Does anyone ever feel like they're an impostor because they don't look like Ardbert?

I mean.. The story is pretty much written on the wall ahead of time, i doubt anyone would see mentions of Ardbert being our fragment on the first and think anything but "Yeah, saw that coming."; I have faith in people's ability to see through SQEX's storytelling.

Not really.. there may be a lot of RP'ers, but the circles they exist in become smaller and smaller. It happens mostly because people gravitate to set groups because they want to tell a story rather than actually play a role, or they seem to just cut people off from being part of their community if they aren't RP'ing to their immediate liking; As shown by you, as you seem more than willing to immediately label someone as a griefer.

Roxas didn't look that much like Sora. Same age, same gender but they didn't look like the same person.





I know it's the same face at an NPC level but I don't think we're supposed to draw any connection between them - Moren doesn't look at all like Asahi beyond the actual face model, which might just be recycling for the sake of it.

Mowen and Grenoldt, on the other hand... well, I assume the identicality is played for a joke more than that we actually should expect corresponding soul-shards to look alike. For all we know they're not even the same soul and it's just entirely a quirk of the universe that these people resemble each other so closely.




That weirded me out.

And all their costume choices were awful and not what my characters would wear.





I disagree with that working - I don't think it makes sense.

Looking alike, maybe. (Though even Ardbert and the stand-in WoL aren't quite identical.) But even if they did that, there's absolutely no reason we should get naming rights to the character, because he/she isn't us.

Look at it this way: if you suddenly found yourself in a parallel universe meeting your parallel self, would you have had any choice in what name they were given at birth?

It's not that your character is choosing the name, you the PLAYER are. With the assumption that whatever you give is the name they always had. If the character were your doppelganger it is very likely they would have your name or a variation of your name, maybe your name reversed, or in the language of the realm. They could just automatically give them your name, or your name backwards. But by giving you the option you can make sure it's not a nonsense name, or decide how your characters doppelganger should be named. If you don't like that's fine, but it's not even a new idea.

My point remains - we have control over our own character and nobody else.

Our doppelgänger is not us. They are coming from another world where history, culture, personal experience are completely different and it's only chance or an influence of the soul that makes us look alike. There is no reason for you to have a choice about their name.

In any case, a "souls look alike" plot sets up an expectation that lots of others will be recognisable too, and I don't particularly like that idea. It would make it more of a parallel universe at the cost of it feeling like its own genuine world with unique people in it.

What would have really weirded me out more, would have been the fact that if I had made my character to look like the basic default midlander model, which Ardbert is, due to not a single person commenting on the fact that both of us looked exactly alike. I think they handled the situation fine with out trying to do another Dark Knight blow your mind questline.

Plus it was around 12000 or so yeards since the Sundering, odds are likely that the Aumarotine souls that were sundered were filtered though the lifestream so many times that the ship of Theseus paradox kicks in and the echo is the only remnant of the original souls. Leaving the shards to have a radically altered appearance.

Regarding the nomenclature thing, there are a few issues.

1. PC Names don't always adhere to naming conventions. Consider this my Character, a Dunesfolk named Aurora, has a name that is close to but doens't match the Lalafellin naming conventions. Likewise the option to name Ardbert like that would entail that the player has access to the naming conventions of the first. Which cannot be guaranteed as the Player might have no knowledge or care that they are supposed to find a variation of their name to use for their PC's counterpart
2. An attempt to automate it would be Sisyphean in the number of work through spaghetti code they'd have to do. All the cross referencing of names in both RW languages and the naming conventions of Source and Shard alike, an then there are those with reference names that would not be translated that way. (Like say if someone named their character Kara Zor-El, would this method name their shard Carol Danvers?)
3. Oh yeah the reference and meme names themselves pose an issue no matter which way you go about it. As aforementioned the reference might not translate well and attempts might result in the shard's name having random punctuation, mispellings and Xs as if the Player was trying to get a reference name for their character only for the proper spelling to be claimed

If Sadu was a man in her supposed previous lives, there's no reason I can't have been a Midlander male in one of mine.

i never really cared, just another shard and shards of individuals can appear different enough as the First and other shards aren't really 1:1 analogues.

or i can do the thought of "well my character in the canon really is that midlander boy, but used a fantasia and my character is how she really feels deep down inside"

plus i doubt azim and azeyma look the same and i mean... their names... u know

I never much cared for the "hero" titles and roles that the storyline forces you into - yes I know that makes it dramatic but I'd prefer to just be an adventurer. As for potentially being an imposter - well in truth are we not all imposters? Has there not been a Warrior of Light with each calamity and we just happen to be the latest (or the latest reincarnation depending upon who you believe). The generic poster boy was picked simply because he is a safe look - human and ordinary enough looking to appeal to the market the designers initially had in mind. Do not get hung up over an image selected for marketing purposes - you are what you make of yourself.
