Major changes needed for housing

On a side note I think SE needs to pick a stance on housing do they want it be to be finite resources that is meant to be scarce or do they want it to be viable for everyone.

Sorry reached my post limit before. Though when the restriction was placed it caused issues with FC and plots. So I think it was a patch or two later they removed that restriction regarding 1 personal and 1 FC now you can have 1 personal and 8 FC. Though I stopped playing around SB I just recently came back and have picked up numerous FC plots with the help of friends we are going to try and relocate to a same ward come 6.1 so we can make a small community.

Do you mean you can personally purchase 8 FC houses in the same world on 8 characters in the same service account?

Or do you mean you can own 8 FC houses via transference of FC leadership that comes with a house each?

I did buy two during the mass demo timer drop a month or so ago after they enabled the timer. The other six I bought off reddit. From what I have been told by that community the fc restrictions regarding transferring was the loop hole that was used when it was in place though as it stands now you can buy multiple fc plots per character.

Though I have seen conflicting info regarding. I was unable to try and buy all 8 just due to the lack of supply though I will be trying come 6.1 since I have been using road to 70 to level toons on other accounts for that reason.

He used the loophole and got 7 additional fcs using alts on the same world and most likely his friends did too

I am so glad that I no longer care to own a house, though I did enjoy my small house on Shirogane for the time that I had it.

Its weird to me as well, I am not in agreement with people taking advantage of the system. I have spent more then my share of time trying to think up solutions and find most have loop holes that can be exploited heavily.

All of the drama over housing is deliberately caused by the devs, which they could have easily avoided by just copying Everquest2's housing, that existed almost a decade before this game: https://eq2.zam.com/wiki/Housing_%28EQ2%29

Which is not only a lot more useful, but a lot prettier. New players get an apartment for free.

If I wanted a nice house in a game, I'd go back to EQ2. But I don't. I've got the best guild hall (fortress on an island so large that I get lost in it, including an underground cave with boat dock), and nearly unlimited mansions in EQ2 (ok, so just 20, but more than I can keep up with).

My point is that I believe the devs have caused this problem intentionally, because I don't think they are stupid, not by a long shot.

Edited Note: Probably money and time sinks, and forcing you to subscribe to keep it, while EQ2 did not, last time I played. But not something that works on me, considering the lack of benefits vs. cost and if I were into decorating, which I'm not, I've played better games for that.

Again, going to say (since this exact suggestion came up in another housing thread):
- This isn't fair for FC leaders. So our members can have private houses but because we choose to open an FC, we lose the right to it. Why do we have to give up privacy just because we want to help people? There's nothing wrong with an FC having their own estate and also being able to own our own house. The issue is that FCs are set up so that you can just inherit new ones.

You're also heavily assuming that members will have housing to link. Myself, my bf (current leader) and another couple are the only ones in our FC who own housing and I doubt that they want to give up their right to privacy for the sake of an FC either if he and I left the game.

So, please. No. Not this. How about we either just fix apartments so they're actually appealing or the devs rip apart how FCs are coded into the game and make it so they can be tracked the same as personal houses?

Yes you're entitled to a private house just like everyone else. I wouldn't worry about it the dev team isn't about to change that. They certainly recognize the difference. I have a small FC I share with friends and my alts on Spriggan with a private right next to it. I'm entitled to my privacy just like anyone else.

I didn't say it has to be the FC leader's house. If not enough players in the FC have a house, you could pool your Gil and get a homeless FC member a house they can share with everyone. Or is the problem that you, as the FC leader, don't trust any of your members to have control over the FC house?

Either people can inherit a house with FC leadership, or FC housing isn't tied to FC leadership. There are no other options.

It has nothing to do with either. I just want to be able to own an FC house and a personal, as should everyone. Everyone should be allowed to open an FC and have a personal house to do what they want with. It's nothing deeper than that. Why should anyone be forced to give up their privacy or their right to open an RP venue or a crafting shop in their personal house for example, for the sake of their FC?

And yes, camping for a new plot for each member that needs one sounds lovely and not at all like it doesn't have the potential of taking days or weeks to get one. God forbid someone needs to step down for a real life emergency and a replacement plot can't be found in time so everyone is homeless.

True, they might not have broken any rules but it doesn't excuse the fact that they are greedy and won't give up those plots so others can enjoy the game. Player greed is the real problem in my opinion. No one needs a housing portfolio consisting of full/half wards of houses they own. Why does one player need 15 houses?! Answer: they don't.

If the point was to use houses to keep players subscribed, they would never suspend auto-demolition nor would apartments be free from demolition.

I honestly don't think the sub money is their objective with the system considering how often demolition has been suspended.

Housing helps keep me subscribed not because I fear losing my house (I've lost one in the past, had to wait 8 months before I could get another and would deal with it if I lost this one) but because it gives me something I enjoy doing when I need a break from other content. My FC will tell you how much I like to decorate/redecorate, helping some of them decorate their newly purchased houses when they weren't feeling comfortable about doing it themselves (a few of them are now frequent decorators as well).

How many sub dollars is SE losing because other players who would do likewise can't get a house at all so there's nothing to keep them interested once other content is consumed? It's a double-edged sword relying on a limited resource system to keep players subscribed. You've got players who only stay subscribed because they fear losing something they wouldn't be using. You've got players who unsubscribe because they can't get something they would be using.

I think it's fair to say that the devs designed the system intentionally with a specific vision of what they wanted housing to be like (the neighborhood thing) but not to say they intentionally designed it to be a problem for players. That runs counter to so many of the other things they do and say.

Yes, I agree, because I don't believe the devs are incompetent at all. FF14 has the most competent devs I've ever seen in an MMO. I've loved their games since I first encountered them on an 8-bit Nintendo. I was shocked when they made me cry over the twin mages turning themselves into stone to prevent a party wipe. My reaction was that I needed to step away from games for a bit for taking them so seriously.

That obviously didn't last long. I can't even listen to Chronotrigger's Schala's theme without feeling sad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIJxrAHuk7Q Their ability to suck me into the story has never been equaled and Schala's theme is without equal as the best music I've ever heard in video game, despite it being a midi. But housing, meh. I can't get sucked into it because I've known much better. I just find it annoying without any real benefit and refuse to take part.

So while no doubt FF14 housing is working as intended, it's just not working for me. I just find it absurd.

I propose a ownership timer be added. Whereas said plot must be owned no less then 30 days for possible relocation or world transfer.

Onto the next issue. The fact that we got a outcry for housing but the team doesn\\\\'t give the players who want a house a legit chance. We all know patch day we have people sniping prime plots and stuff.

I propose a 72hour cool down period when new housing is out to give players without a chance to finally get a plot. If implemented. 2 weeks before new housing is to drop, people with established private or fc housing will not be able to make alts of any kind.

I further propose that when new housing is approaching. All new fc\\\\'s being made is suspended 4 weeks prior so we don\\\\'t have pop up fc\\\\'s.

My last tweak will draw alot of bile. Get over yourselves. Right now there are players who own multiple properties that were grandfathered in back in stormblood change. I propose this is reversed but with a few week notice so players can get stuff out of those properties.

I further recommend if this is done to advise the house they want to keep will be the last one they enter or first one they enter.

There is such alot of fixes for this but everything is half implemented and players control the market.

Instanced housing is part of the game. House interiors are instanced (you are no longer in the ward when you step inside, why it was raining in your yard but the weather inside is always Fair). Apartments are instanced.

At this point they should let the island sanctuary also function as instanced housing. Players can purchase homes and build up to the mansions on the island if they want. They can adjust prices so they equal housing wards. And the wards can then be used by free companies and social players that like the system. Short of opening a ton of extra wards to accommodate folks on each server this solves the issue. Especially if they allow you to give access to friends etc.

The apartments just are not anywhere as good as the plots. So much to collect for exterior as well as interior.

Growing plants and raising animals are not housing so Island Sanctuary doesn't satisfy the request for SE to fix the housing system.

Most house owners don't even garden as it is. You might see garden patches in yards but you rarely find anything planted in them. At best Island Sanctuary will satisfy that small percentage of players that only want a house for gardening (and may not even do that depending on what can be grown). It doesn't address the concerns of the remaining players and FCs who want a house for a variety of reasons but can't get one.

The only reason I would ever buy a house in FF14 is to grow Thavnairian onions, but of course, it's a better use of my time to buy them from the market.

I hate to say it, given the recent Asian hate in the US (I have never been given to reason fear because of my race before until now), but I think there's a cultural disconnect.

I was born in Japan, but raised in the US. My Japanese relatives live in what I consider efficiency apartments, despite the fact they are relatively wealthy (by US standards for people living in efficiency apartments). When my aunt came to visit (before Covid), it made her cry to see our houses.

i.e., having a house is much more special in Japan than the US, and so I think the devs are trying to model housing as something really uber and hard to get, as it is in Japan.

Yes, I know, owning a home is hard to get anywhere in the world.

And so I think they should use this opportunity to fulfill people's dreams of owning a home, regardless of how uber they are in this game, and their tolerance for staying up all night clicking on a sign post.

Because that's what video games are for.

The real problem is SE doesn't have enough housing for everyone who wants one. You can take away all the houses from everyone. Like EVERYONE. All personal and FC houses gone and then SE reopens the wards under the same rules as there are now - and there STILL won't be enough housing for everyone who wants one.

Edit: For example - take the FC I am in. Take our FC house, all our members (minus any alts) and we could easily take over a little more than 2 full wards just for us (that's 1 FC house and the rest all personals). We most certainly are not the only FC who would take that many wards just for us and many more FCs who could take far more wards with just one FC house and the rest personals. Multiply that by all the FCs out there. There just isn't enough housing for everyone under SEs current system. So while yes those people and/or FCs that have a half/full ward to themselves is something else, taking all that away still won't fix the fundamental problem of the current housing system.

The reason housing is limited is literally down to cash. It is a zero-gain for Sqenix to add more housing wards with much of the housing expansions being funded by the Mogstation. I can’t speak for the ishgard housing as I haven’t really been following the live letters as closely as I used to so can’t comment there. Good on them for adding, but they know it’s a money black hole.

Originally housing was meant to be FC only with some requirements in place and an alternative system for personal..even talk of cheaper pricing for personal housing when it came to be... but it never did come to be and the devs decided to open up houses to the masses without adequate supply.

Instanced housing is probably the most elegant band-aid solunion they have at this point.

Very much this... I’ve been playing ever since the end of HW and i’m yet to see the point of the ghost residential districts where you rarely see a soul that is not from your FC house

They're not talking about how many characters per world an individual can make, but about how many characters the world will support.
Hard limit the number of characters that can exist there in the first place so no areas a population super out of proportion with what housing can support.

I agree in theory (edit) that this needs to be a thing, however SE would also need to add more servers on the NA data centers at least (and have needed to for quite a while IMO). For example, NA has 24 worlds and JP has 31. According to Lucky Bancho, NA also has on average double the amount of characters on each server (I'm not counting Balmung as that world is WAY higher than that) as JP has on their servers.

Of course SE needs to add more servers. With the cross world and cross data center features, they are making it easier for people to play with friends without having to be on the same server.

Locking a server is not a bad practice if you think you can sustain/grow a population. It's the responsible thing to do so you don't have long wait times to enter every time there is a rush of people playing. It also helps within the world as you can determine how many zone instances you need to account for people flooding a particular zone for whatever reason.

Not locking a server (and not adding servers), assuming a sustainable growth in population is just bad. And if there is a massive decrease in population, then server merges would be the answer to that.

This discussion is a waste of time. Housing is a limited resource originally designed for FC only to function like a Guild Hall. It was not intended for player ownership and it is impossible to have enough servers to meet to increasing player population. The only possible resolution is to increase the size and features of the apartment. Any ideas about modify current housing model ie either short sighed or asking for impossible

What is apartment if not personal housing? Asking to modify apartment is basically asking for personal housing.

Housing might have been originally intended only for FC, but they've opened it to individual characters. So making all houses personal and limiting player characters per world is not short sighted and is not impossible.

Increasing player population just means adding more servers, which come with their own housing wards.

As for being a waste of time, most discussions are like that. We may discuss just to discuss, so feel free to join or not. The devs will do what they can and want even with player feedback.

Apartment is instanced and it does not requires to load with world space.
Two are polar opposite design; they are not the same.

You know what else is instanced? Solo quests. Ever heard of Raubahn Savage?

Oh, and housing is also instanced. They just have limited entrances via the ward system, which are their own instances as well.

With limited population per server, they can sustain a limited number of housing per world.

And asking for any improvement to apartments is equivalent to yelling into the void.

Originally housing was meant to be FC only with some requirements in place and an alternative system for personal..even talk of cheaper pricing for personal housing when it came to be... but it never did come to be and the devs decided to open up houses to the masses without adequate supply.

Instanced housing is probably the most elegant band-aid solunion they have at this point.

Yes, instanced housing is what I'm suggesting. Instanced neighborhoods even for those who prefer the social interactions in neighborhoods, such as in Everquest and Lord of the Rings Online.

While EQ2 had no instanced neighborhood housing districts last time I played it, oddly enough, because EQ2 is the gold standard for MMO housing in my book, where everyone is given a two room apartment for free, and island castles (max level guildhalls) are trivial to purchase with in-game money for high level toons. And has no requirement that you subscribe to keep them - just pay the next month's rent, which is trivial, when you decide to access your housing.

And while I cast a dim eye on Real Money Transactions in games, I don't have a problem with RMT "prestige housing" in EQ2 because they make it so it easy to purchase really nice housing with in-game money (as well as give it away as subscription rewards).

And so I think it would suck if FF14 implemented RMT housing, unless they improved housing availability generally with in game money.

The ability to have non-instanced housing isn't even on my radar as a reasonable thing to do. The fact that SE chose to do it that way is perplexing, and I suspect is rooted in cultural differences about protecting limited resources for future generations. Which they are absolutely right about, but not something that is considered much in the US (which we have good reason for, but way off topic).

I don't play games because I like the real world much.

It can if they limit the population per server AND only have personal housing.

They probably won't do it since they're too nice sometimes and may not want to upset existing owners (especially FC owners), but it's certainly a possibility.

What should the limit be?
We already can't make characters on congested worlds, so I assume the idea is to lower the limit?
