I'm half sure EW launch will be a disaster. Though maybe not as bad as raubahn savage. As for what we'll get in that case, we get to wait and most likely an apology from yoshi-p. That's all.

Playing a game nowadays, MMO or not, in early access/launch day is like being a tester. You will likely face-tank the game at its worst due to unpredictable bugs and stuffs. For MMO, it will likely to have super long queue (think of New World at launch), which is the reason why they often open a lot of servers at launch to shoulder the load, then reduce the number as population diminishes.
So if you have trouble playing at launch, just give it a week and do something else. Avoiding visiting reddit and youtube to prevent spoiling yourself.
I was only around for Stormblood and Shadowbringers early access, having joined up a month or two into 3.0.
The first was a disaster, though barely playable - I was lucky enough to get through Raubahn Extreme after only 30 minutes or so.
The second was - almost like a normal day in Eorzea, except for a login queue of around 1000.
first day is gonna be a mess no doubt , i can see a quest block for sure (always happens lol) , disconnects and queues but thats expected
In Stormblood the bottle neck that happened with Raubahn instance duty was due to the fact of poor planning. They had placed that instance/encounter in the very first new zone (Fringes). It easily capped out right away and the queue to get in was massive. Players were left with little else to do to advance the story and get into Rhalgrs Reach. So we ran around Fringes doing Fates to gain exp.
Since then SE learned a lesson and with Shadowbringer's launch it was so much smoother. We can hope this problem doesn't ever reoccur and things flows smoothly with EW EA. I hope they tested with EW how the game flows on a mass scale. If things happens it will be some other thing that got overlooked.
I expect the normal DDos attacks, much larger login queues and bugs in areas they'll need to patch. It's part of launches. I expect lots of lag in over crowded zones. I expect people to complain on the Lodestone when their internet or PC can't handle the loads and point fingers or when DDos attackers start their antics. Yes your new EW pony mount you get with EA will take time to arrive in moogle mail. I think best to just expect the worst and hope for the best. The new expansion isn't going anywhere.
The server issues of late have been due to NTT being... not good at their job lately, not DDOS attacks. But I would be prepared possibly for a DDOS during early access or the first week at some point.
Oh noes, you might have to wait 2 minutes instead of 30 seconds to play. Twelve forefend!
Never expect a smooth launch of an expansion.
One would be naïve to do so.
A launch can only do better than others but there are like not a single launch that doesn't have downtimes for hotfixes and maintenances.
And expect queues, long ones.
Imagine a Black Friday rush that one can see clips on youtube.

As an aside, I was an extremely active WoW player for a very long time, and quite active on their forums, therefore if we must, I was quite definitely part of the "WoW community".
Well well, if you ever get to Elemental, or onto the OCE servers, come find me, Ill tell you my secret identity.:cool:
I was stuck behind Raubahn's MSQ during Stormblood early access, but I was still able to log in every day.
I got two jobs to 70 before I got through the MSQ bottleneck, DRG 70 entirely in PVP and in about three hours. PVP at Stormblood launch was insane. You got a massive amount of exp, and the same amount win or lose. It was amazing. Levelled so fast. Sadly they quickly nerfed PVP exp.
I didn't really feel like Stormblood's launch was a disaster. I was able to get on and do things. I just had to adjust my plan and finish MSQ a bit later.
Expect longe quene times to the server and some instances and maybe a few server crashes.
Due to the new gained popularity these times will be a bit longer then in the SHB early access.
And I think the biggest issues will be caused by Ddos attack's.
I don't think itll be as bad as people think it will be
ShadowBringer also had way more people than Stormblood,Stormblood only messed up because of 2 story instances at the start of the expansion so just about everyone was bottle necking the game,Shadowbringer didnt have any story instance till after the first dungeon because they learned their mistake.
we will have long log in ques and maybe a dungeon instance crash but i dont expect anything like HW or SB
Well, what happens huh?
I'll probably look to my right, watching the empty chair, feeling sad again that nobody sits there beside me.
The game always manages to take my mind off things, but if the servers crash the sadness returns. I'll sit there for a while, checking the game for a little while, hoping the servers are back on.
After a few minutes I'll probably give up, go to the kitchen to get a snack to help me cope better.
I'll sit there watching an anime or something, eating, waiting for the game to come back online, hoping I'll get to play again before going to bed.
Other than that, the world will most likely keep spinning, the servers will eventually come back online, and we'll be wasting our time playing the game for great many reasons again.
Have we ever had any kind of compensation in XIV?
I wanna say we got a couple days from the arr launch?
Oh yeah we got a week!
Whatever might happen, just prepare for the worst.
When it's out it's out, regardless of server issues.
well as a long time ffxiv vet i have been theu 4 expanions arr hw sb and sb all had problems at launch and with time were corrected but to have all theser people cry about getting everything fixed before launch will not work when everyone hits the servers at launch it will put a lot of strerss on the servers and cause problems and they will shut down the servers to fix the problems just like ever other expanison launch for me i will be their at launch and deal with it while the rest of you just cry about so for everyone else who has been their and gotten thru this good luck and have fun with the new launch.
Anyone coming from wow would have a bit of anxiety regarding an expansion launch that's for sure but as I've been through each of XIV's expansion launches, they don't even come close to any of the disasters wow has had when it comes to launch days. XIV servers on early access launch almost never crash and if they do aren't down for much time. The biggest hiccup they ever had was with Stormblood launch and the whole "Raubahn EX" stuff which wasn't even all that bad, you just had to wait a hot minute to get into a solo instance. Like others have said Shadowbringers launch was even better than all the others, almost nothing went wrong. I believe they will be prepared as they can be even with the big influx of wow players recently. I have hope :)
I expect a similar experience that we got in SHB, which from memory was pretty smooth unless I'm getting old and forgot.
Dunno. Maybe I'll go play with my dog while they fix the servers.
I expect a DDOS attack. Someone always tries to ruin everyone's fun on early release day.
If I can't get in, I'll just go play something else or hang out with my cats. It's no biggie.
Nothing as SE as bad as they can get so far pulled each expression really well. There clearly some waits and small servers over loads but not longer that 2 days.they are not Amazon. And I am far from some one that loved SE
Something I really wish is that they unlocked Reaper already.
So we could level it to 80 and play the story right away as Reaper.
I'm having flashbacks to Raubahn EX, with the lines people were forming. Good times.
But yeah, it's gonna be fine. Long login queues, maybe some disconnects. It's gonna be fine.
I figure some longer login queues, maybe a server crash or two, the inevitable DDOS attacks, but nothing that will really cause many problems for Early Access. I intend to spend those 4 days leveling Reaper and Sage to 80, and once that's done, then dipping a toe into MSQ, I really want to savor the end of the story arc, not down it in a huge gulp.
do you even get anything if you reach endgame fast?
the only weekly thing is tomestones but do those even start at expansion launch? I only played stormblood at launch and quit part way because the story was boring.
whats the point, gonna go level sage
I hate to say I told you so...
Hooray for Switch backlog!
