Not needed at all. Don't really care
In all seriousness I don't see why they would change how the portraits work already, the photo has to show your face to be accepted. And I don't to much care for the "think of the kids" argument as thats the parents job not mine. If Miqo butt in 2Bs bottoms is a no no for you you're playing the wrong game
The best part about this feature is that it's optional. I think a decent amount of people seem to forget that people like different stuff. A cool feature for one person is obnoxious for another. I like the plates and I'd be ok with them being expanded further, provided that any system that uses them is also optional.
Whether you like them or not, it seems like there are already plans to add them to more things, though not commendations specifically. From the patch notes:Makes it sound a lot like they'll appear at the start of things like dungeons at some point in the future, but are only in PvP right now.Quote:
Such portraits are used to introduce players at the start of various duties. As of Patch 6.1, they are used to introduce combatants at the beginning of Crystalline Conflict PvP matches.
Sounds like a fun idea at face value, and I do wish they would adjust the commendation system so that you can still vote for players even after they've left the dungeon. However...
I'm not sure I like the idea of Adventurer Plate design or character portraits influencing commendations, either positively or negatively. Granted, players can already commend for pretty arbitrary things like character name or appearance, but I feel like this would just exacerbate that and bring it to the forefront. It could even tacitly suggest that voting for "best Adventurer Plate" is actually the intended purpose of comms.
I think the commendation idea is pretty cool.
Unfortunately it is already that way. By design I might add. Since the game refuses to measure performance of players at the end of the dungeon commendations go to either people who were pleasant and chill, glamours, or someone who hard carried so much it was impossible to ignore.
Also, since commendations don’t serve a huge purpose I think the developers intend them to be for whatever they want the users to interpret as commendable, and if a player put the extra work into making a real cool plate then maybe that is the drop that tips the scale.
So I don’t necessarily view that possibility as an issue and rather as a fact of life. Commendations can happen for anything.
I agree it should keep growing but don't think many people would like that idea for duties, I personally wouldn't mind it but seems like it would be intrusive for others XD.
I guess it could be?
However, I am of the impression that adventurer plates are a way for you to introduce yourself to others in a very public fashion. The equivalent of a business card. Further more unless set to private you can right click on the individual and inspect it. So it would stand to reason this is something players would want others seeing. After all you don't exactly hide your business cards, instead the goal is to distribute them.
So I am unsure what privacy concerns someone that designed an adventurer plate and has it set to public would have if its shown.
I mean, nice idea on paper but by the time those things even load on your screen, chances are the people you wanted to comm already left
Crude paint drawing, but here is the gist of it, taken from the PVP page that already pops up.

This is actually one of the better ideas I’ve read on the OF. Great job OP.
I vastly prefer the current system. Small, unintrusive, there when you want it. Not in your face.
It’s definitely down to personal preference then :) I like to look at portraits & see peoples creativity with it.. it kinda adds more personality to their characters. But if that’s not your thing I understand! We will just agree to disagree.
Only downside I can think of is there’ll always be those people who take over the top sexual photos
So it would kind of be like Overwatch where at the end of the dungeon/raid/whatever the Portrait would pop up and you click it to give them a Comm?
I actually like that, of course it would be optional but I wouldn't mind that.
This is a really bad idea... commendations should be about competence and helpfulness in the duty, not a beauty contest of who's looking the cutest / funniest in their picture.
If it's an optional toggle in the settings? Sure, why not; options never hurt anyone. Those who like it and want to see it can toggle it on, those who don't can continue as normal.
Hard no if it's something forced, though. I don't feel like seeing "uguu kawaii catgirl" #2980774987 who thinks they took a 'unique' picture for their plate every single time a duty ends and I'm just trying to comm whoever contributed best.
Apart from not wanting to look at tons of crotch pictures during roulettes or farming or so either, I would be against waiting for a pop-up to fully load, click on buttons, close it again and then get out of the dungeon. Would be especially strange if people for whom it loads faster or who decide faster would already start leaving... Also I agree with the point, that visually tying commendations to another feature (= the plates) would make people base their decision based on this feature. Yes, people give coms for the best puns, for glam, for "I didn't die, so I guess the healer did good" or "the only other person who hasn't left the duty yet". That's not really the point of coms. But that doesn't mean we have to make this even worse or even give the implication that this is the point of coms or whatever. Not every person is creative. Not every person is interested in plates. Not every person likes to set it on public when they prefer it to stay private. Not every person set one up.
Make it an optional feature? Sure, go ahead, you can turn it on, I can turn it off, we both are fine.
Make it mandatory? Lolnope, because of what I just said.
Also, I know it's hard, it's the internet, but maybe it would help the discussion if "doesn't want to see revealing pictures" wouldn't be understood as "okay let's just have blank faces in boxes", or "(insert any sort of criticism)" not as "you naysayers just hate fun". There is space inbetween these takes. Just a suggestion. ;)
The major problem with OP's idea is that the amount of time to provide a commendation at this point is fairly small. I've been finding that multiple party members are gone by the time I get the chance to provide a commendation. Looking at plates with blanks for missing members of the party (perhaps all of them except yourself) would be a waste. It's hard enough to catch party members before they exit an instance as it is.
I like the idea. Sometimes in content with more people like the 24 man raid, I remember the character more than the name which means that I am a bit confused which name I should give my com. For example I got rezzed and saved quite a few times by a certain healer and I knew that he was a male elezen but I dont remember his character name..so there is a chance that I give it to the wrong healer.
With this, it might at least help.
At the same time I am not 100% sure if it should show customized plates...seeing how some are already using them for quite "interesting" shots.
I say a good compromise would be: Make this screen appear when you click Commendations. Don't make it automatically come up if you just exit a instance. If someone exits a dungeon without commending, they don't want to commend.
Yes I disagree with people being trashy about it. However this probably has a fix. There is a built in protection already as you have to have the characters gaze showing. Maybe it could be expanded so that the breast/butt region cant be occupying more than 25% of the portrait space or some other method of portrait zone control.
After that making an explicit TOS amendment clarifying it is reportable and the community would have to do their part.
I am sure we can make it go away. We will always find reasons not to do things however when care and thought is put in to them we can enjoy new features instead of no longer innovating. If you can opt out of the commendation system and provide an option to skip a screen that would take 1 second it gives an out to players who don't want to enjoy it. But overall I think that would be the minority of players and none of the "What if" scenarios given here really give me pause that this would be a change for the better yet.
I would only be for this if the commendation portrait system was limited to a select few preset poses; decorate all you want with your gear and stickers, but I agree I don't want to finish a dungeon and be blasted by some idiot's attempt at trolling me.
Alternatively just use our headshots like we have here on the forum.
Actually I'd rather not pictures at all, but just a list of names post dungeon to commend since the good guys typically leave fast.
The only way this would be widely accepted, since some people still like giving out commendations where applicable(let's face it, there are always duties where people under perform so badly you just leave without giving out a commendation), is to have the toggle that was suggested where you either opt in to have the plates show, or keep it as is. If it's forced to see the adventure plates, then there will be a lot more complaint threads about that when what we have works perfectly fine.
I would be fine if the plates showed up at the start of a duty, and automatically got put away once the gate drops. That would be a better "introduction"(as stated as a reason for wanting the commendation window changed to include the plates) than changing the current commendation method.
I support this idea!
There's a population within the game that want to be able to turn off other peoples glamour on their side. People being averse to a system like this is not surprising.
Agreed. Downplaying that concern is honestly a much larger concern for me.
Over reactions to criticisms aside, surely you understand the difference between chancing upon some rando in town in a bikini and being able to just adjust your camera or move VS having a full on downblouse/upskirt blasted across your screen that won't go away until you manually click it away.
The fact that this is even a possibility makes the idea dead on arrival without restraints.
I think its a neat Idea, let people express themselves.
