This is where we disagree. Not everyone is going to be playing the market or going into gathering/crafting professions or even giving retainer ventures much time outside of just unlocking them because it's a blue-quest. The same amount of people that, for example, say they want or demand a garden plot to grow their own onions, only to use it once and then let it collect dust.
Apartments can (and often have) just been added more into the list. Once an apartment complex is full, SE just needs to click a button to make more apartment listings. Ward houses are a different ball-game, given the wards are always loaded, complete with who owns what house, what they have in their gardens, what colour / rotation it is, etc. etc. etc. Lots of data packets and even though people think adding more wards will fix the issue.. It won't. It'll only delay it. You need only look back at when we had a Ward expansion a few months ago (maybe a year or so now? I forget. Back when Ishgard Restoration started!) It didn't even take 48 hours before people were complaining about it not being enough. (On the higher-pop servers that is.)
Availability with Ward Housing will always be an issue because, the moment SE comes out and says "we've added more houses!" then plenty of people that have stopped playing the game will flock back, raising the playercount and returning to the old cycle of "not being enough". There's only so many wards they can add before the data-values crack in some fashion. It's just how coding is. Too much stress on a joint and it'll buckle. So, I propose thus.
Make player housing account-wide and actively decide to remove houses from those that have multiple homes on the same account. (Example being Account A having 3 houses on 3 separate characters.) They still keep ONE of their houses, yet the other two get vented back into the market. While that will certainly piss people off, since they got that house through legitimate channels, SE can easily knock that aside with "You're not following the spirit of the system we put in place" or something to that effect. It -is- their game and they can ultimately make these decisions. While pissing off the people that own many houses, the amount of people that will rally to their side with such a decision will far outweigh the negatives.
(Keep in mind, they could do the same with FCs. But with FC and its storage system, it may be more complicated. I do not expect this suggestion / proposal to be widely accepted, but to this point, drastic problems require drastic solutions.)
But as a company that thrives on its community LIKING them. They need to tread carefully. But that they should also wait until the current events are over and, in turn with that suggestion, find a better alternative to hidden timers and slap bots. Actively get out of their lazy chair and start clamping down on this sort of thing.
