Xenogears- yeah not a FF but by square and this has story than any RPG should strive to achieve. Also innovative battle systems.
XII- I loved the large open area and was totally into the government suspense stuff. And I got to play an English version of the international. So jobs, turbo mode, hard mode, 100 floor challenge etc = awesome
VII- My first final fantasy. A lot of people hate it but I loved the fact that every character had to handle some problem and it showed them going through it. Also Having a main character and villain not know who they were until certain points was a great parallel. Cloud having PTSD thinking his was Zack, and Sephiroth, just not knowing until he found out on his own.
VI- The first truly great story RPG of the final fantasies. The gameplay was great and for its time, the characters we so appealing even though they were in bit format. I felt with them.
Tactics- I love tactics games and a FF spin made this even better. The idea of playing a character that worked in the background and NEVER got full recognition for he work (his old best friend got all the glory) was a truly different experience, also going from castles and knight fights to demons and hellions by the end of the game.
XIII- Again because of characters. Every character had sides they would not show to people but because of the situations they were flung into, you were able to see their real feelings and emotions. Such as Vanille crying in her sleep, the strong dad Sazh about to kill himself over his son, the man who calls himself hero all the time eventually breaks down, the strong willed soldier lightning admitting she has been wrong. And a whole world that lives in false belief.
X- I loved the battle system and the end really made this game worth playing though, such twists. And as the first second gen entry of playstation it was revolutionary.
IV- A story with good characters, and the DS release was actually balanced well. I'll always love the characters, they gave so much and tried so hard.
V- True success at the job system!
IX- I have mixed feelings. Loved the ability system and Freya, but some aspects I could just not get into.
VIII- I loved the gameplay except for drawing magic. The story didn't strike a chord with me personally but I enjoyed it.
Final Fantasy 3 (6 now) and 7.
1: FF9
2: FF6
3: FF5
4: FF10
5: FF11 ( yes 11. I have never devoted as much time to a game like I did to this one, has to be in my top 5 just to justify the years I spent on it >.<)
In order from most to least enjoyed.

14 is still up in the air for me.
III for the sheer amount of jobs it had and how it was pretty much like FFXI (now that i think about it) in an rpg because you had 4 people to control and you choose all their jobs ^^.
IV for the storyline. Some of our most epic designs for jobs come from this game ex) Kain Highwind for Dragoon, Cecil for Dark knight and Paladin. I love how a genuine catharsis would change the characters, like the inability to do white magic or the old guy forgetting his spells. These elements were great in my opinion.
Xi for bring that "final fantasy feeling" to an mmo, plus I have more log time in that game than in the rpgs
FFI for bring the original six jobs we all love so much and for being a bad ass first game when your replay it. I actually hated the storyline of FFII which bummed me this game is based after it. SO i dont agree with people who group FFI and II together just because they were re-released that way.
FFX-2 for bring chica love and nothing else that game was actually terrible but the jobs would of been so cool in other games :/ that blue mage gun job, SONGTRESS, you know you want it.
Going to have to go with IX right now, mainly because it happens to be the FF I'm playing through now... But the thing that I like about IX is that it 'feels' like how Final Fantasy should, to me at least... Other than that I'd have to say top 5 are:
1. IX
2. XI
3. X
4. VI
5. XIII
My top 5 FF are;
1 FF IV. I just love the cast in this game Cecil is awesome I love PLD's
2. FF IX Love Zidane and Vivi's story a lot and all the chi-bi char models and Dagger was hot. :)
3. FF VII. Loved the game had great mini games and everything else( also the only FF i ever quit playing during my first play thru cause you know who died lol)
4. FF XIII I really loved light and Sazh and Vanile in this game they had good back story and the battle system is my fav out of all the other FF. I also liked how they wasn't even living on a real planet to start with. (most of the cast i should say)
5. FF VI. Had to go with 6 for the sole reason Kefka is my fav boss out of the whole FF series cause he actually took over the world and he was funny/insane like the joker so it was always fun to see him on the screen.
Who didn't get a kick out of the cutscenes in X where the camera always seemed to pan down to Lulu's cleavage?!
My favorites in order:
FFVI: There was just so much to do in this game, a great battle system, and I loved the characters. The music is still some of my fave tracks of any FF game, and the central villain is just so despicably evil you just have to love him. Everything in this game just feels right. Easily my choice for best game of the FF series.
FFIX: A more light hearted FF game than the previous 2, but I really like the ability system and was nice to go back to traditional assigned classes for characters after the previous 2 games. I also absolutely love Vivi in this game, and could really feel for him in the first and second discs.
FFTactics: It still surprises to this day how many friends I have that did not like this game just because it was a SRPG as opposed to the traditional FF RPG. The story is fantastic, loved the job system, and it had some of the best music not done by Nobuo that I can think of from any FF game. Its a shame the next 2 games that bear the FFtactics name are no where as serious as this one (although still fun to play) =(.
FFXII: One of those games you either hated or loved based on the battle system alone. I personally really liked the battle system and thought the characters (vaan excluded) are really well done. Lots of side hunts to go on, (we NEED these in XIV!) story for me was pretty good, and the voice acting I felt was mostly done very well, excluding Fran which was abysmal lol.
FFVII: While I feel it is a bit overhyped (it personally hasn't aged well imo) I still feel its a great game that brings back very fond memories. Great cast of characters, loved the materia system, and the slew of mini games that you could do. The introduction of really awesome CG clips (for its time) also really pushed the epicness of the game.
Top Favorite Final Fantasy games:
FF (The original of course!)
FFVIII
FFIX
FFXI
FFX
FFCC
- FF:6 - Might be the best game ever made by Square/SE
- FF:11 - Hit everything almost perfectly... except the SMN job :p
- FF:12 - International Zodiac - A true work of art and it would be my all time favorite if Bash was the main char and the story was streamlined a bit. Ivalice is a rich and amazing world.
- FF:Tactics - War of the Lions - Near-perfect Job system, amazing story writing and characters. Ivalice Again!
- FF:9 - Beautiful throwback, I'd love to see another FF game in this style.
- FF:1 (original and remakes) - I've played this through more times than any other FF game. It still holds up.
- FF:4 - Might have the best storyline of any FF game, but the gameplay drags in parts.
- FF:8 - Fantastic Summons, epic ending, Interesting world and Villians.. oh and Triple Triad!
- FF:3 (DS remake) - Cute story, good job system, some neat surprises in the game.
- FF:X-2 - Surprisingly fun game, great battle system and lots to do and explore, plot wasn't bad either.
- FF:7 - Materia System was good, Had some impactful moments and a good villain, but storyline was a convoluted mess - Largely over-rated IMO.
- FF:5 - Another over-rated game.. Job system was nifty, but story and characters were mundane.
- FF:10 - The first FF game to kill exploration. The characters were weak, the story was imaginative, but not well executed. Battle system was boring.
- FF:13 - This should have never been a flagship FF game. It should have been the beginning of a spin-off series called "Final Fantasy - Dramatic Action" or something like that. The first 40 hours of the game are no less that a total drudgery and the main villain and plot are both terrible.
- FF:2 - I beat this game and recall nothing of it. Worse than a bad Final Fantasy, this game is 100% forgettable.
1. FF11
2. FF6
3. FF7
4. FFT
5. FF9
Don't care much for the rest of the series tbh. As far as storyline, world, etc. goes FFXI was the crown jewel of the series imo.
1) FFIX: For me this is FF in its most classic Form, awesome leveling system, lots of sidequests and secret things to find, great story.
2)FFX: Incredible way of combining futuristic elements with classic FF settings like hidden castles and dungeons etc. One of the best FF stories in my opinion, even better than IX, amazing combat system (You could use all characters! in a single fight)
3) XIII: FF story could not have been portrayed perfectly without the technology we have now, with impressive cut scenes and facial expressions, Incredible combat system, though of course, having full access to it only close to the end of the game is a downside, lots of things to do once the game opened up and you were through with the amazing story.
4) IV: Kain and Cecil are some of the best characters for me. a lot of different places to travel, basic FF combat system which is a plus.
5)VI: Amazing story, one of the best, along with X, top notch battle system
6)VII and VIII, though at the end of the list, these are still amazing FF's, but from my top FF's, you might realize that I prefer clearly defined jobs in my characters.
7)X-2, I consider this FF a great addition to the story, everyone wanted more after completing FFX, I compare this to Zelda Majoras Mask, Not so great in the story telling, but the sheer scope of side activities, multiple percentage of completion for the ending, Great job system make it a fine example for a FF
Never was able to play XII, I feel its a lost for me, because probably never will. The idea that anyone can do anything like VIII doesnt entice me that much, I'd play it for the story of course and for the wonderful locations that I have seen while watching my friend play through it, which he put close to two hundred hours into that game.
Ah yes, XI. for me XI like IX has all the FF elements the game should have. clearly defined jobs, excellent story through out the expansions, tons of quests, great tactical combat system, to certain extent, chocobos, airships, ultimate weapons, it has all.
I really freakin' wish the International version was International for FFXII :(
- FFVII, FFVI, FFII
- FFIX
- FFVIII, FFV, FFIV
- FFX, FFXII
