Wow, Wuk Lamat is really single-handedly ruining the DT story...

Feels absurdly jarring when they try to paint wuk as an underdog while simultaneously having the saviour god warriors of existence in her back pocket just doing her bidding because.....garlemald......a random plot letter.....adventure?

Like one of the most frustrating things for me was when erenville asks if you really for sure want to support wuk. The answers are yes.....or serious yes.....

Not even a snarky/witty response. Is it a minor and inconsequential gripe? Absolutely! But its telling of the lack of respect CBU3 has for it's roleplayers, why even call this game an rpg or a final fantasy game at this point when they've strayed so far from the core appeal they advertised on?

I wasn't expecting anything from Dawntrail after the excellent Endwalker.

But this is violent... Why are we on the losing side? I wanted to be on the side of Thancred, Urianger, Estinien. But no, I'm with a potato (but that's okay, Krill, it's okey), the very smooth and uninteresting Alphinaud & Alisae since Endwalker, that was Meh... Whereas I liked them before, as in ShB

But then, we're automatically stuck with the native/barbarian "Princess" (I've got nothing against natives and barbarians, by the way), she knows nothing about life, she's the rough barbarian who thinks about hitting and is afraid of alpacas!

Well, I chose the merchant people part, thinking: I might as well start with the worst of the two choices, and I got what I wanted... it bored me so much that I started reading diagonally and skipping the dialogues quickly... I feel like dying...




And then, this new capital here, it's a grandiose city in size, but it's still just a city made from King Size dung... And I wasn't exactly expecting to hear Jazz as an OST when I arrived in a big city that we all know represents South America. I was thinking the whole time that the devs had got the atmosphere wrong, it couldn't be.

I hope the part with Tural's Vanu Vanu will be better...


Ps: Me, I'm living the expansion in travel mode and at my leisure anyway, once the MSQ is finished, we'll just have to wait for the next big patch, so take it easy.

By the way I loved Lyse, she was the good friend who found herself at the head of the resistance, a matter of taste, but my interest lies in an ARR quest where you follow the adventures of a rugged barbarian who never leaves her palace.


Ps": My best memories so far: The sea voyage on a ship and the best hostel room in FFXIV, that view of the open beach, yeah! I'm on vacation! I think.

Reading the dialogue is putting me to sleep. I feel like I’m wasting my time watching the cutscenes. Running around to different spots in the first city is such a waste of time.

She's actually been better behaved than I thought she'd be, and less annoying than anticipated. Still has a few moments but XIV in general has always had some cheesy "comedy" moments.

So far not a fan of her. I feel FF14's writers need to take a look as some other series like Tales, Trails, Xeno to get some inspiration on how to write "flawed" character. I understand they want to reserve room for development but that doesn't mean you have to create a flat and pathetic character in the beginning. Even the average shounen is better than this "I gonna have an identity crisis every other cutsceen" crap. The worse thing about this is it has a knock on effect on other characters, especially the twins. It was already bad with Zero but now, it feels like both of them should change their classes into "preachers" because it feels like that's what they do most of the time, and it's getting really old and repetitive. I would comment on the overall writing in general, but that ain't it. Scene/dialogue that doesn't involve the WoL, the twins and Wuk Lamat actually feel ok, but scenes that do usually give me this sense of de javu of "haven't we have this exact same dialogue 100 times before already?"

Then there is the role quests ... I said this before and I'll say this again, FF14's writers can write good stories ... but my god it feels like they only know how to write ONE type of story. I know it's a weird thing to say but ... can we get quests that's purely about the objectives? Not every quests have to turn into a personal identity crisis. Like 10% of the quest text is about the actual objective and the other 90% is always about some personal introspection. Like ... I understand it's considered to be a higher level of writing, but when everything is special than none of them are special.

She is not a great character but she isn’t single handedly ruining the story. The story is just starting too slow. I think I played 3 hours and nothing happened aside from walking around and cutscenes with the weakest cast members of the scions. Honestly a bit bored. I haven’t had any combat even in these hours at all.

Reminds me when I quit in early Stormblood when the story was super dull in the low to mid 60s.

You know that is what people told me about Alphinaud. He grows and develops you will judge him differently later. Well I am Halfway through Shadowbringers and I still can't stand the kid. Different strokes for different folks.

I thought I was the only one. I had to stop playing after getting the 2 aether current quests in the first zone in Kozama’uka. I couldn’t stomach the slow plot. Go there click that come back click this. For what? The plot has no mystery or meat to keep my attention. I lost it when I had to emote 3 NPCs. Zeros plot was more interesting except for her taking 100 patches to eat food and learn to trust. I feel like they brought the most boring part of zeros plot and pasted onto the beginning of Dawn Trail.

On top of the most boring map design so far and more aether currents I just had to stop playing. I use to take vacation time off for a week for this stuff. The plot had me hooked on the story and lore. I wanted to know more. I’m glad I didn’t for this one.

It seems like after the end of 6.0 the mystery is gone and now it’s just short plots with no flavor. They tried to build you with zero but they focused on the her instead of the villain more.

I do think, that Erenville will have much more to the plot than Wuk Lamat. I think, she's just the main "goal" during the trip. Also, quests are a bit padding. It's a very slow start, but then again, there is no need to rush the story. Maybe, it's time to take your time for once and enjoy the small things. Or don't, I guess.

A lot of content is locked behind progressing the story. A lot of us have run all the content up until now to death and we are eager to get to new things to do. This one is just harder to get through and less captivating to some here.

It's a fundamentally bad idea to make a plot revolve so heavily around a singular character because if people happen to not like that character, it's gonna be a hard miss for them.

The player and the Scions just feel like Wuk's pep squad with how out of focus they are compared to the previous expansions.

I picked the second area first and jesus was she annoying, I had to stop and start 3 times. That being said I was already a negative about this expac due to how bad the jobs are, but this just reconfirmed by decision to unsub, just gonna grit my teeth for the next 8 days see if there is any story there to enjoy and then wait till 8.0 see if they made the game not bad.

Yeah I also get some lost prince of Khaenri'ah, I mean Tural, vibes.
I do like him though, he is the best thing about DT so far.

Anyway, I don't hate Wuk in Japanese. She sounds really cute there but the writing seems clumsy. I'm not that far in yet but the amount of time they repeated that sea sickness joke was just so contrived... I hope that's not how it continues...
In principle don't mind her having to grow and being a bit of a big mouth to cover up her insecurity, but from what I read I fear they aren't really pulling it off well?

Also, for me this is the first time I'm not hooked at all by the start of an expansion. The beginning on the ship felt so needlessly dragged out. Normally I play the story non-stop because it pulls me in so much that I want to know what happens next automatically. But now I have to force myself to continue and keep doing other stuff.

I think from what I’m seeing while the quests are rather slow either way the alpaca village is much better than the vanu village both from a map design and how tedious (or lack thereof) the quest design is

I’m usually on the critical side of square and while I think it’s a little slow I’ve so far had little problem with the alpaca side

If this ends up being all the way to 97 then yeah I’m probably gonna end up sick of it but for the moment it’s good world building and is giving a better arc to wuk lamat than lyse got

I grew to like her eventually, since she has actual character growth during MSQ.

As for VO, there were criticisms about it after reveal, but other characters also have inconsistencies with delivery of this Tyrali accent, so even that feels OK.

Yeah her character is annoying and I'm not a fan of her voice. I'm having a hard time getting through the story because of it. I don't like being forced to support her.

They went for an idyll and put it in a combat-oriented game. Way too much and way too quickly is solved with the power of friendship and love ;)

This is the worst MSQ this game ever had, by a wide margin. It's worse than every 6.X. Hell, it even makes 6.X look good in comparison. I hope SE feels bad about it, there are no excuses.

Yeah having recently did stormblood again I think the Lyse hate was overblown. The Yda to Lyse thing was contrived yeah but as far as her character goes I think she had good growth. She was put into a position of power at a time when she didn't want it or think she was right for it after Conrad's demise. But as time went on she learned how to lead properly, even had help from Raubahn..

Contrast that with Wuk who is foolish and annoying from the start. It's strange that she wants to be the leader but has such little experience with the lands of Tural. She needs really basic concepts explained to her like how trading works. I don't think there was ever a time when Lyse was told "Hey don't do this" and then she runs off and instantly does the thing she was just told not to do. This has unfortunately happened with Wuk.

For Lyse I had no strong feelings one way or the other.

But Wuk... I suppose the best I can describe in short form is an incompetent chuunibyou with ADHD.

Interesting how opinions can vary. I can't imagine anyone finding her "obnoxious." She's quirky and endearing to me. It's a change of pace from many of the other characters, and to me a welcome one. If Alphinaud had an unfortunate accident and drowned in a bog, that would greatly improve the MSQ for me. Wuk Lamat is a breath of fresh air.

When I tell folks on Discord that people in the FFXIV forums don't just, not like something, but launch right into a "The west has fallen. Billions must die" mentality... this... this is what I mean lol

I'm not very far into it, finished the firT two halves of the 2 zones, and assume dungeon coming soon.

She is slowly growing on me, I found her annoying at first, but she has potential, if she keeps growing as a character, which the msq currently is all about

I'm not super far in yet, thanks to Elden Ring DLC being so baller, and my time being so limited.

However, I'm already not a big fan. There was a dialogue option to basically tell her, "Yeah, that's not how we should go about this." And then she replies with a humma-humma, "But it's not a bad idea!" And the twins are like, "Well, it may not be the best idea but Wookie is the candidate, not us, so we gotta follow along and hope for the best!"

And I had to go to bed cause I needed at least 5 hours sleep before my 45 minute commute, but where I left off at, it seems like it's all gonna come together and just work out for her, but perhaps G'raha Mint Chocolate Chip edition is also gonna share some credit for finding the meatier solution to the problem.

To be honest, whilst am not too far into the new content, have to say..... there is definitely truth in the old adage about not being able to please everyone!

Endwalker: "The Scions are all too alike! They're hyper competent! I hate that there is almost no difference in their personalities! Almost all of them are Sharlayan graduates! They have all the answers...." etc etc

Dawntrail: "I hate Wuk-Lamat - she's annoying, doesn't know anything and wants us to feel sorry for her".

I actually LIKE her and am not going to apologise for that. I think she was exactly the change we needed! She isn't perfect, doesn't have all the answers (in fact seems to rely on US having them) and, at the time I wrote this, her combat prowess was lacking. And you know what? GOOD!
I mean, seriously? They give us a character who is nothing like the Scions - which is pretty much exactly what a lot of people asked for - and it's STILL not good enough?

I certainly didn't. My problems with Endwalker have to do with the story itself and not the characters in it.

It's very early on yet, but so far I have absolutely nothing in this Dawntrail story to hook me. The story is flat-out uninteresting, the main character we are following around like lost puppies has no business being leader and we have no business helping her. I'm sure there will be growth at some point and she'll become a good leader down the line...but why are we here? What about Wuk inspired us to travel across the world and actively try to do what we are doing?

Literally nothing about her did. We are basically being the Sharlayan CIA and trying to install a leader that's not gonna make problems for Eorzea/the rest of the world, whether that's best for Tuliyollal or not.

She's basically our "useful" idiot in that she gets us into Tuliyollal with little hassle, and I've heard from some no-lifers that she grows admirably as the story progresses. But I'm pretty sure they're just in honeymoon phase with FFXIV and are being charitable because they're having fun.

I'm not too far into the MSQ yet, but I feel like this is the plot of Tommy Boy.

The problem isn't that she's stupid, there are plenty of well written stupid characters in fiction, whether that be Hodor, Naruto, the Hulk or Forrest Gump. The problem is that it never works well to have a character whose sole defining trait is their stupidity. In order to not just annoy viewers they need some connective character trait so the viewer/player can feel a hook and look past their stupidity (or goofiness) and find them lovable (for want of better term). She's pretty shallow at this point and hasn't really shown any such trait, she hasn't struggled or been persecuted like a Hulk or a Hodor so you can't feel bad for her, she also isn't really earnest or oblivious or loyal or courageous like Forrest or Naruto so you can't see her as "worthy". You may find some element of relatability in her which is good, so she'll be a good character for you but a lot of other people see no real trait other than "goofy and stupid" which works badly by its lonesome.
