5 pages and no source cited for "west wolves" lmao
I thought the expansion name was already leaked:
"Reapers of the East"
Apparently, Minfilia used to be evil, and we're going back to the past to stop her fulfilling her evil destiny of raising the Ascians from the grave. She's teamed up with like, idk, and evil version of Tataru or something.
Okay but that would be a hilarious name though not gonna lie.
It'd take about four minutes from the reveal for someone to put the trailer to Blue Oyster Cult, and I'd love it, because I'm terrible.
west wolves... sea wolves... a roegadyn expansion it is
Out of curiosity, I went and googled 'Square Enix west wolves'.
Zero actual results. Considering the amount of people that pay attention to trademarks like it's one of their most passionate hobbies, there's no way some random leaker just happened to stumble upon some private trademark thing (if such a concept even exists) without anyone else noticing.
The top link is this fucking thread.
Meanwhile the Forspoken trademark news (along other SE trademarks like 'Harvestella' and 'The Divine Force' before anyone knew the latter was Star Ocean-related) spread like wildfire throughout all the gaming outlets with actual links/images of the exact trademark.
Need to do it as "Square Enix Westwolves" without the space. Looks like it was something posted on 4chan and some of the 4chan users have spread it around a bit into other media.
Likely there is no trademark filing at all (why I said supposedly earlier since i couldn't come up with any other results either).
I'm guessing our prolific local troll decided to use it as fuel for another fire for the lulz. Par for the course.
For context:
Westwolves was initially picked up being registered by Square Enix by a twitter trademark scraping bot on the 6th alongside Slatebound and Starbreakers.
This went unnoticed until Sunday of this past week when it started to gain traction in the XIV community.
Within hours of people starting to take notice of and talk about it, the actual registered trademarks were taken down from the relevant English and Japanese databases and the tweet went missing.
None of you are finding anything because SE, presumably, clamped down on the spread of these three trademarks before more people could see them.
Sadly, no one can provide you proof and all you'll hear from people amounts to hearsay because none of us who -did- see it, thought to take a screenshot of the tweet or the chizai-watch registry page for the titles as who would really think a trademark could be hidden or rescinded after registry? It's a bit unexpected. That said, Skiros fell for the 4chan and twitter born meme of people parroting it as the expansion name, its not confirmed, its just a meme because SE buried it and two other trademarks before they could be caught by media outlets.
Not many of those who are talking about it actually think its the title, its just a fun tongue in cheek meme borne hot off the heels of Endwalker's pre-reveal speculation of being "Forspoken" and we all know how -that- turned out. lol
4chan is running with it like wildfire, but no one actually believes its the title.
We just know it was a trademark SE filed earlier this month.
For once, he's not trolling, but rather fell for the trolling of someone else.
Take that as you will, I find it hilarious, personally.
At least in the US, trademark applications and registrations are required by federal law to be made available for public viewing by USPTO. SE doesn't have the ability to have them removed/hidden. If those applications were filed, they weren't done in the US.
I would expect a JP filing to be picked up with a JP name, not an English name. Expansion titles in other languages usually aren't direct translations of the JP title.
More likely nothing is being found because there never was anything filed in those names.
IIRC the Forspoken filing was filed through JP in Japanese and English. From the quick digging I did, it seems SE usually files through JP first and then files in other regions later. For example, the NA filing for Forspoken happened a whole 4 months after the JP filing.
I have serious doubts that any company has any ability to request to hide/remove trademarks so quickly, considering the amount of bureaucracy you'd have to jump through to file a trademark to begin with (pretty sure the officials managing the filing of trademarks wouldn't entertain the idea of hiding a public one just because people on the internet saw it before they were supposed to), and without any observers taking screencaps of it in order to later write news articles about it at that.
It's more plausible that a trademark might be hidden until it's made public for the first time, like what seemingly happened with Endwalker, and that's probably the exact thing that SE intends to do again here. If indeed things happened as people claimed, whoever manages the filing likely really fucked up big time and somehow made it public enough for a bot to briefly detect it. But the odds of that happening are... Well, I'm currently in camp 'the trademark never existed'. There'd be a bunch of clickbait articles by now if there was ever any evidence that this was anything more than 4chan hearsay.
Which twitter trademark scraping bot was this, anyway?
This could be a mobile game project, you know. SE does do a lot of those. Its possible.
Oh look, turns out this was bullshit, who would have seen this coming?
troll post, it was dawntrial.
Koros? A Troll? Who would have known ect ect...
That's why people love to play false prophet
If it's revealed that prophecy is a lie, the excuse will always be "it's only my specualtion."
It's it's just so happens that the prophecy turns out to true, people can always say "I told you so" while reaping fame and clout.
I'm sorry, but the human sacrifices will stop.
Westwolves will have to be the expansion after the next expansion, followed by Southbunnies, Easturtle and Northduck.
