Macos Monterey 12.3 - Python removed, FFIXV will not run

A bug report about this has been moved to "Confirmed/Planning to Address", so at least they're aware of it and will hopefully have a fix soon.

That said, the complete lack of communication and that they're still selling the mac version (with a warning M1 isn't supported but this also affects Intel macs afaik and no warning about 12.3) is very disappointing and worrisome. The teams communication, attention to detail and consideration for the player experience is something they are known for. It feels like that's changed recently on a few different levels, including this issue.

I wonder if they're readying to drop support entirely for Macs. M1s aren't exactly cutting edge at this point and while ffxiv worked well on them (till this patch!), there's still no official support or word on any of this since December.

SE could likely easily get away with it in the USA, but as it's a purchased license, quite a few countries in the world have trade laws that would be a can of worms for this. EULA statements can't override the laws of many countries.

To drop support they would need to make the announcement today that 7.0 would not be supported, but then provide full support for Endwalker until then.

That does make sense Shibi, and relieves some of the worry, thank you!

Still, it seems this weekly reset didn't include a fix and still not a word from Squeenix. Losing faith in them a bit.

If they found out about this issue on short notice, it wouldn't be as bad, but apparently they knew this would be a problem at least as early as 4th Qtr 2021 since they said it would be fixed 12/21 and still nothing but silence.

So....
Are we still waiting for a fix? And nobody is working on it or at least have an estimated time of recovery?

Crossover (what the mac version runs on - it's just the windows version in a wine wrapper) has an updated version ready to go but SE is dragging their feet on allowing them to release it, has been since December IIRC.

There is xivmac.com that does support 12.3 and will get you better support to boot.

I see this effect too, on lit windows as seen from outside, and also streetlights, such as those in Elpis; a random fast flickering between completely on and off of the radiant lit state. Even if it settles for a moment, can trigger it again by moving camera

Been hunting for settings which may have some affect on it ...

Turning off Glare and unchecking "Disable rendering of objects when not visible. (Occlusion Culling)" seems to have solved the flickering mostly for me. It was terrible in Azys La and the Moogle area not the window and streetlights as much for me, so it may be a different issue but it's worth a shot.

Oh wow, I thought something gone wrong with my app, redownloaded and it does the same. Came here and see everyone is having the same issue. I have a MacBook Pro M1 Pro here.

I had a 2020 13in M1 MacBook Pro and it ran XIV better than my 2018 15' Intel MBP AND keep in mind, it was running it through Rosetta. I have a 2021 16 inch M1-Pro MBP now and it runs incredibly. Never had any issues until 12.3. Im hoping they dont drop Mac support

It's an absolute disgrace the way a multibillion company such as Square Enix mishandles their products over and over again on various platforms.

This is not specific to Final Fantasy XIV on Mac, but it's of course it's even worse here as there are just lies and empty promises being published over and over, I for one deeply regret the amount of money I pored into the Mac "port" of this game considering it's the laziest "port" I've ever seen.
I certainly hope the reason they been neglecting the mac version for so long is because they actually do a proper build this time around, but at the same page it's of course extremely unlikely.

Instead the community effort XiVOnMac surfaced and within a few months surpassed the official port both in terms of functionality and performance (of course the latter is most likely due to using more recent versions of dependent libraries, but my point is it shouldn't even have to be a community effort to start with to support a currently active title! it's nothing but completely inexcusable business behaviour on Square Enix behalf)

Meanwhile you have companies such as Blizzards, who not only kept a mac version up to date but also provided native builds for all supported mac architectures at all times, that implemented native backends for the most current graphic api used at all times- and doesn't charge a dime extra for it.

I have a 2020 Intel iMac, how does FFXIV run on Bootcamp? I know some games are a problem due to scaling issues on the 5k monitor.

Was wondering why FFXIV would not run earlier this week. After rebooting my iMac twice hoping that this would fix the issue I figured it might be something more and came and low and behold looks like it is impacting many in the Mac community that are running the latest version of the Mac OS.

I wish Square Enix would just write a true Mac version instead of these wrappers. It has caused problems in the past and here we are again. It would be nice and appropriate, I feel, if Square Enix would suspend billing the monthly fee for those with the Mac license until this is fixed since we can't even play the game now.

For the time being, I am using "XIV on Mac" google it. It works really well!

A bit iffy in terms of drivers. Lots of DX11 errors are possible. Sometimes solvable updating to the lastest AMD drivers, sometimes not.

It's better running it on OS X if you can.

XIVonMac is the best solution for now, despite it being against TOS (like GShade is), it does seem to work well.

I just hope they fix this eventually.

Either way, people need to redownload the launcher after (if) they fixed it. Launcher rigtht now will just fail on its own unable to get updates.

Even using third party addons to actually launch the game, then xbox one gamepad (Bluetooth) does not work properly (in macOS or other games works as intended)

I think most of us would get some satisfaction if SE would give us an update on their progress on updating the client, especially since its three months late.

The hilarious thing about company proprietary softwares (Codeweavers for this one contracted to SE) are always way slower than anything. It is unbelieveable how fast the community open source project can fix things in matters of days. I don't get how company get by this, better off just fund open source communities to do the work and they do it better on top!

When the 64 bit thing happened I posted on these forums that the Mac OS client would need to be updated or it would not run - that was for Shadowbringers. Needless to say when Shadowbringers dropped it would not run on the then current MacOS build and it took them months to sort it. I expect nothing more and salute those who show it can be solved by simply paying attention and having knowledge of the OS.

The fact that the XIVMac team had the update ready and working for Mac users shows that while it might not have been easy (I have no idea what went into it tbh) but that it is possible to have a fully working update ready for 6.1.

Perhaps Sqeenix should hire them / pay them for the code since that team clearly cares and are amazing at taking care of the Mac customers.

Im sorry if more people have talked about this, this morning.
I expect literally everyone has had a similar issue at some point but currently my Launcher isn't even loading after the update.

Emailing Support multiple times has only resulted in receiving the same copy pasted email from the troubleshooting page.
And since I'm currently on an older mac and cannot update my OS from Catalina, I'm unable to use FFXIV on Mac.

I have already done what I could including reinstalling the launcher, removing the wine preloader, etc etc etc. If anyone has ANY advice right now it would be very much appreciated.

Hmm, according to the System Requirements page Catalina should be supported. Does your Mac meet the other system requirements?

Also, on the XIVMac discord, under the support-xivonmac section there's a link to a version that you can compile that may work "but it most likely won't". If you know how to compile that, it may be worth a shot? They're talking about it as I write this, so hopefully there will be a solution soon.

According to the requirements listed, my computer should be able to run ffxiv.
And I did manage to get the XOM build for catalina to log me in.

However, either because 1 its an old build obviously not meant to work with 6.1
OR as support stated my graphics card isn't compatible [even though it meets requirements] the game's unfortunately semi-unstable and uh kinda hard to look at?
I did what i could with the settings but, unfortunately rn I don't know what else i could possibly fix.

What really bothers me is that they're not even communicating about this at all, oh, and still selling it and taking the monthly fees! They've had plenty of notice from Apple about the changes, Codeweavers apparently has a working version... what is going on from Sqeenix's end?

I'm not a lawyer, but if they aren't even supporting the limited range of Macs listed on their system requirements is that not a breach of some law?

I've seen this lack of communication and care before in other gaming companies and thought the FFXIV team was different but I am all out of copium at this point.

It's a kludge - but it doesn't install a default python per se, and it got FFXIV running again for me. (Intel Macbook Pro).

This still doesn't work on m1 macs with montenery :(

I have an M1 Pro on 12.3, and this does work. Although, I like the XOM loader better.

You can throw that terminal command into and AppleScript wrapper using Script Editor. You can then put it on your dock and launch it like an application. Use the code below in Script Editor and save as an application, and place the saved file on your dock. You will get a pop-up on launching to permission it in Security Settings.

It just auto-updated on my Mac - but I already had the "python bandage" in place. After the update, I deleted the bandage, and it still worked.

Maybe this will help the M1 users?

How would I go about getting this installed if I haven't done the python bandage?

I can't seem to find that Mac launcher update info. Is there a link to where it is talked about? Currently it's not working with 12.3 on Mac for me still. And it shows my launcher is only 1.0.5
