Leveilleur and Co. said we should. Therefore we shall. Because we have no free will, we are the puppet, the scions are the puppeteer.
Ehh disagree pretty hard on that. While also sudden (it had longer buildup than DT's, but still quite sudden), ShB's hook was dire as hell for the story at that point. Your close allies keeling over outta the blue at such a critical point in the story is both a way more intriguing and a way more personal justification for a new expansion than "hey, the fellas on the other side of the ocean might attack Eorzea if we don't see what's popping over there? Maybe? But nvm that, adventure!"
When I was getting to ShB I wanted to see what happened to the Scions, wanted to know why our offensive was getting screwed over by a dude in a robe, and what would Garlemald do with such an unexpected advantage being given to them in a silver platter. For DT I don't have that kinda emotional investment, y'know?
Once we got into Dawntrail they better do a proper intro to it all. Because the one at the end of Endwalker isnt enough. The story about Golbez and Zero can be considered short and yet when it started it had more depth than Wuk Lamat who's supossed to be the focus for an entire expansion. They have to be careful with this. With Golbez at least some of older FF fans have familiarity about him so they can kinda rely on nostalgia too. Wuk Lamat is a complete stranger to us all and need an indept back story.
What’s annoying about this whole succession crisis is it’s only going to go one of three ways with the fourth way that I want it to go being beyond square
1) we will rigidly stick to wuk lamat because the WOL gets no agency
2) Wuk will informally drop out early and we end up supporting the one Wuk throws in behind
3) something with solution 9/the city of gold makes the crisis irrelevant and they all end up allied
I’d rather us go to tural meet the other 2 non warmonger candidates and then actually get to throw our support behind the one we want
The hook for DT is so short and meaningless they have given us zero reason why we shouldn’t support koana and right now knowing what I know I’d much rather support koana over Wuk
Not sure how I feel about this character yet. Atm shes the most annoying one of all NPCs added since 1.0 imo. The voice is just really grating in my ears sadly in the english version. :/
I dont see her being worthy as a leader as things are atm.
At least she's not Lyse, thats enough for me.
I just realized that we traveled to Kugane, Sharlayan, and Dawntrail by boat. I wonder if we'll also reach Meracydia by scheduling a boat.
Those three ways are probably all going to happen. We're going to spend time in her corner helping her beef up for the contest, she'll realize on her own that she's not the best choice, and the actual plot that shows up later will unite most of the candidates aside from probably the mean two-headed guy.
I assume they have plans for some of the characters beyond this one part of the plotline so if they let you crown Koana and me pick Wuk Lamat then your Wuk and my Green G'raha would have to be sidelined to the shadow realm or the continuity would start to spiral out of control from 7.1 and beyond.
Oh, I know. It's because we are the Warmonger of Light. We make sure we don't do enough or act or help idiots. By doing so we make sure we have more people to murder. Levithan only got summoned because we silently stood there watching.
This is the forums and the reddit people ngl
As for why? We shouldnt. The reason probably wont be a good one during the msq. We’ll be forced to help whether or not we want to. She is very annoying so if I had the chance I would help any other person. We got monster dudes or a catboy we could root for.
It feels particularly silly now that they've spelled out that both Koana and Zoraal Ja have actual credentials that would make them potentially good leaders.
I'm not sure why they're even pursuing the "illusion of choice" angle with the 6.55 MSQ letting you say you'll wait and see before deciding whether or not you're getting involved because it'll just feel more aggravating when you are inevitably forced to play along.
I think that’s a big problem with what they have chosen to reveal so far
Wuk lamat credentials basically amount to “I don’t want the warmonger on the throne and I’m going to use the WOL to make sure that doesn’t happen”. So basically she doesn’t have to win the two headed mamulja just has to lose. However 6.55’s hook was weak and did nothing to show off wuk’s competency. If anything it painted her in a bad light
Now we suddenly have the credentials of the two other “good candidates”
Koana- pros- amazingly smart and archon of sharlayan who wants to use technology to improve the lives of the people of tural
Cons- could be argued to be a carpetbagger (I don’t know if this is common political terminology or unique to Australia so it basically means someone with no connection to the local area gets dropped into the area by the political party just assuming they will win on name alone) and also might not respect tradition
Single headed mamulja- pros- good war commander and had the respect of the common soldiers so is likely to have the power to maintain stability
Cons- may struggle with diplomacy
When I have the choice between those 2 and the intrigues both bring what is wuk lamat actually offering here
The curse of a filler arc taking too long and the setup arc not taking long enough. Hopefully SE realizes that for future expansions and doesn't do that again.
As for Wuk Lamot, my WoL is more intrigued by the prospect of visiting Tural moreso than anything else, but if we get a tournament arc I feel obligated to demolish the competition. As a player I am interested in seeing Wuk's character develop though.
We were also surrounded by sahagin and Serpent Reavers in sufficient numbers to hold the WoL, Thancred, Y'shtola, Yugiri, Merlwyb, and a small unit of Maelstrom troops at bay. And Merlwyb kept popping the high priest in the head the entire time, it just didn't work because he kept body surfing. But sure, we stood by and did nothing.
Let's be honest, most of the time we do just stand there in our battle stance and do nothing.
Obviously this is a consequence of the budget for custom cutscene animations being limited, but it's incredibly jarring nonetheless when we just let the villain monologue and then walk off.
I aint rooting for some lumberjack looking healer clown.
While I agree there is little we could have done against the summoning of leviathan the game does really struggle to align the power of the WOL with what they do in cutscenes
Failing to protect ahawhan because it apparently took us 20 minutes to run 10 steps despite being canonically able to change jobs and getting kidnapped by fandaniel only to be immediately knocked out by we don’t know what are two really good examples of the cutscene WOL being a completely derp compared to the controlled WOL
I want to like her because I enjoy idea of her character (and I actually appreciated that she was visibly afraid during our first fight) but at least in the languages I understand, German and English, the acting is so cringe. I'm sure the voice artists are doing their best but the delivery of the lines is so terrible and unnatural, I just get second-hand embarassment listening to her.
She sounds fine in Japanese and French to me but perhaps that's because I don't speak those languages and are unable to tell if their acting is unnatural.
She is a big cat lady and super optimistic and positive for better or worse. My motivation is hanging out with her as much as I can. :3
That aside, I trust Erenville wouldn't have brought her to us if he'd considered her a really bad choice, good friend to her or no. He has proven himself to be a very responsible person striving for the better of everyone, even at huge personal risk. In a way he vouches for her qualities, or at least for not wasting our time. If the person introducing her would have been Hancock or Nero, I would have noped out, no matter how cute she is.
Wow. Dude wrote a 10 page essay about a character that was in the game for 20 minutes. That type of um...determination(?) in writing is usually reserved for things like a treatise on how to end homelessness or world hunger.
But yeah, let's write a thesis on why buff cat girl that was in a video game for less time to boil an egg is a menace. Even got pictures of Spider-M... I mean Wuk.
Shes' an obnoxious character.
I hate to say it, but Shadowbringers was the best the story is going to get. It's all downhill from here.
It really looked as if Koana was the first raid boss in the raid series.
Jump, Leap, Ranged spell, etc.. We freakin down Primals for fun. Some trash mobs can't stop us.
I see it as returning a favor to Erenville. He helped us out a bunch in EW, and even though he acts like he doesn’t care that much, this is still his homeland we’re going to, and Wuk Lamat is still his friend. It’s obvious she’s being sincere when she talks about them being “thick as thieves” since they were little, and it’s obvious he was disappointed by never finding the city of gold. My WoL is dumb; adventure really is the only reason he needs to go, and though he’s not interested in politics, he knows there are still two other candidates who seemingly don’t want to invade the east, meaning it doesn’t matter who gets the throne as long as it’s not someone who’ll cause them trouble down the line.
So basically it’s:
1. Help Erenville & his friend (who he likes because she is silly like him).
2. ADVENTURE! He’s always wanted to see The New World!
3. Prevent another invasion.
For me personally? Wuk Lamat will have character growth. She’s already set up for a classic fail-to-succeed storyline. She is immature, arrogant, and has what seems to me some kind of trauma-induced fear that makes her freeze up in dangerous situations. All of these things will be overcome over the course of the story to make her suitable to rule. There’s also the possibility she doesn’t become Dawnservant and allows one of her brothers to take over while she supports them. (Personally I’d love that to happen and go on more adventures with her.) So I think the reasoning is clear based on my own WoL’s characterization and my suspension of disbelief because of understanding narrative tropes.
obviously we'll somehow manage to bumble the two other 'noble' candidates into joining Wuk Lamat, because the 4th guy is just that much of an asshole.
Yeah I'm not exactly a big fan of her either. I'm hoping we'll have the option to retract helping her but I know that Square doesn't do choices that matter.
I like her but im super not a fan of how we're immediately on board to help her, apparently. Like it even gives you the option to say eh not so sure yet only for the next cutscene to have everyone immediately be like hey so you're on board right? Like no! I've never been to this place! I know a whole two people from there and one of them I just met like three hours ago!
The WoL should know better than to take people at their word immediately by now, no matter how hopeful or optimistic or whatever we are. There wasn't enough lead up for me to be on board with picking a side in a conflict I've heard exactly one perspective on involving a culture I have no reason to be familiar with up to this point. I'd sooner trust Erenville, so can handwave at least a little bit of the quick trust here, but come on.
I don't OP has heard of a 'character arc' before. Wuk Lamat has flaws that will no doubt be confronted over the course of the MSQ. She may overcome them and rise to rulership- or she might come to realize that she isn't suited for the position and pledge support to someone else.
They're setting her up as the naive-yet-overconfident shonen protag. We've already seen signs that she puts on a brave front and is believing her own hype. Also loves food and eats lots of it, because tropes.
Chances are she will break down during the MSQ and we have to pick her back up and then she'll eventually live up to her own self-image.
Reading helps, just saying.

Of course, basic common sense would inform us that the developers intend to let Wuk Lamat grow as a character. But that doesn't explain why, in the current moment, we as the WoL have any desire to help her become the Dawnservant. Why would we help someone who is at this moment completely unfit to be a leader in terms of temperament?
