The new Steam Deck, do you think it will run FFXIV?

Well I have nothing better to do so I just checked them out, out of curiosity :P

I preordered a steam deck today, should've done it the day it announced, now the time I'm gonna get it is Q3 2022 instead of Dec 2021.. huuuge demand, wonder how much bigger the line is gonna get.

For the most part, I expect FFXIV to run on the Steam Deck (Windows installation not required), but I'm not going to expect it to run particularly well. FFXIV on Wine or Proton already runs pretty reliably and I have no double that SteamOS will support Proton or given that it's still runing desktop linux, a user could install Lutris and then have their hand held through the entire installation process + the couple of fixes Linux users need to launch/play without issues.

But I do expect there to be some issues like:
- The Steam Deck has a resolution of 1280x800. That's some pretty limited screen space and given small mobile screens, text is going to probably be quite difficult to read.
- We don't know what controller support is going to be like yet. I'd imagine it's going to be just fine in SteamOS, but if a user decides to just boot into Windows directly, are they going to have a driver in that case? (Probably yes, but it could be shotty dinput basics).
- The AMD APU being used isn't exactly console-graphics amazing, let alone gaming PC tier. Given that it's RDNA2 instead of Vega cores, users can probably expect better than the current APU/integrated graphics offerings, but I wouldn't expect to be playing on better than low/medium settings. Then again, with the screen resolution, it's not like you'd notice higher quiality graphics.

Citation needed. And Valve is in a position that they can do whatever they want, they are not a publicly traded company and therefore don't need to listen to whiny demands such as the one above.

Well, speaking from experience, I can say with confidence that FF14 runs great under Proton for me and I don't foresee having that many issues of getting it to run on the Steam Deck. Though your mileage may vary

I think the issues that you bring up are largely non-issues because I don't think many people who purchases this device will do so to play games like FF14 in handheld mode.

But touching on the issues you bring up though:

* Resolution is a non-issue for me, particularly if you can connect it to a dock and have to access to HDMI and DP outputs.

* AFAIK Xinput is available for Linux, directinput is not because it is a M$ legacy API.

* Your concerns about the AMD APU I quite frankly do not get when it is far more powerful than the four year or so old Nvidia Tegra X1 SOC housed in the Nintendo Switch. And both current-gen consoles are running similar AMD APU architectures along with the RDNA2 as the Steam Deck. So, for its price point and that you can turn it into a literal PC by connecting it to a dock and hooking a monitor and hooking KBM to it, it is a pretty good deal.

Sadly, since my purchase isn't through steam, whether it can or can't would seem to be a nonfactor.

This won't have the benefit of consoles tho, where games are engineered towards the hardware.

You can do a lot with optimization, which the stream deck. Sorry. Steam deck won't get

Sure, and? It is not like FF14 is a game that is hard to run nor is it very taxing. And the game did launch first on PS3 which is basically a toaster at this point compared to the following generations so your argument is irrelevant.

That was my point. The ps3 had a lot of optimization done. This won't. And I drop frames with a 5800x and a 3080 in high traffic areas. This thing has a low power cpu. It's going to melt.


You'll get slightly better than igpu levels of performance. 30-45 fps on low settings in non-taxing areas.

Post with a screenshot because I don't believe you. Because I am on far more meager hardware for my Linux box, with a i7-5820K and a 1080 Ti. Not that I am ruling out that it is Windows 10 that sucks balls, as usual.

There were over 200 people in Limsa. I dropped to around 45 fps. But I also play at 3440x1440.

FFXIV is amazing in Arch Linux, unfortunately we still face some issues related to launcher version. The modern launcher from ShB doens't run, instead, you need to use the classical one.

Performancewise it'll be surprisingly good for FFXIV imo. The CPU cores are all on the same CCX and with a unified cache which will help things, whilst the RDNA2 IGPU side of things coupled with the fast ram should be surprisingly capable.

By comparison my HP zbook x2 tablet could run medium/low at 30-60 fps at 1080p comfortably anywhere except super crowded areas where the visible player cap would get hit. That was with a U series quad core i7 and a fairly meagre Maxwell era Quadro. The Steamdeck obliterates that in GPU performance.

Performance in huge crowds could go either way though. This game can get highly bound by a single thread in busy areas and performance in these situations was always disappointing on a 3800x (switching to a 5800x saw an uplift of over 50% outside the Bozja entrance at peak hours for me). This side of things will depend on how well the Deck can allow it's CPU to boost up under a predominantly single thread workload but with light usage on the other cores. My Tablet coped surprisingly well for about a minute in these crowds with the CPU pushing north of 4.5ghz for a period, but it couldn't sustain that for long and performance would quickly tail off pretty severely after a time.

I'm sure it'll run fine - Valve are working hard to make sure the whole library works by the time it launches - you can run the SE version too (not just Steam, SteamOS is just the OS).

I'm hyped my 300+ Steam games will be available on launch, ironically, my 2 copies of FFXIV are on PC (non-steam) and PS5, so i'll just be installing the normal version, might donk W10/11 on if required.
