island sanctuary

He talks for almost 10 minutes, but I'm still not entirely sure this is instanced housing... or even what Island Sanctuaries even really are...

He keeps referring to it as "content" so it seems to be a different kind of housing from what we'd normally think of. But he also mentions furniture? But not in a way that indicates it'll just be 1:1 with regular housing, and I'm not sure if we'll even be able to use housing items after he went out of his way to explicitly distance Island Sanctuaries from Animal Crossing. Yet he says we start with a blank canvas and we place buildings and gather materials and roam with minions, so it sounds like it's more of an island builder than anything related to housing.
Especially when he says "things like tending to crops and [raising animals] is more the concept we were going with here."

Honestly, I'm even more confused than I was before lol...

I'm anticipating something very similar to the mog gardens in XI.

It does at least sound like something of an alternative for the housing experience. As they explain, it's a sanctuary for the player, but with different features (e.g. being able to let your minions run around freely). How much freedom we'll have when decorating it, whether there will even be interiors in the structures to decorate, whether tending crops will be the same as housing garden functionality, etc. are all questions that we don't have answers to. It may or may not, for example, have chocobo stables (although they would certainly fit the theme). A marketboard or a mailbox to access I would find less likely, thematically.

That may be enough to satisfy some players who can't otherwise access current housing. I am wondering how they can support an instanced island for everyone that wants one, given past problems with instanced content being accessed by too many players at once.

If we're able to make our islands into a semblance of an estate with gardens, complete with full landscaping and outdoor furniture placement, I'll be super happy even if we don't get a house with an interior. An apartment for interior decorating and the island for landscaping will be plenty for me.

That said, if the sanctuaries will actually have true housing available I wouldn't complain. ;)

I'm super duper excited for this. Maybe it'll be WoW's WoD garrisons in FFXIV flavour, with different buildings and a solo instance? Letting my minions run amok in a space was an idea I adored entertaining the thought of, and if this is in there I'm hyped. I just worry it will be more expensive than regular housing, or that "tending crops" won't include gardening. It's not like I would not bother with this at all if it doesn't completely equate to normal houses, but my pining for a plot won't go away - a feeling I can't seem to shake off.

From what little bit has been said I think this is a positive development if it allows a player access to some of the functions that are currently only available to house plot owners. One question I have and did not see in any of the materials referenced is are these island persistent during times when a player is unsubscribed? Since YoshiP talks about it as content I am hoping it is since it would be a shame if developing an island was for naught if you decide to take a break.

I'm not expecting anything related to housing. They always seem proud of their janky housing system and never take seriously anything that suggests an alternative such as instanced housing.

What little there is suggests farming and ranching.

Honestly, the way it was discussed actually makes it sound quite a bit more fully featured than I thought it would be, especially long term once they are able to implement what they have in mind for the content. I also think that the possibility of actual outdoor housing items is back in play. YoshiP was a little vague about it in the wording but depending on interpretation it certainly seems possible.

Hmm.. it’s giving me Genshin Impact vibes minus the access to a personal house. In that game, we could place buildings, gardens, landmass (random rocks, cliffs,etc) along with having our characters stand around commenting along with animals we could place that roam a bit. It has its only lovely nuances (like how much is allowed to be placed based on loading ability) but it’s kind of in. I could look forward to this version of it

See, we can list all the things that it's gonna have, but my poor brain is having a hard time putting together what that stuff is gonna look like in FF14.
Once it's in game and we can see it I'm probably gonna look at it and go, "huh... it's got gathering, and here is where minions roam. All these things we were told to expect are literally right here." But until then I'm having a surprisingly hard time trying to piece this content together from what they've told us.

As a role-player, the ability to have friends visit my island has increased my excitement and interest by quite a bit.

Well, the housing concept is absolutely staggering in size. There's so many ways to furnish your own space I think a person could sink hundreds of hours into it.

I'd like to try it out one day when housing becomes available to players.
Hopefully that's what this island sanctuary is... cuz I think housing has been in development since before ARR and they haven't launched it yet.

Have you played Asassins Creed 3, the native american one? Dark Cloud (ps2 era), Animal Crossing (of course, they reference this themselves), Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley?

FF7 when you get to chocobo ranch? WoW Garrisons (there were a number of quite cool things they did with that system, but they also had a number of quite not so cool things also mixed in with abandonment which is really unfortunate).

I know I just listed quite the variety lol. :D.. But I think it's going to have relationships, if not just distant ones, to systems like those above (how I'm imagining it, in a spider web of ideas like those above).

You're going to get this island, like which FFXI had called mog islands, there will be I assume some spaces unlocked already, which includes a place to start gathering / farming, through progression likely a lot through the island itself but maybe outside too, you expand your island's capabilities (I imagine, not exactly confirmed). So you might have a bare-ish, island that has some places of interest cluttered that you have to clear out, clearing them out gains you access to them, you can start placing minions down to give it a living vibe of your own choosing, placing buildings like a windmill or a barn (for raising animals).

I don't like this example because it makes it sound 'cheap', when I think and really hope it does well and people love it, but you might imagine some concepts may line up to those farm mobile games lol.

This is at least what the beginning of what I'm imagining. Especially since I have had wanted a content like this for a while, so if feedback was involved in this thing then things like Dark Cloud, islands, personal space, etc were all frequent desires.

Yoshida himself said that some on the team are fans of the Animal Crossing / Stardew like games (I think it was the latter, but recently he said Animal Crossing so I'm going to combine them for my brain lol). It wouldn't be reasonable to expect a complete game to be within a complete game, so it wont be that deep (most likely), but potentially if it is received well and the dev team liked making it we could certainly wish it a long future ;).

Honestly from the interview I think that Yoshida asked people in a really clear way for them to tamper their expectations regarding this content. And I feel like a lot of people are taking things out context and saying stuff such as "it will be animal crossing!! it will have personal housing!" when there is almost nothing indicating any of this. The description of the content was incredibly vague.

Personally I'm avoiding thinking about this particular thing and creating theories around it. Endwalker has a lot of things on it's plate - a delayed ultimate, the end of the arc, a new race, two new jobs, etc, etc, if anything I'm afraid of hyping it and getting a ishgardian restoration-esque thing. I will save my feedback/wishies foir when we actually have a clear vision of what it is.

I'm still getting WoW Garrison vibes from this. Instead of a walled fortress, you get an island. You'll be able to select the buildings you place. You'll have a place to grow things. You'll have minions running around.

What it won't have, unlike Garrisons, is player power progression attached and that's a good thing. No one will feel forced into participating if the content doesn't appeal to them.

If you are referring to me then I feel you may have skim read me, because I literally say what Yoshida said. Which is he himself says animal crossing but /that/ it isn't going to be that crazy because that is beyond expectations.

Not many else referenced that game so I felt it was me, yet I was the one also saying Yoshida technically didn't say it will have furniture moving in the interview people referenced. Managing expectations. So I really feel taken out of context and only skim read upon.

So is this true or no? Pointing specifically at the Meoni screenshot. Cause the way they phrased it is that there will be housing similar with ability to place furniture which alludes to instanced housing or players being provided with a free house in IS. I've seen a screenshot in one of the housing discords that also says that housing/furniture/etc. isn't confirmed. Anyone have clarification?

I'd say let's just wait for Live Letter part 2, probably they gonna mention it.

This "instanced housing" on the island may not be what people expect it to be. Apartments are instanced housing. The island might have preset buildings and furniture on a list that you can place in specific spots, completely separate from the existing crafted furniture, floors and wallpapers.

This is kind of my thoughts on it. ^
I don't see a point of putting in a lottery system if they're just going to basically invalidate it by putting in instanced housing through IS. I'm of the mindset that it will be one size: either apt or a small house with no upgrades except maybe exterior. I really don't think they would allow for medium or mansion sized housing to be a part of it.

What if it's a separate leveling system? We all come in as level 1 inexperienced farmers and level up to unlock buildings, new areas to explore for materials, crafting recipes (like furniture), new animals or minions, etc. That I think would make everything make sense with the other changes coming.

Certainly hoping we'll at the very least be able to use current furniture, if only to boom the market and make some decent moolah.

I highly doubt Meoni is intentionally causing confusion but it would be nice if we see clarification on that screenshot (furniture one), it's going around like we've full power instanced housing but I can find no sign that is the case XD.

Won't really be decent if everyone is flooding it with the same stuff and undercutting like crazy. I don't know about your server but mine at least has a habit of people undercutting by thousands or tens of thousands everytime you take a breath.

Prices go down when new housing gets released. Everyone gets the same brilliant idea of selling furniture, build up a huge supply, and then undercut each other until they're literally losing gil with every sale. I saw a guy craft 150 orchestrions when they cost around 100k to make and sold for 150k. The day new housing released, they were down to 60k a piece in mere hours and never recovered.

I mean even if that does turn out to be the case, it's a new system that could potentially be further expanded upon if IS turns out to be a big success. It's certainly possible that it could be something apartment sized or small house size, but later updated to allow for larger buildings Medium and Large. With it being a new system we don't really have the information to be able to say one way or another, but as stated it being a new system there's room and potential for future iteration that the current housing system can not accommodate in several facets.

Given that SE has been holding on to the neighborhood/community aspect of current housing so tenaciously, it wouldn't surprise me if we get both instanced housing on IS and "public" housing in the Wards. This is the ideal time for them to solve the housing crisis while maintaining face. "People who want a Ward/Neighborhood house will have the option of new plots and people who want instanced housing [to have a house at all] can have one on their island.

If they don't make personal housing a thing on the Island Sanctuaries they'll be missing out on their one and only Golden Opportunity to solve the housing issue in the near future and gain some measure of good will back from the player base.
