Regardless of what Blizz is doing- it's true, 100% of the complaints about the game I've got from friends trying FFXIV recently have to do with the website/customer support on buying it/the trial. Definitely something SE needs to look into.

The Blizzard store and it's website is not all that different, I think this is just a convenient narrative some folk want to spin; I mean yes, the Mogstation has a couple more processes and steps then most other websites, but that is all it really is; "steps" - it's not complicated or some foreign alien language, it's just tedious i think for some folks.
3 hours sounds like an extreme exaggeration, but I do imagine the whole multi-variant of the game aspect on top of the outdated appearance / setup adds to this element of 'feeling' like it's just a bit much. It was a long time ago so I can't recall how it was like to make my account, it looked different back then compared to now, it's a bit better now but does feel a bit like I'm looking at the interface my work uses to display work related details (rather than inviting, easy, or one might say 'dummy proof' design, it's more informative, but perhaps for some overwhelming).
I also doubt that too many are giving up at the door, but I do imagine if you started with a bad experience it may not 'help' as you make your way into the game and then you may have extra negative incentives to judge the game (pre-painting the game experience). Even when I 'struggled' to re-download the game it only took me like 5 minutes. Looked at lodestone, saw no easy obvious button for it, found that annoying, did make a suggestion for them to change that - hopefully it went through lol, and then just googled how to download the game, followed a reddit post, to an imo, meh / potentially sketchy looking website (I'm speaking of the official download page, or at least what it looked like when I looked last, as I did then cross reference the url not to lose my account to an installer built-in with trojan lol).
Relatively quick, certainly not multi hour experience, imo at least, but if I compare what I've had to do with blizzard, it's so easy to do pretty much anything over there (of the things at least that I've had to do, it's not like I've done a full rundown of all their systems). From downloading all the way to just things like their authentication system allows you to just say 'yes' on your phone rather than type stuff in (though you can do that still).
So I doubt they're losing people left and right for it, maybe a fraction because people might care that much, but it doesn't feel high end lol. Not impossible but each extra nuisance is well, an extra nuisance. One above commented on maybe some extra steps, and maybe to them that's just 2 more seconds of their day, but to others those extra steps might just be eye roll inducing lol. There is a whole field on user experience for a reason, for some it's really big influence to the 'narrative' of their feelings.
