More races the better
If all we get are variations of "humans" (with rabbit ear, dragon horns, etc)... I'm fine with the races we have, and instead would vouch for more customization options for them and a definitive fix to the viera/hroth hat situation.
I'd love to see more distinctiveness with a potential new race, but if the compromise is not having a certain item available, like hats because of tall ears, or pants because of a bulky tail, I wouldn't.
You want more lack of hats? This is how you get more lack of hats
Oh man. I'd purchase fantasias for several of my alts just for that.
Respectfully speaking, the whole Qiqirn thing is a weak argument when you take into account we have two feline races. The neko-esque Miqote and the Hrothgar. Burmecians are far more proportionately human-like. As much as I’d love to see them in game, time and resource is the main issue. But I would not give up on the idea.
Given the low population of the other "beast" races Roe and Hroth I doubt we would get anything that isn't cute human type if we do get anything.
We should complete the incomplete races first but if Burmecians ever did become a thing I would hope they kept the digitigrade feet.
While I dont mind adding more races, its an exhausting use of resources for the developers. If they add Burmecians, then folks will beg for Lupin, Bangaa, Seeq, races like whatever the heck Quina & Amarant are, and other Final Fantasy-specific races we dont currently have playable or in game yet.
If we must add more things, I'd rather they added more face options, or even hybrid options for existing races. [akin to Hilda, etc]
The 'no more races' being added is disheartening and makes it hard to look forward to any additions. New jobs just don't interest me. I am likely in the minority though, and I'm also bias coming from WoW (GRANTED they also ignored a ton of race requests but at least there was a huge variety to pick from and some really neat ones added, with the future exciting because anything could be added, really.) Of note, I'm not interested in returning to WoW for a variety of reasons, but that was one of the exciting aspects of it.
That said - I would roll one, yeah! They look adorable. I personally really don't like lalafel, nor do I find them 'cute', but having a tiny race that I'd be willing to play would be fun.
Granted, why these folks rather than the Qiqirn?
My thoughts are for them to deepen the customization on the races we already have instead of adding yet more.
Adding new races is an exciting thing to announce and a feature that helps sell expansions, but it thins the lore and customization for the races we already have, as well as adds ongoing cost to the budget for developing new glamour. I personally hope we never get a new race.
I'm sure the devs understand the value that a race like Hrothgar adds to the game. Races that aren't "pretty" are always lower pop in pretty much every MMO, but you have to keep in mind that many of those people wouldn't be playing the game at all without that option, whereas adding another pretty race largely just shuffles around the players of the current pretty races. Remember how male Viera took a chunk out of the catboy population?
As another example, in WoW the most popular races by a mile are Blood Elves, Night Elves, and Humans. However, the game also lets you play all sorts of freaks like werewolves, minotaurs, zombies, goblins, etc. If Blizzard announced tomorrow that they were deleting all those other races but allowing everyone a free change to the most popular three, how many of them do you think would take it? Maybe some, but I'm guessing most would just quit. Those other races may be less popular but they're bringing in and retaining players who want to play something different.
It is healthier in the long run for an MMO to have a variety of playable races to choose from. IMO that's one of FFXIV's weakest points and hopefully they add more distinctly non-human races in the future. Burmercians would be a great pick as long as they give them the proper rat legs.
It would be amusing to have rat people with so many cat girls. We have even lionesses wandering around.
Hey maybe don't post garbage AI generated "art".
We also need to consider how they can introduce the Burmecians that would fit with the lore. Like for example if they said that the Burmecians came from another star and arrive at the source recently. How would that effect the story from ARR to Dawntrail?
I always assumed they would be tied to Meracydia somehow, given its association with dragons (and by extension possible dragoons), invasions, summons being used as weapons of war, and finally the place becoming a wasteland when Burmecians are known to be able to survive in the desert. It's even mentioned that Meracydia is home to several different, but mostly unknown races so they could pretty much decide to have anything living out there.
Ironic I play a cat girl on my main (and on my alt this character), but I would like a races that weren't just "human but with cat ears, horns, hunny ears, tall human, pony ear human, short human" Hrothgar is the only real race that stands out as different from that formular. I wish there was more playable races like that.
I guess if we were to get a Meracydia people it would either be Burmecians, the tree-like people who worshipped Sephirot, or the centaur-like people who worshipped Zurvan. With likelyhood that two of those three become allied society. Personally I want the plant/tree people, but even I know that is unlikely as getting centaurs.
Presumably Emet-Selch has a line in Endwalker where he asks us if we're aware of the "present state" of Meracydia, suggesting that things have changed noticeably over there since the Allagan invasion.
Interestingly, it's during a quest called "You're Not Alone". While not exactly a nod to the FF9 song, this same quest also has him mention the New World, and while he was specifically talking about the golden cities, that didn't stop the writers from dropping a big old FF9 reference in the later-half of the expansion via Alexandria.
Being a rat people, Burmecians could be one of the races out there that has managed to survive by going underground or just generally being more hearty than the rest, and them being hostile still fits given that the whole reason they split into two and Cleyra came to be in FF9 is because one side became fascinated with war while the other abhorred it. Would not be the first time we meet a race and they're divided between hostile and friendly factions.
Another detail is that Meracydia is supposedly where a great deal of Miqo'te originated from, but most were taken away and displaced during the Allagan invasion. The idea that a rat people grew and flourished in the huge absence of a cat people is an amusing thought even if ancient Miqo'te and Burmecians weren't enemies (as presumably Bahamut had put an end to most squabbles back then until Allagan showed up.)
Hrothgar are very beefy, so a lithe alternative for a beast race would be great. That being said though, the devs should absolutely expand the customization for current races first. I wouldn't expect any news for a new race in 9.0 either, unless square absolutely needs the marketing point.
I feel like this is one of those common lore “facts” that keeps getting passed around but doesn’t seem to exist in the text in or out of game.
Some Miqo’te must have lived in Meracydia at one time or another by some item descriptions, but other playable races did too if we go by the Sophia adds and Tiamat’s mention of “man” traveling to and settling Meracydia.
But in regards to Miqo’te being moved around by the Allagans, they were moved out of Eorzea by them, not Meracydia. And they are said to have returned to Eorzea later on during the Ice Calamity.
I don’t think we have anything concrete about Meracydian Miqo’te other than a couple of item descriptions and wild speculation and nothing at all linking Meracydian Miqo’te specifically to Allag.
I would love the Burmecians to be added to FFXIV, though I'm not optimistic it will ever happen.
That being said, they could just use the Qiqirn race as a base model and then adjust as needed.
(Not sure if these pictures worked, so I tried it two ways...)
