I'm VERY excited about this! It's a dream come true for me!
Just yesterday I was taking this screen and wondering if plants would ever stop looking so painful

And then, some hours later...

THANK YOU, YOSHIDAAAAAA!
I'd love it if they could leave faces as an easy basic 'preset' option, but then allow us to use smaller features (lips, eyebrows, eye shapes, tattoos, markings etc.) from all faces.
I really like the eyes on some faces but then the noses and mouths are awful, and vice versa.
They didn't say anything about customization. With that there is more than just graphic limitations to deal with. I do want it, but don't think a graphic update automatically means more options.
I don't want the sweaty look, the middle is fine. Maybe a sweat slider? :D
Thank goodness for the graphical update.
Hopes that it will come in tandem with an expanded character creator.
I mean, the update is long overdue, but it doesn't take out facts like races with just 4 options of faces, or Au Ra horns locked into face models.
Maybe... Every example had a rich shine on the hair. Dunno if it was just the lightning used though.
I'm kind of hyped for this, because it probably mean that finally our characters can look good under dim light.
Like, right now... I'd add a faint red lip color to my viera so he won't look just like dead-pale, and it looks good on regular lightning, but as soon as I wander into a tunnel or somewhere without a direct light source, his lips become fully darkened and with ugly eyebags too.
And here I was hoping for an upgrade to HD 2D graphics ^_^. Sprites all the way :D
I don't get to watch any of the streams, when is this supposed to happen?
They look nice, but forgive me but isn't this just different lighting and shadows? The Models still look pretty basic.
That is all that I want to see. I like my characters as they are and I don't want their appearances to change.
If they tried to upgrade the actual appearances, I would be concerned that they might move in the direction of the trailer animation, which I think makes most of the cast look less appealing than their in-game models.
I'm more interested in the improved animations they mentioned.
I really hope they manage to make the facial expression changes look more natural, and for the slim chance that they rid Hrothgar of the shit-in-my-pants stance.
They look alright. It's been a long time coming, I'd have to see more pictures though - with different lighting. The eyes in particular look pretty good.
Yeah I know, Both me and my son cringed when we saw it and were glad to hear it was not gonna happen. However you know as soon as Graphic Update 1 goes up people will be digging up that pic demanding "Graphic Update 2: Electric Boogaloo". Some hair sheen would be nice.
We'll see what they end up settling on but I wouldn't mind a little bit of texture in the skin, but not whatever was going on in that image. Unless it was a toggle or facial feature you can add or remove, that'd be fine, great even.
The hair is already a big improvement in these early drafts so I look forward to seeing the end result.
Nice. Finally my rig can flex its muscles. Many players around me still bottlenecks it though.
The game really needs an engine update and I welcome the changes. Lighting, shadows and anti-aliasing are all noticeably terrible in this game in comparison to so many other MMOs it should actually be considered quite embarrassing. I dislike the current WoW game design direction but Blizzard always did a good job of adding modern rendering techniques to the game client with Shadowlands having modern ray traced shadows that require an RTX or RDNA2 (AMD) graphics cards. I'm playing this game on a PS5 and it's actually a pretty sub-par experience in my opinion because it looks bad and unlike an equivalently specced PC, doesn't even run as well at it should if it's going to look a old as it does at times.
I must be the only one not excited about this change. I don't want my miqote to have that toy doll look that Yshtola has in the EW intro cinematic and that's the direction I see this going...
I like the preview of the new character models so far. Better lighting and sharper textures etc. They could also increase the polygon count, IMHO. :)
Cheers
If you look at the Midlander's ears in the frontal comparison shot you'll notice they've actually got a more defined shape, so I think polygon count will go up

I cannot see, that they have increased the polygon count.
Cheers
Yes, I think or at least hope they are starting with lighting and shaders but they HAVE, absoutely HAVE to touch the models and polygon count if this is to be a serious graphics update. I really hope they do, if they are going to take on a job as big as improving graphics they may as well do it right you know?
Am I the only one who thinks the first picture of Derplander upgraded (where he's facing forward) looks like a downgrade? The eyes feel a bit too far apart. The whole face looks better before.
Didn't see hroth but wondering if we might get some nice sort of fur shader... That could be pretty neat (which could also be applied to other fur objects, better fur on armors could be quite neat).
Another item I'd love if they could try to address during these multiple phases of upgrades is object view distance - there are a few really grand reaching views but they're a bit offset in 'grand'ness because there are a bunch of objects either missing or highly duplicated (in order to preserve memory of course, there is a reasons for it).
Sorry but this so called update is a sick joke if that on screens is all what they have to offer. All i see is that they added a Darker Background an put some dirt on all of the character Faces. Yea the hair looks a bit darker, but thats thanks to the background and overall darker lightning of the images on the right side. The biggest joke is the miquote face, there is like no change at all if you would put both pictures on the same brightness level.
Ok they look a bit sharper which is nice but that change is also not that big if you are using 4k resolution
At least for us PC players there is already an option available since years that has just a minimal performance impact (depends on the settings) and looks way better that what they are trying to achieve even with the worst preset. If they really want to know how this game could like (since over 5 years) they should take a closer look at one of the dozens awesome reshade presets for this game and add the necessary settings and filters.

just a quick few examples that i had still on my HD of what is already possible with just a little effort. This game can really look amazing with the right filters, at least for PC users.
New Lala model looks great

That was my original joke, thank you.
Those honestly look awful to me. The contrast is far too harsh and the colours are jarring.
The original shot of the three kids is a bit dark (though they're in a dark indoor area so not exactly strange) but the altered one looks unnatural. The daylit shot of Y'shtola and Urianger looks absolutely fine to begin with and horrible after.
The basic screenshots could do with a tiny increase of contrast and colour intensity, but not that extent.
