
So have a good time
The sun can't shine everyday
And the sun is shinin,
In this rainy city,
And the sun is shinin,
Ooh isn't a pity?
That every year has it's share of tears,
Every now and then it's gotta rain
(CHORUS)
And the sun is shinin,
In this rainy city,
And the sun is shinin,
Ooh isn't a pity?
That every year has it's share of tears,
Every now and then it's gotta rain
(REPEAT CHORUS X 5)
Seriously u seen my Here Ye here Ye thread? If they allowed us to get drunk in game we'd def be in there getting our fame up with karaoke! lmao You'd be the taru always getting me in trouble (O_O) you'd have a 5 o' clock shadow gambling away ur chocobo fare money.. I'd be like damnit Jaime.. get ur ass up! We got dragons to slay, ud be face down on the table shouting for another round from the cute mithran waitress... Or i'd catch you serenading your ex taru lover outside her window, neighbours telling you to shuddap lmao idk.. im bored yo!
lmao.. Drunk ifrit Raid! yeah! Idk, there's SO much potential for games these days, simple basic stuff and yet they all are getting worse & worse? *drops to knees* WHY?! oh cruel world? only thing getting better & better are FPS (first person shooters), and I ish not a fan (>_<) Curses!
Yeah this game is skillless as far as I'm concerned. Wanna fight ifrit watch the youtueb video stand here don't move until... Once people have learned (I mean used google youtube w/e) the patern, there is no skill needed, or armour (seen the reindeer suit bikini videos?) for this "end game" content.
Add some in-game booze SE that will make the game more challenging for some of us.
Wish i had read all this yesterday night.... this completelly true, specially about dont retaliate at them even when one has proof, sadly to me yesterday they just finally got me to rage and i started a whole thread, you know i regret it now, after all i doubt it solved anything and now its made public and in the end my reputation ended even more hurted without get any help, seriously.
This is where rap music comes in handy, quick flip of the playlist and u go off on dem haterz! When keepin it real goes wrong, FFXIV style! WU TANG! dats right mo'foz!
This is wrong in so many ways, let's just start by saying you can't "Do whatever you want" Many people have found this out the hard way.
Can you make an ass out of yourself with no repurcussions...sure, but really that's about as far as internt anonymity is going to get you. Many things you do over the net, can and do have real life repurcussions if you take them too far, and people are far from being untracable unless they are prepared to evade detection (Hinting at something more notorious than just being a internet asshat, that some anti anonymity law wouldn't deter) In the end the only people you end up punishing is the common user who now has to watch what they say for fear of being judged by everyone around them the same way they are in real life.
Being Anonamous online is a much larger boon than a burden to the world, I'd rather let people be who they really are unchained from the idiotic restraints our general society places on us. Race/Gender/Creed rarely have the same impact they do online because we don't usually encounter a person and have the same chance we do when we meet them in real life to impose steriotypes and prejiduces on them before we even know them.
Should Online ID's read like this.
(Made up information...sorry to any Johnathan Hales I mistakenly represent)
Johnathan Hale
28 White Caucasian Male
235 Pounds
6'2
Christian
Or
Jo-Hailmaker
What one of these two descriptions offers nothing to base your own presumptions onto (Unless you hate hail) before you can read/hear what they have to say. Johnathan could be from a repressed millitaristic state and be bringing knowledge to his friends about how bad the situation in his country is with the dictator shooting people in the streets who dare talk about his regime.
With Anonymity John was able to speak out against his opressor, speak to people with far less pre-ordained bias, and perhaps even sway nations around the world to share his plight for freedom of his people.
...or he could be found as his real name is online and be shot in the street. You know that's all worth it so Boobs-Mgee couldn't call Tom-T a jerk on the interwebs.
And I used that same culture to build my confidence by freely testing my opinions and views on societies that could hold no prejudice from affiliation or history. It helped turn me from a little antisocial weirdo into big social weirdo, and I value that to a crazy level.
Just because some people get their feelings hurt by spastic morons doesn't mean everyone should be punished.
well sooner or later we will have xbox and ps3's and games that can read our minds, and i wouldn't doubt a future where snooping into a brain and hearing what they think of you with ease lmao. so i think the way where heading is just fine, it's not what people are, or what they think of you, or how they act/personality as long as we can deal with it ourselves. removing reason is the only way to fix things, not getting a bigger group to get your way. we live together, seperatly or it just won't work.
No, it just creates a situation where anyone could find out who I am and where I live. I had someone find my info online once before who I met on an MMO and it was not a pleasant experience. If my information became openly visible by everyone on this game I'd delete my account and quit and SE would have -1 person playing their game because my personal safety is more important than people getting cyber bullied.
I mean this in all due respect, but put away your keyboard and stop typing. Your view on how the real world works is so damn narrow it's mind numbing.
So.....did anyone ever explain why the blacklist doesn't work? I've never really understood cyber bullying. Compared to real life bullying like someone hitting your or taking your stuff it never seemed like a big deal. It seems a lot easier to avoid/ignore since you can just block/blacklist people online. It's hard to ignore someone actually physically assaulting you or taking your stuff.
Apologies in advance if my post seems unsensitive.
Blacklist doesn't stop someone and his friends from following you spamming /laugh at you.
Blacklist doesn't stop someone from getting his buddies to send horribly rude things to you.
Blacklist doesn't stop someone from spreading lies or bad things about you.
Blacklist doesn't stop someone from MPKing you.
Blacklist only works when or after being bullied and even then it only stops messages and it goes far beyond that.
I've been bullied a little in this game and it's not pleasant and it generally hurts your feelings even if you do blacklist them. I think that's the part you may not be getting, the emotional part of being cyber bullied. The major fix would be just to have a GM service that actually DOES something other than delete forum posts and tell people that they are "investigating the issue" even if it was simply light punishment. Not everyone has thick skin and people do have feelings on the other side of the computer monitor. Though, some other suggestions here are completely bad and unwarranted.
Wow you guys are wimps, you can blacklist to avoid 4 out of 5 of your problems, and if someone MPK you, you can just do it right back or leave the area and try whatever you were doing at a later time
If someone seriously does all that stuff to you, you did something to deserve it most likely... I have played online games for like 12 years and I have never experienced people doing such crazy things
and responding to trolls counts as "something to deserve it" imo
This what Real Id would prevent. If someone had to face the idea that everyone could see the kind of person they are online they would fall back on the same social niceties that enables us as a society to get along. Now I know some worry about the security risks involved, but there are good solutions to that as well.

Instead of MPK'ing I'd rather put them in GM jail for 24-72 hours. It makes no sense to do the same thing they do just to get a sense of satisfaction. If harassment goes unpunished the offenders will just keep doing it. Besides its the GM job to keep a safe, and friendly social environment.

This is invalid. Your conclusion does not flow from your premises at all. People "being unrestrained" does not support the statement that being anonymous is a boon to the world. Even formed in a categorical format it doesn't work.

This is question begging. After this you strawmanned the argument while rocking the slippery slope with your argumentum ad oppression concept.
I understand your viewpoint and can even appreciate it (to an extent) but it's invalid. There are reasons for why this shouldn't be the case but these aren't them.
