Plainsfolk Lalafell have those unnatural, cat-like eyes. Dunesfolk Lalafell have more single-color anime-esque eyes that look more natural. Lalafell are also the only race in the game where all of the males faces look good, IMO (though admittedlly there is little variation between them).
4 male races in FFXIV have severe problems. Elezen have unnaturally long necks that requires you to limit yourself to a handful of coats with neckties and high collars. Male Roegadyn don't have any good playabe faces (Gosetsu' face is good but you can't get it yourself), and have unappealing posture. Hrothgar have limited customization and weird posture. Male Viera are a complete "no" to me. And everyone else only have 1 or 2 faces that look decent. Kinda sad coming from WoW, where almost all of the faces look at least decent, if not good, and Blizzard adds new customization options regularly, whereas FFXIV does not.
It also really doesn't help that FFXIV's lighting is rather bad. Most of the time a character is in shadow, or sometimes they will have too much lighting shining on them from a certain direction, bleaching them out. The characters only ever look really good in the few handcrafted cutscenes with lighting, or after spending several minutes in gpose trying to get the lighting right.
I love WoW's character models. The one gripe I have with them is that their faces were not rigged for ingame close ups shots. It was only until very recently that we finally got an ingame cutscene with a close up shot where the facial acting actually looked decent.
I guess I'm beating a dead horse but yeah, the non-human races of WoW were awesome. Kinda disappointing that every FFXIV race is just another variation of a human.
I personally prefer Lalafell to Tarutaru but the latter's almost "wooden doll" appearance was unique.
I actually find the Tarutaru in FFXI to be cuter than the lalafell we have in FFXIV. However I prefer the facial design of the Miqo'te over the more feline looking faces of the Mithra in FFXI. TBH when it comes to the 3 other races in FFXI and their counterparts here in terms of faces they look the same overall to me aside from the FFXIV side having more detail.
Personally I rarely play a tall character in a game if given a choice because there are few tall character options I find in games that I really like and also tend to not be a real fan of bulky muscular builds either. At the same time I don't often play really short characters (in that 3ft-ish range) in games either unless I find their design and appearance really cute.
New fashion police in the hood.
They look like typical animated characters to me.
Have you ever heard of the disorder Prosopagnosia? It causes people to have difficulty perceiving/recognizing faces and facial expressions. A common complaint people with this disorder make is that other faces look 'weird' to them. Perhaps your dislike for in-game faces is an aspect of something like this.

I don't care about WoW or the artstyle - it's now become more cartoonish/ whimsical similar to Wildstar (I actually liked the way wildstar looked though) My BF who did play WoW wanted the art style to become more realistic/ darker
I'm aware of how limited the character creator was in XI
It's not that I'm not appreciative that we can pick and choose noses, lip size, eye shape etc but it all could use a touch up. ( Like being able to wear more than 1 face paint at a time & new hair & eye colour saturations. )
I'd be for new faces in general but more for new hairstyles or NPC hairstyles added for player use. Actually- Hilda's ponytail & Lyse's ponytail > anything else
Maybe new faces with updates similar to Viera (eyelashes/freckles/new make-up etc) with the addition of a few new hairstyles Or share Viera hairstyles with the other races.
It won't happen though, I do not think the character creator will ever be updated- The probability of us getting new hairstyles is more likely.
The fact they've repeatedly added new hairstyles to me points to that being the easiest thing to add to the character creator.
Funny enough as much as I disliked WoW from it's visual style to how the game actually played I did enjoy and like Wildstar which ppl often called WoW in space. It was a shame the service of that game ended some years ago.
There is definitely an creepy vibe with certain races/faces. I personally can't stand the Au Ra face 1 because of this, for example.
And yeah, Viera and hrothgar have some nice polygons/texturing on their faces compared to other races so it isn't as bad, probably because they are new, the other faces need updating to match. I can't go back to Au Ra or Miqo'te due to it.
And Lalafell look like hell-spawn when they grin and cheer, those little gremlins. I am also creeped out by them, OP.
Changed to Hrothgar for the moment, I do like it better than Elezen. Thanks for all the replies.
Ugly? No. Weird? Sometimes. I find WoW characters to be those things in my opinion..I mean, in game model characters.
WoW graphics look way more modern. Just compare BfA and SL to SB and SHB. Feels like dropping that crapstation 3 support didn't benefit us apart from getting main city without a loading screen
I wish character models would finally get new textures, it would have been about time with Endwalker.
I'd love for them to clean up the textures on some of the older races as well as fix the hat/hair issue on the new races. The biggest thing stopping me from playing viera is the limited hair and hat options.
I've pretty much played every race apart from Roe and Hroth and that's more because I can't find a face option I like.
In a dream situation for me, they'd rehaul the character creation with even more face options and customisation options as well as more colour options for hair, skin and eyes. Like aura for example: I love the last face but the horns are horrible on it and love the horns on the 2nd face but hate the face :D
The biggest problem is actually customization options (textures too). A good hairstyle can completely alter the look of a character, similarly something as little as stubble could make a big difference for male hyur. On top of that, I think this game has a lot of almost good looking outfit pieces, by that I mean there is always something extra on it; something that ruins it, or makes it difficult to dye. A good outfit makes a big difference for a character's look.
You literally called yourself baka over there. Please enlighten us all as to what my grammatical mistakes were, it should be interesting. Actually, come do it on the Japanese forum, we could do with more posts over there. I really don't think that borderline dead community is going to be affected by a few @#$posts, whether they be yours or mine. You'll never get better if you don't practice and mistakes either. And judging from your post you could do with a lot more correction.
I need to know how anyone can take the OP seriously with a signature like that. It keeps me up at night. Truly it does.
What do you mean by that exactly? No, they're not "Humans" as in they belong to our species and etc. Humans as in Humanoid looking then yes. We've talked about it in the other thread on this. Hrothgars are the most beastly looking race, and they're aren't any less beastly looking than say the Lupin. The "beast" tribes are very vastly looking different from each other as well. In other words, these terms are primarily social constructs created by the elite of Ul'dah, and they're not used either in the Far East or in the First.

Was talking about my signature lol but I'll comment on this anyway.
WoW kind of pioneered that whole cartoony look that a lot of games use, especially on mobile. So it should be credited for that. WoW's artstyle actually changed over time though. When it launched the artstyle was different but it was actually very impressive looking. Hard to imagine now but this was before even games like ES:Oblivion.
I do love cartoony artstyle myself. For example, I love the artstyle of DragonBall Xenoverse games. I do like the WoW recent artstyle from 2014 more than the old one which is pretty dated to say the least even though I don't really like it. I also like Overwatch artstyle a lot as well. Oblviion's graphics were great back then, but now, it looks very dated and ugly if you don't use mods to replace the head and body models. I like FFXIV artstyle which has a distinct Final Fantasy flavor to it.
I dunno, I think most of the races (Lalafel still remind me of the Capybara tribe from Granado Espada) and characters can be endearing until their expressions start to exaggerate. Some of them are downright adorable.
On my way to commit war crimes against Lalafell slanderers.

Know this is bait but...
You be crazy if you say Ferra looks ugly. Thighlander squad rolling in.

Then you leave me no choice.

Honestly the only ugly race are Roes, and that for their whack body shape. Lalafells are a meme race so they exist outside the paradigm.
Don't be upset that you will now always see Lalafel as

Even in 1.0, while the models looked better, character creation was very limited (the same option 1, option 2, option 3 selection as currently instead of sliders) which I always found weird coming from a company with a reputation of putting graphics and aesthetics as top priority over everything else.
E: why is this topic classified as bait again?
They're decent, a texture update would honestly fix a lot of problems. Moreso I'm always wondering if they have a randomizer choosing NPC appreances for side story characters when they have like blue hair with orange higlights and pink eyes with scars and weird makeup.
Personally, it took me a very long time to come to FF14, because I disliked the character creation that offers very limited appearance options compared to other games like Blade and Soul, Phantasy Star 2, so and so.
Still, once I get used to how the game looks, I find them not as bad as I used to think. Now I absolutely adore my little popoto girl.
Texture wise, perhaps. But the exaggerated proportions of the armor and characters was very not standard at the time. It was a design necessity for WC3 so to make each unit identifiable from the isometric perspective, and that design philosophy got carried over into WoW. Open world PvP was also really big early on in WoW so it was important to be able to identify who was who from a distance (race and therefore whether or not they were a friend or foe, which class they were and thus what abilities they could use and their weaknesses, etc).
