I suppose they could monitor what people are doing for AFK flagging. If you haven't changed anything in your configuration, killed, gathered, or crafted anything for an hour, then you should be marked AFK and logged off when someone else needs to log in and the server is full.
Another option is to make it easier to log in. With WoW, I do the following to log in on my last character used (from the launcher):
Click PLAY
Click Enter World
25 seconds. - If my IP changed, I'd have to enter my password, and tap the authenticator notification on my phone, (No need to enter the number.)
With FFXIV, I need to:
Enter Password.
Unlock phone, start authenticator, enter the magic number.
Click PLAY
Click START
Click character name (Even if it's the only one I have)
Click OK (to confirm that I just clicked my only character name.)
Wait for queue, 15-25 players no matter what time of day. (Exodus)
79 seconds on last attempt.

I got hit with the auto-logout sequence earlier, but came back just in time to stop it. Absentmindedly did some other things and went afk again. The second time there was no timer. The game just kicked me out. lol Apparently it had had enough of my crap.
