I just fail to understand people who say things like "Oh Zenos! He's my husbando! I love him so much!"
It sounds like the makings of an abusive relationship.
I mean I like Freddy Kreuger movies, but that doesn't mean I want to bang him.

I don't think they literally want to have a relationship with him lol. I think it's a combination of finding fictional, animated characters attractive becoming normalized and memes. Like the 'step on me' memes. Most people that say that aren't literally wanting an S&M relationship. Same thing with Zenos, people that say he's hot aren't saying they want to have a relationship with a literal psychopath that murders people out of boredom.
I only like Zenos viewing him as a self-insert parallel to players who skip all cutscenes and side content just to do end game raiding savage/ultimate.
He literally skipped all dialogue in Garlemald and fucked over the entire country just to get a good fight
I liked the idea of Zenos in the Stormblood patches/end of Shadowbringers as a third party with his own agenda who throws a wrench into the Eorzean Alliance vs Empire vs Ascian conflict. His unpredictability could have also been used to justify fun scenarios like him being a party member for a couple dungeons. Unfortunately he just lounged around on a chair for two years doing nothing, and then spent almost all of the Endwalker expansion doing nothing.
This. All of this. And I think that most recent scene in the MSQ was the WoL finally acknowledging that he saw us as a friend.
I didn't like him much until Endwalker but I get the reason why now. I did always appreciate how he treated us like a person. So many people around us don't. Even Estinien has kind of jumped on the starry eyed WoL worship. So I enjoy interactions with characters like him and Fordola who bring us back down to earth a bit. I wouldn't mind seeing him back, if only so we could fight *with* him this time. Would be like having a Nero to my Cid and I could enjoy that.

He thicc af unnf
I always refered to him as the "Power Ranger bad guy". He is bad because he likes being bad. He come out of nowhere, and is presented as an insurmountable wall, when you just fucking beat one of first brood that even death could not defeat, and even the ascian said you were becoming too strong for them. They just destroyed the meaning of everything done up until then. It's really funny to me how they went "Yeah, let endwalker be about what the WoL/Player did up until now, show it was worth something", while they did just the opposite when they introduced Zenos, telling the player "all you did didn't matter, it was of no importance, a guy coming out of nowhere can do better". Sure after that, they tried to explain, but that kind of character has to be hinted to be believable.
And don't come telling me "Yoshi-P said it's because he had 10 lvl more". Using a game mechanic as a plot device is bad storytelling. Even Pokemon didn't dare to touch the lvl thing in their anime because how lame it was.
That said, his send off was good. Too good for the character he was for SB and ShB. But I really hope he will stay dead and they won't try to make him come back by the window, or imply we ended to have some bond with him, because I'm gonna get really pissed.
I do want more unredeemable threats. Like the Godking in Night Angel. His motivations for everything was he got a thrill out of seeing people experience fear or despair. That's all he ever wanted to do and he would complete that objective.
He had a failed assassination on him but the fact it took place at all he had the squads draw straws and whoever got the short one in each squad was beaten to death by the rest. One twin had to murder the other. When he got to a husband/wife group he just looked at the wife and said "The short one is on the left". He loved watching her pick the right one and the wails of the husband knowing his wife sentenced him to die.
This is only one of many things he did and frankly one of the tamer ones.
Because he's just a guy looking for a fight. That's it. There's no bullshit birdgirl and dynamis, no 3D chess, no ulterior motives. It's just him looking to fight me and he's willing to do whatever it takes to get that fight. Sometimes simpler is better.
1. He's cool.
2. He gets straight to the point.
3. He's stupid strong and is literally the only character in FFXIV that can give the WoL a proper challenge.
4. He always brings an interesting weapon to the table.
5. Once you learn about exactly why he's the way he is and such, it makes you like him even more.
6. He 2 vs 1'd Gaius and Estinien on his own without breaking a sweat. He also kicked Elidibus' ass in a random Garlean Centurion's body.
7. Besides G'raha, Alphinaud and Alisaie, Zenos was one of the very few characters that really understood the WoL and while he was a madman. I hope Zenos is reincarnated someday he can truly be the WoL's friend without any of his previous life's baggage.
8. The Zenos memes are glorious.
9. I like his hair.
10. He helped us beat Metetion's ass and proved to even her that he had something to live for, even though he doesn't care for much of anything.
I've seen worse excuses for fanservice.
I guess the twist on ξένος (same pronunciation, though usually transliterated as Xenos), which by itself as a concept tended to have the meaning of hospitality --or a guest owed kindness / the kindness owed to a guest-- but when attached to other words takes on a far more negative connotation per a stranger or the unknown (perhaps unknowable).
In 1.x, there was a significant thematic thread about the powers of being the one on the outside of the flow of world events, of being out of time, the idea being that pretty much just those with the Echo --especially able to tap into the echoes of Hydaelyn-- were/would be able to piece together enough about history to at least delay and mitigate the world's cycle of calamities. Your sort of Xenokratos -- power of the guest/outsider, able to see and interact with far more
Zenos is... the opposite of that take on a stranger/outsider. Power accrued through/due to isolation. Yet, obviously, the connection remains, from one stranger to the other -- even if as only just an inherently transient obsession/twisted-friendship-thingamajig.
Not a fan of Zenos or that archetype of character. I guess this is supposed to be XIV Sephiroth or something (who I also didn't like).
Something I can add to the pile of things I blame Stormblood for.
Not exactly his fans, but one of the best quality from him IMHO is his existence being one of the few glaring reminder that our WoL is not 'invincible'.
While ironically being one of the few people who has absolute confidence in us. The Scions were worried about us in UT. The people in Sharlayan looked up at the sky, worried if our endeavor would work or not.
Zenos? He Kool-Aid Mans in and asks us why the personification of despair isn't dead yet, without a doubt in his mind that we can best it.
Bro just wants to fight, like he destroyed Black Rose solely because if it had been unleashed on the world he wouldn't get to fight the WoL.
also hes hot and i want him to step on me
"Why do you like Zenos yae Galvus."
A question with a million answers but the only thing you need to know is: People love Emet Selch, Lahabrea, Hades, Kratos and any Antihero or Villian there is.. why do you like him? Because you do. Why is it okey that my taste is questioned but every single Thancred or Yshtola Fanboy gets a free pass to drool over his fantasy waifu/husbando!
I thought Zero and Estinien were a thing now....:p Starts running....:p

And Endsinger was just taunting us that we had sent all our friends away and they were our power. I wouldn't be surprised if the WoL was feeling at least a little down at that point. Then our biggest cheerleader busts in and looks down his nose at her and gives us the pep talk of the century. I laughed as she tried to nope right out after that with the two of us hot on her tail.
LOL yeah according to Twitter fanart
I meant more that he praises us as the Warrior of Light and it felt like before when he was still opening up that he gave us crap more often. I don't mind it. It fits his character development. I just miss someone keeping our feet on the ground.
I like his voice actor. I would listen to a Zenos ASMR for sure.
I thought he was a pretty cool villain. I hated that the game just declared, "Nope, he defeated you," and then "Nope, he defeated you again," but that just made it more satisfying when I finally got to kick his perfect teeth in.
This in an old thread but I've been thinking about this a lot as of late.
I think it all boils down to how he sees the player and how he pretty much exposes our true nature.
Part of what keep us motivated to keep going in our adventure is fighting mightier foes, if everything died in one hit everything would become dull and boring, some may even stop caring about the story bits, you would feel so disconnected from everything due to the massive gap between you and everyone else.
This is what Zenos feels, and not only does he see in you a way to escape this feeling, he also doesn't want you to fall in the same boredom. Because in his own twisted way you're his friend, and he wants this to be the climax of life, the greatest battle to ever be. He wants that for the both of you.
Also his line when he sees that you haven't yet killed the Endsinger is soooo good.
All and all is very simple, for me it's the character that mostly reflects the player, and his battle at the edge of the universe will forever be in my mind.
also I like that althought he likes you he doesn't suck your cock 24/7 like half of the cast I mean what
I am in love with Zeno's senpai, The fact he cuts and enjoys battles and combat makes him even more enjoyable. Every time i come across a character like him for example Kenpachi in bleach all I can think is "yes daddy cut me" burn me torture me lets have fun and play together. I love his character the fact he does whatever he wants just because he wants to, and honestly the fact is zeno is by definition what being free is. I want him so bad, the fact is i hate it when they ruin a badass character with a sob story which is fine in some cases like Emet-selch, but sometimes I just want a character like Zenos/kenpachi he simply does it because they want to. ANd believe me if i could find a guy like zenos irl id marry him in a heart beat and let him cut burn me make me scream in pleasure, if it was legal i would love one where we cut one another burn the world down in the heat of passion and pleasure of blood shed.
I wish the end of endwalker could never end, it was such a turn on beating the hell out of one another laughing and the pleasure and passion it I never wanted it to end.
And I want my daddy zenos back and kill y'shtola instend I want him back as a vampire guy returning to torture and beat me and bite me and i bite him. It passion and every living things nature to be like him, and the fact he does so without given a f... makes him the best character in final fantasy xiv what i would give for him to choke me
Why I like him boils down to a few things, keeping in mind he was born into royalty and had an entire army at his subject doing anything he wanted...
1. He realizes all he cares about is fighting strong people, making him basically a Shonen battleslut, which I adore.
2. He tosses aside literally everything because politics and being the leader of an army is boring, he just wants to fight.
3. He calls you out at the end vs Meteion, going like, "I thought you were above than this cringe despair thing?"
People have already mentioned they liked how he was a mirror to the WoL's own adventurous self and they connected emotionally with that, but I liked how straightforward his goals were and how unapologetic he was about pursuing them. I felt like the whole Elpis arc tried waaay too hard to make us be friends with Emet, and bent over backwards to portray him as a tragic, misunderstood victim of circumstance. It left a bad taste in my mouth, and Zenos' selfish pursuit of his own wants to the detriment of everyone around him was an incredibly refreshing contrast to that. It's also a much more grounded motivation- even if you don't like or respect Zenos, you can still understand him in a visceral, instinctive way that doesn't require twenty hours of exposition.
