To summarize my thoughts in as few words as possible: It's okay to have side content for Blue Mage, but Blue Mage itself should not be side content.
Honestly speaking, despite having already gotten all the spells, I'd still finding myself joining pretty much any BLU party that takes my fancy, logbook or not. I'm legitimately enjoying BLU this time around and while I do have some issues with BLU Tanks atm, it's still better than it was before. I've even convinced some FC mates to try out BLU this time around and so many of them are having a great time with it.
I used to be of a similar mind to those that want BLU as a normal job but I like the freedom of adapting my toolkit to suit my group's needs and I don't think I could ever really support that mentality anymore after actually getting to have some fun with the class as it currently is. Hopefully, we can get BLU to 70 sooner rather than wait another year for an update to it.
I'm more angry that I cant use my squadron still
Already dropped BLU since 3rd week of its release.....
It was amusing for a little bit. But after 5-6 days of work I already got every single spell and blu log entry + Masked Carnivale 26-30. There may be 62 entries in the log but the duties themselves go faster since reasons (lv 5 doom).
Haven't played it since.
I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it: I wish BLU was a job people could say they actually main.
To anyone who says "Oh just don't do it, problem solved." The argument is invalid. Imagine if say SMN was Limited and got this treatment, or to keep elemental weaknesses BLM got the same treatment, would you be OK leaving those jobs as is?
Or how about if a job you really enjoy got ruined in the next expansion. Should I tell you to suck it up, or just quit the job entirely? No, I pay for FFXIV, waiting ever so long as BLU is my most favourite job in the entire series and got this treatment. It was so bad, it almost made me quit, as it's what I been wanting most, see got delivered and now it made me want to go to FFXI for it.
To say just don't do it is an invalid argument.
We are not even asking for the limited/side content version of BLU to be removed just that a version able to play the full game is ADDED as one of the 6.0 expac jobs. Yoshi P told us to give our feedback about BLU and limited jobs after the update in this patch and it's done nothing to change my mind about wanting to do current content and the full game as any other combat job is able to.
Right now, I'm having fun with BLUE, collecting all the spells like they are pokemon, re-experimence old dungeons/raids with a whole new job and blasting everything with awesome primal-spells. But yeah, things will get old pretty fast I guess, like the first time the job was around. I'm having fun now but once I've cleared all the stages and collected all the spells, I don't know. Maybe I go for the mount if I find enough people to team up with me - which is my biggest concern right now: You may see enough people for collecting spells and running dungeons, but clearing saving contest with it is a whole other story.
Had to speed grind BLU to get to 60. It was getting ridiculous where Party Finder wanted Ather. Mimicry for lvl 50 content now. Had a T1 party break up because there were three people who didn't have it and we were just trying to get Devour. (On top of fighting over mechanics.)
PF parties are slow and steady at least, but I can see this dying after 5.2 launches and those who want the mount are out of luck.
Unless they decide to make a log for "limited" jobs instead of just BLU, otherwise it's going DOA if you're a latecomer... seems to be a theme for this game. I like the carnivale, I'd rather learn new spells from there instead of hoping for a dungeon/raid run. This patch did allow me to get all my ARR BLU spells that I missed because I was late to the party and no one did BLU anything until this patch.
I recommend joining some Discord groups if you want to do the Savage content. It's a lot less messier than putting up a PF and hoping that you get seven other people who have Aetherial Mimicry, the Raise, understanding of mechanics, and practice doing the content you're hoping to clear. I'm in four personally, so I could recommend you some if you want.
But yeah, I will agree, at present I'm down to only needing A4S, A8S, and A12S clears on BLU and then I'll have all of the achievements tied to the content. And then I guess I won't really touch it again for another year or so aside from when I want to get some Allied Seals for Teleport tickets or mess around with it a little bit? That feels like kind of a bummer, considering I do like what was added and hope that they continue making improvements to BLU over time. I just want something more than what's already here.
If they wanna keep blue mage itself limited here's a solution for both... make a "brand new" job type specifically for xiv, called Azure Guardian or knight idk. Lore wise just have the origins be while people liked learning to be blue mages many others wanted more practical use of the magic prompting them to create their own job or something idk.
I really wouldn't mind if blu was a regular job anyway. Can still have it learn skills too, just deny access to content until they got the required spells already which because of how expansions work that be better 1 spell or trait to learn per 2 lvls, and you can't say do the lv63 dungeon without learning the 62 skill/trait.
I am almost done with the BLU Log (only Ultima Eh, and Neverreap are left) and i can say it's been the most fun i've had in the game past month. Mhach raids were a blast, especially Dun Scaith.
Healer BLU is really fun, tank BLU needs some help, but it's passable.
Overall, i'd say it's been a success.
I'm near the completion of the feature... 3 carnivale fights to go for Angel Whisper, just a couple of spells missing and done most of the Log. There is the Morbol mount, but I don't foresee it in a near future, unless I manage to find an actual BLU static to join for the Alexander Savage fights.
My only concern with BLU's "endgame" is the lack of incentive to keep doing after you got all of the above and if you don't have an use for Allied Seals anymore:
- The Carnivale is fun (for the ones interested in the puzzle-like fights), but after you beat it once, it becomes kind of stale, due to the puzzle nature of the fights.
- The log is actually entertaining, but after you got seals and spells, there's little incentive on doing the dungeons again. I would join some of the Alliance Raids if I see forming groups for the glams, though.
- I've got to admit, the Morbol mount is a nice carrot-on-a-stick, and something for harcore BLUes to aim for. People are complaining on the difficulty, but SE has always given very hard content (aka Ultimates) that doesn't necessarily cater to everyone
So, said that, my suggestion on impoving the "endgame" experience as it is right now:
- Have a daily Log mark, not just weekly. And increase dramatically the Gil reward (maybe adding Phantasmagoria rewards too?). This would serve as the BLU "daily roulette" and keep people interested for the gil at least.
- Increase the gil reward from the weekly as well. If you get an Extreme or Savage fight, it's actually very challenging.
- Let us queue with other BLUs, or even solo, for PotD (and HoH in the future). The random nature of the rewards there would keep the replayability in check. TBH Deep Dungeons seems like the perfect excuse for a solo challenge.
- Increase the level cap to 70 before Shadowbringers end. If BLU is got to be stuck in 1 expansion back, at least let it be the one before... There are still useful things to do solo in SB, like hunting marks, etc.
- As of the suggestion above, let BLU join Map hunting parties. The fights inside the portals have always been a joke, so having a BLU in the mix wouldn't change a lot.
As for the functionality of the job per se, it is going towards a nice spot with Aetherial Mimicry, but it defnitely needs adjustments:
- Mimicry can be a pain sometimes to hunt for healers or tanks. While I enjoy the flavor of the spell, I have to admit that. Next content patch, let Martyn have the Blue Mage Guild actual office, and put there a healer and a tank "totem" so you can Mimicry from them, in case you don't find any other subjects running around.
- Angel Whisper having a recast time is terrible. Take it away, or at least reduce it to a 60s. 300 is way too much, since the self-destruct abilities leavea debuff now to deter people from using them repeatedly.
- Healers need a fast reactive healing spell like Tetragrammaton. Swiftcast is the only way to do that atm and it's not that reliable due to the long recast time.
- Tanks need better mitigation tools, period.
- Primal spells tailored for tanks or healers. They are basically the OGCDs of the job, but basically all of them just cater to the dps aspect of the job.
Is there a discord group for Aether? I've found a Primal and Crystal group on the reddit but can't find one for Aether.
It already can. I've tested it, and it can probably even solo Aquapolis, which in my books makes it one of my favorite Jobs in the game now. I've not been able to solidly solo Aquapolis since Stormblood rolled in and ruined Scholar (lost a lot of DoTs, old Cleric's Stance, Bane got nerfed into the ground, etc.), so recapturing that experience with Blue Mage has been phenomenal. Now if only they didn't lock Dragonskin maps behind the same 18h allowance as Zonureskin maps... Let me buy Dragonskin maps with Allied Seals and Blue Mage would have an absolutely solid niche, IMO. Although I'd really still prefer to see Allied Seals replaced with its own Blue Mage currency, not too keen on the idea of Lv70 Blue Mage rolling out and being able to buy all the new stuff instantly again because I've had Allied Seals capped for so long.
Whilst I think there's plenty of room for improvements, I'm having a blast. I hate Masked Carnivale and I was disappointed with the first iteration of Blue Mage.
But the group content and revitalised old content through Blue Mage parties, this, this is where I am having fun. My biggest concern is longevity of Blue Mage, I expect it'll be a job that'll become shelved again until something new comes out for it. Heck, maybe they could have trickled out the content for it like they do with patch cycles for stuff like Savage & 24 mans. Like this patch, we might only have First Coils, LotA & first Alex Savage and a reward for that. And then when we're nearing 6.0, roll out the Morbol mount (or a better mount if Morbol is used earlier) as a reward for completing all.
At least this is an option to trickle out the incentive of clearing BLU content rather than people grind it all in one go.
And I also have seen 2 main schools of thought
- People who want to be able to solo content with it.
- People who want to be able to group stuff.
This is understandable. SE referred to it as Solo content and in the same announcement, said people have to group up. So both expectations have been set. Plus, it's an MMO and people like doing stuff with other people. But an MMO with a reasonable amount of solo stuff too, so either is reasonable.
Although solo content is available through Masked Carnivale, I think Martyn should hook up with The Wandering Minstrel and give us proper soloable fights from content. It's all very well SE giving us OP jobs we can solo with, but it's not be too different from undersizing. But if they incorporated it into Masked Carnivale they'd be able to give tweaked versions of fights that work better with Blue Mage, particularly fights that require more than 1 person.
My current wishlist for improvements:
- Rewards that encourage persistence. Poetics are really easy to come by, Allied Seals will see their use gone once people have the rewards. People however, need level 80 currency to gear existing jobs too, so tagging level 80 currency in would help.
- New Duty Finder options for Limited Jobs. Perhaps even Limited Job Roulettes. Limited Dungeon Roulette, Limited Alliance Roulette, Limited Raid Roulette (Coil, Alex Savage, Alex Normal). If it's too many roulettes, let them share a timer with their non-limited versions.
- To make Duty Finder viable, they'd need to have a minimum requirement of specific skills learned. And Mimicry would need to be enforced, either by granting it at random in the roulette, or allow people to choose as they go in.
- More DPS spells that flow into each other. I guess just to feel better for DPS players.
- Less obnoxious Masked Carnivale, see my suggestions for it above. I don't mind a challenge or a gimmick, but many just feel obnoxious to do (they're not necessarily that hard either, I just don't enjoy them).
- Continue to embrace old content and push people to continue doing them synced and as BLU parties, because this was a good decision. I was wholly disappointed with the original BLU release when people just undersized and leeched and then complained about the lack of content. The content is there and it is good content, just the incentive wasn't there.
I have a dream that someday this game's dev team will stop making content that is dead on arrival and actually work on something substantial.
Unfortunately, that day is not today.
I think the necessity from a daily roulette could be partially sated if they gave daily (instead of weekly) Marks. This would make sure that you'd always find a bunch of BLU groups rolling something.... Of course for this to really work they'd need to buff the gil and the other rewards, like a previous poster said. Poetics can be obtained everywhere and Allied Seals lose their usefulness after a while. Maybe a daily log entry for dungeon, trial and raids, respectively... and the hard ones (Extreme, or Savage) being kept as the weekly, with godly rewards.
To my experience, the Blue Log party finder netted me roughly the same wait time of queueing as a regular dps for a roulette. If BLU got a roulette of its own, the wait times would be massive if there were no other BLU queueing as well, so it's just the same.
While I enjoy certain aspects of BLU, where they faltered is not making a DF for them, instead of making a glorified PF. I also know that new people to the game (either from Christmas sales or in the future when they fix the ARR quests) will probably never be able to do it with the rewards pretty much a "one and done" sort, and no one will be willing to help. I already had difficulty finding groups for me and a friend after we waited a week.
