Downvotes will be used to drown out or silence comments that they "disagree with", which then leads to "brigading". Reddit has downvotes, when enough people use it the person is then muted whilst others dogpile on them..it is ripe for abuse and misuse so..no.

I feel bad enough getting ratio'd, I don't need to also have a negative number on all my posts.

It's not just that its full of trolls. The people on this forum can't take their opinions being challenged, and instead of debate they result to insulting their opponents and calling them "Trolls". Everyone on this forum would be reported for being a troll for making a post someone disagreed with, and the moderators would bang their heads against walls going through this literal overwhelming tsunami of spiteful reports. Actual trolls would be indistinguishable from "This person made me feel bad because they don't agree with me" style of reports.

Its obviously just a way to express that you agree with / Like a post....but people kind of like to use it as fuel and pretend it means they are right about something, even if they are verifiably wrong, and will weaponize it against you that "I have the more popular opinion, therefor you are wrong" just because there are X number of people that get upvotes.
Which, is kind of bad.

Downvotes can have the same effect, where if any number of people dislike a post, peoples brains will think "GASP, they must be wrong and the other person is right."
Plus anybody could press the button, and some might do so just to troll or to spite a person, and if people take the Upvote & Downvote buttons seriously, it can be damaging in some ways.
Especially if the Devs take the upvotes & downvotes as metrics.

On another forum I used to spend time on it was common for people to thumbs up every post just to keep track of where they left off reading the thread. It was absolutely silly.

The downvotes is partly why I dislike Reddit because it just allows people to trample out valid criticism or "controversial" opinions.

We don't need downvotes. People WANT to collect downvotes. We NEED actual moderation. We need them to actually have a presence and not just randomly nuke one thread but now the ones that really need it.
