Seriously, either revert the changes in February with the Authentication system for steam users, or allow Steam users to use the Windows/Retail Client. I would willingly purchase a new license, if the option to transfer my character from Steam to Windows/Retail existed.
This is still ongoing...
for me this can only be resolved by completely re-installing the game and it happens a couple times every week for me now. Why cant we migrate away from steam yet?

For what it's worth, most people seem to say that re-installing doesn't seem to affect the issue. It might just be that the problem is resolved by the time you get around to logging in again after re-installing. I would advise against it, based on what others are saying. I've certainly not needed to re-install myself, and it's happened twice now.
So frustrating not being able to log in. :( Why doesn't SE post a status somewhere? It's as if they're not acknowledging it.
This has happened once before and I found that re installing was a waste of time. If only I can find my post from time first time this happened, I know how to get around this, I think it has something to do with the cog at the top right of the log in. You don't need to do anything, but go into that and back out and I THINK it should get around it, may take a few times. That's what I think I did last time....
Steams launcher is just down, no need to do anything other than wait.

Is there really no way at all to just buy the complete edition (not steam) and still keep your account? This thing is driving me crazy, it happened before and is not coming up again, this is really terrible if you have static times to meet and stuff - i do not care about paying another license at all if i can somehow keep the char and get rid off steam
I don't play through Steam, but I have been unable to log in since last Monday. I've been working trying to fix it hours a day. I can play every other game I have downloaded fine except FF.
No sadly not because you can only have one Windows licence on your service account. Steam or non-Steam, not both. Any new licence would have to be on a different service account that doesn't already have a Windows licence, which means new subscription and new characters.
Not possible, if you go to mogstation and click to add more service account, the Windows version have a blur on it, and you can only add MAC or PS4/5 versions.
Whats funny too is that when I submitted a ticket to square, they responded back to me saying this isn't their issue and to contact steam....
And Steam says they can't help, contact SE.
It is SE's issue, because they forced the integration on us in the first place.
Love the extra security. No one can get into my account now, not even me. Love paying a monthly sub for a game not owned by Steam, but I still can't play whenever I want just because Steam's not working.

I'm less than a month into the game and this has already happened 3 times to me. I don't like those metrics. I wish I had researched in advance not to buy on Steam, but then why should I need to?

Square-Enix says to contact steam because it's a steam problem (which to be fair it is).
Steam says to contact Square-Enix because it's a Square-Enix problem.
So how do we get either organization to actually care that a non-insignificant portion of their player base just... Straight up can't access the game at not-uncommon rate? Yanno aside from cancelling subscriptions en masse because we all know none of us will (nor should) do that.

Same problem here. Played today before the error about 4 hours ago with no obstacles.
So how do we actually report it as a problem? Couldn't find a way to do it on Steam... It's been over an hour and if we can't report the problem, how will they fix it? lol
Same issue on my husband's computer for the last hour or two. Yay. I tried uninstalling the game and deleted every FFXIV file on his PC but even trying a clean install gives me a Steam connection popup error, then a technical issue warning when we attempt to launch it for the first time.
So now we'll have to go through the hours-long full reinstall process whenever this gets fixed. And husband won't be pleased when he realizes all his settings are gone since he spent yesterday evening redoing his hotbars and I'm sure forgot to make a backup since he exited the game once he was done... I'd much prefer it if we'd bought the Windows version.
Wherever the problem lies, the issue is unfortunately probably up to Square Enix to resolve. We're unable to submit a support request for the game via Steam, as following their support wizard to try just results in a page saying that they can't help with third party games. If the issue is with Steam Authentication, there's likely no way for us as users to let Steam know what's going on.
The onus, therefore, is on us to let Square Enix know what's going on (we're doing what we can right now, by making these posts in these forum threads), and then Square Enix to liaise with Steam to resolve whatever the underlying issue is. Since it's a Sunday, I'm not sure that there's going to be anyone from Technical Support in either company available to hit their respective servers with a hammer. So, unless this issue is one that simply self-resolves after a period of time, we probably won't be getting a solution today.
However, I would encourage people to make this issue known via contacting Square Enix support directly. Maybe if enough people bring it up, they can make it a more prominent issue to address.
