Soken revealed that he had actually been in hospital battling cancer for most of last year while continuing to work as much as he was able. It's now currently in full remission.

Soken has been battling cancer since around 5.3ish. He composed "To the Edge" from his hospital bed basically, and Yoshi P only let him keep working because he begged to be treated no different than before. None of the dev team besides Yoshi knew about it till recently, and the doctor let Soken out of the hospital because he's in full remission atm.

The music is the soul of this game. Thank you Soken!

Now, can we petition mandatory vacation time for him??

Just watched the video, really got tears to my eyes. I had family members got and killed by cancer so it hit really close to home.
I love the dev team even more after this speech, damn!

A friend just brought up that we should have a Soken NPC alongside the Yoshi-P one, I think Soken more than deserves it at this point. Especially with how much blood, sweat, and tears he put into the music for this game.

Not only has his work produced so many beautiful pieces that have come to mean a lot to me, but he's constantly been a source of smiles on social media and in public appearance. An amazing man.

All the players that have the audacity to call the dev team "lazy," because they didn't get the content they wanted, need to check themselves

I never thought SE had a composer that could equal or even rival the great Nobuo Uematsu in compositional skill and sheer creativity and imagination - I was wrong. Totally, utterly wrong. And that is a great thing! SE found it well and truely with Masayoshi Soken.

I continue to be blown away by Soken's amazing work, and, more than that, he is also such a funny, down-to-earth person with an awesome sense of humour. You can see he really loves what he does rather than just "it's a job", and puts his passion into his music. I was so saddened to hear about his illness, but I was so heartened to see the genuine compassion Yoshi and his fellow developers showed towards him, and it should go without saying I am so glad to hear he's in remission.

So Maestro Soken, as a humble PLD, I thank you so much for the wonderful music you continue to share with all of us Warriors of Light, that brings Hydaelyn and the emotion and landscape of it's story and people to life in lush melodies and amazing themes! Music has always been one of my favourite elements of the FF series in general, and your contribution to FFXIV and the series continues to amaze me with every track!

Once again, Mr Soken, I'm so glad to hear you're getting better, and thank you so much for the music! <3

The fact that Soken continued to work while battling cancer is both an inspiration to anyone and also something I can’t comprehend. The fact he cares so much for this game and wanted to continue to do his best for it truly is awe inspiring.

I have been a XIV subscriber since 1.0 because I genuinely felt Yoshida and his team was so honest that I wanted to support that. And I cannot believe I was able to be experiences one of gamings most epic adventure :)
