They probably should have gone all in and recorded new full sets of combat voices. It sounds like my character has 2 different voices during combat now; I thought it was like Alisaie being louder than usual when I first heard them. (Was running the new dungeon.)
My elezen sounds fine, the new sounds are super quiet so I didn't even notice them until I specifically went to try and listen out for them on a striking dummy.
I can't hear any noise from my Viera when she's fighting but I hate all her new emote sounds now. I checked to see how all the other new Viera voices sound and their either mismatched or collectively just god awful.
I'm now convinced whomever is doing the voici ng and sound effects for this expansion does not know what they are doing or just doesn't care.
I worked my ass off to figure out the best voice for my Viera, too and they just RUIN IT all in one stupid update! D'X
Didn't notice them till I was messing about spamming stuff outside the FC house. I actually really like the new additions and I'm glad they didn't remove the original combat sounds either. It seems like I may have gotten lucky that the additional voices I got for mine seem to fit the character just fine although they're obviously a different VA.
They probably should have an option to disable additional combat voices since I can imagine this is going to screw with a lot of people.
Very quiet and could bearly hear them but I'm thankful for variety rather than hear the same loud combat voice over and over.
Had no idea about this until I saw this thread. Went in-game to check and the new voice sounds are so low I pretty much can't hear them. Had to turn off other sounds to check them out. They're not the worst thing in the world, but they don't match the old voice and they sound a little squeaky. I don't like them.
Also I'm pretty sure dance steps played battle cries before but now they don't. Don't know when that was changed or if it's just my imagination they were there before.
I didn’t really notice them honestly
Elezen female 11 got pretty neat additional battle voices, it was bad before but choosed it for beautiful laugh.
I am quite happy with the update, these new sounds are nice enough.
My male Hyur thankfully doesn't seem to be impacted too badly... I noticed an extra 'grunt' that wasn't there before, but other sounds are the same... but quieter.
I've only noticed one new sound in mine albeit very quiet. It's fine though, it's nice for some variety.
I tried to hear my new battle voice additions, which I was excited for b/c her 2 battle yells sound extremely similar. To my dismay, I could not tell any difference. I use voice 1 on Veena Viera. Still enjoy her regular voice though :)
EDIT: I -think- I heard a little grunt with my sound turned up pretty loud and no music. The grunt did sound a little low, but reasonable. I guess the only negative is since this very low grunt in my character's voice rotation, it's made her much quieter since that slot of a battle voice is basically inaudible. Still, hearing the same HYUP! and HUP! over and over again might be nice to be a little quieter ;)
I was playing a bit last night and thought my character's voice sounded a bit off. Didnt realize it was new combat voices. Not saying its a good or bad thing for me, just didnt expect this. Now I gotta go home and really listen in on this.
Is it particularly for melee based jobs? IIRC casters didnt really have combat voices, and ranged was somewhat limited? Could be misremembering this though.
Casters don’t make combat sounds (I guess we’re all non-verbal spellcasters in this game). Tanks and melee aren’t as loud as the physical ranged are, though. I tested out the new sounds on both a melee DPS and a physical ranged on a Striking Dummy, and the noises were very apparent on both BRD and DNC (though, DNC steps don’t make a sound any more when you use them like they did before).
It’s only really jarring to hear the two sounds that are about an octave or more higher than my character’s default voice. They sound louder than all the rest—and it’s quite annoying to hear her randomly going NYAH! NYAH! during combat when she never made a sound like that before. Her default sounds are definitely less frequent in usage—instead I get the annoying new sound described here more often than not.
I'm actually quite happy with mine.
I think I'm male elezen voice 2? It's a nasally one, and the additional voices seem to compliment it well enough that they don't seem out of place or anything.
I'm happy with my male miqo's too but I can't recall his voice... I want to say 10 or 11 but I don't know.
The Crystal Exarch's is... unfortunate. Quack Quack.
Just tested it by smacking a few mobs.
I have the "mature" Miqo'te voice and the new sounds fit in nicely. They are pretty quiet though, oftentimes getting drowned out by weapon noises.
Oh well, if it were up to me Ifalna wouldn't battle yelp at all. That's why I love playing casters. They are focused, silent and deadly. :P
Certainly much much better than my Draenei fared when WoW added new sounds. ... She has a split personality now. >.<
Viera voice 9 sounds really good, I gotta say.
If they're going to make changes to our characters without asking us, they should at least give us a Fantasia for free so we don't have to pay them for the privilege of them screwing up our characters.
I'm using voice 3 on my cat (the Yukari Tamura one), and the new grunt sounds like it's from her as well. So I can't complain about this addition.

i made a quick video just demonstrating the huge difference here (no visual because i have really bad fps) because why not
i'd honestly advise using the in game feedback as well at this point because i do not want to settle for this laziness im forced to listen to. at least with gunbreaker, i'm not forced to play it
This is one of those things that really bothers me. I use miqo voice 1 and the new voices don't sound ANYTHING at all like her normal voice. I want them gone or redone tbh. It's like a different VA did the new voice. Either there should be an option or they should revert it, imo.
Okay people...You're only noticing these things because they're new, and because they're new, they feel out of place simply by virtue of them not being there before, regardless as to if they work or not.
You'll get used to them in a few weeks or months, and you'll never notice the difference.
You gotta remember that people make weird sounds under stress. Even the burliest man with the deepest of voices might make a high pitched squeak if he had to swing a big lug of metal around all the time without even enough time in between to breathe, so i dont think its really all that unreasonable that the new voices sound slightly different.
Personally? Its a good thing for me...I think im using voice...12? 12? 11? One of the higher numbered ones, with a low pitch, i forget...whatever doesnt matter...But before patch day i'd only ever hear ONE battle sound coming out of her mouth, it got a bit robotic, this change is good for that even if it is a tiny bit off.
I'm enjoying the added battle voices. Now my Viera doesn't sound like she's on a hyperactive warpath the entire time. The added variety is great and it is sounding great on my friend's characters as well.
I'm listening to your video now and the new voice clips do not sound out of place to my ears.
My character did get a few new lines but they were small quiet grunting if anything. I do like them because the voice clips he has originay were loud yelling, and that gave it a good balance.
I tested it on my alts too, and one out of 5 did have new voice clips that sounded too different from his original one, but I actually prefer the new one better lol.
Anyway, so far though I think some of the new voice clips actually fit their voices. Some people are maybe misinterpreting different delivery in the acting from having a different voice entirely, but idk.
the voice actor is entirely different. it sounds like a poor attempted imitation to match the original and it does not work and it's quite frankly irritating to now constantly listen to a voice play on my character that i did not choose. if i wanted my character to sound entirely different then i would have chosen something else. and the more i listen to it the more annoying it gets, they play at such a higher frequency than the old ones that it may as well have been considered a replacement at this point. there's no consistency here
For me personally, once I notice a stark difference in something that I’ve been exposed to on a near daily basis for an extended period of time, I cannot unnotice it, no matter how much time has passed. My character making a NYAH squawk randomly during combat that she never made before won’t be something that I “get used to”.
Unfortunately, none of the other Miqo’te voices have ever appealed to me. So changing it isn’t an option. I honestly wish they’d just added a few new voices as options rather than sticking sounds in existing voices that people may not appreciate. Messing too much with established characters is very iffy because, sure: you will have some who like it, some who are neutral, some who don’t even notice...but you’ll also get those that don’t appreciate the changes made with little to no forewarning.
I have nothing against more variety. But I don’t think adding said variety to existing assets like this is the best way to go about adding it. All of my friends that I’ve asked about their new sounds don’t like them, because they say their characters sound odd or “out of place”. My BFF who plays a female Midlande (Voice 5, I believe) says one noise is way too high-pitched for their character, whom they always imagined with a lower voice as opposed to higher.
To each their own, but I would have preferred the voice variety not be added this way. Not even sure what prompted the idea that they needed to change in the first place, if I’m being honest.
Or maybe they're just bad. Or are we supposed to get used to things like this as well?

God I regret looking that up and playing it to make sure it's the right one.
Imo they still need to add some of the most basic functions in this mmo. One of which being in character customization, a button that let's you test what your character sounds like when attacking.... Aion did this. They put a set of skills that your char displayed an animation of, and each one used the voice you set your character to use. It was a good way to hear what you'd be hearing 99% of your gameplay. Personally though, I like my char's added grunt, it breaks up the pattern when you hear the same grunt 3 times in a row.
My voice was incredibly subdued in combat, if ever heard at all since it was a silent type (Voice 3 male Elezen, pretty sure it's tied to all vanilla races, if not on Au Ra. The voice took me by surprise, but it's something I never knew I wanted til I heard it. No voice clips on the bigger attacks was something I thought was pretty neat as a 'rule of cool' deal, but they did a great job with that one in particular. I think the only thing I would change is to make it 50/50 between no voice or the new voice clip being played.
Some of us know our characters voices very well after playing with them for half a decade. Suddenly adding voices to then that does not fit is VERY noticeable. My characters new voices are completely out of character and it's pulling me out of the experience. I'm conviced the voice actors are different and that's the primary issue. The newer races probably are fine because they use the same VAs most likely but the older ones are probably not working for SE anymore.
I've been playing with the sound off since I'm not doing anything new lately. Hm, will have to see once I get back into ShB with the husband.
Tbh, my character has always sounded all over with his VA. Some of his emotes are proper and masculine, others like /surprised sound like he just got kicked in the groin and hit puberty... meanwhile his battle voice doesn't even sound like his emote voice. VA's are hit and miss when it comes to this; overall though, it sounds like to everyone's displeasure that the sound development team is on a roll with screwing things up like GNB's SFX and supposedly this for people.
I haven't noticed anything with voice 3 miqo'te :x
I don't hear any noticeable difference on my main, Miqo'te #11. It could just be I'm oblivious to it but I've played her for several years so, I don't know, maybe she didn't get much new or it's very quiet.
They really added random voices to the current combat voices? I haven't noticed anything on my au ra, and I don't remember what my alt sounded like, I never played it. Must be pretty jarring. Why not just add new voices to choose from, or not do this at all? Really pointless, in my opinion.
I haven't noticed anything new with Female Miqo'te voice 7. Are there specific abilities that trigger new sounds?
I actually like the new combat sounds better on my Miqo'te (voice 2), I just don't like them being mixed in with the old ones, since the new voice have a slightly different pitch.
You were indeed right that this was mentioned in the patch notes:

The idea appealed to me and I was looking forward to this change, knowing SE's eye for quality. But for this addition, I registered to these forums specifically to add my voice.
The added combat sounds do not seem to fit my character (voice 4), whom I've grown to love over the two years and thousands of hours I've spent playing with her. Like you, I get the feeling that the added combat sounds were done by a completely different voice actor, and I frankly find it off-putting.
My first reaction was to double check that I wasn't making up things, my second reaction was to find the option that lets me choose to return to the old situation... which regrettably I've been unable to find :(
Considering that our characters are our one single character with which we can become anything, a change like this is actually quite major. I'm not saying to remove the changes, it'd be great if they could update the existing changes for the voices where there really is a large discrepancy between original and new.
But above all, I urge the developers to provide an option to freely switch between the original combat sounds and the added new ones.
Their eye for quality is the real deal. Their ear for music is top-notch! Their ear for combat sounds... is a work in progress :)
