Basically, there's not many outfits for male characters this time around because Crystal Exarch's is nothing to write home about and both Thancred and Urianger use job gear, if modified a tad bit. Nice.

They release Krile's outfit and it's genderlocked. I mean I know this is the norm for npc sets being genderlocked to only the npc's own gender but still I wanna dress like Krile but don't dress like female characters maybe I'll buy it for my retainer... but is it worth it?
Maybe... just maybe.
If I remember correctly, the NPC outfits are released by player demand and will always be locked to the sex of the original character. They don't craft those special outfits for anything but the model they're intended for. Hien's outfit I remember having a high demand to be made gender neutral but was denied.
The norm for npc outfits generally goes:
Is locked to the npc sex
Is not dyeable
Early on, they were a singular item, then released in pieces with the hairstyle for the heavensward sets. I actually thought that the hairstyles coming with the outfits were pretty cool. Aymerics hairstyle can be used by female characters despite the outfit itself being male only.
Kriles outfit having its hair tied to the hood is weird. It suggests that they never designed her without the hood on though I swore we saw it come off before. Why not have it be a separate hairstyle you equip at the aesthetician like they've done in the past? Is it because Hrothgar and Viera can't use them? It's dyeable which is cool but still feels like an odd decision.
Did people really expect anything but? There is not a single scion outfit that isn't on top of being undyable. That's how it is, all the time.
That would just be the Manderville set you get from completing ARR's. The outfit Nashu wears. Unless you meant specifically the blown up version, to which would be neat if we got a 5.0 Hildi in which Nashu becomes a mess.
Oh my god don't they have full hairstyle on her character model?? I so wanted a new hairstyle
I know prettymuch all character outfits are destined for Mog Station sooner or later, but I feel weird about putting really unique outfits like the Exarch's robes on there. It seems like something that should be special for the character, not something that - for someone starting the game later - you've seen worn by umpteen random cosplayers (half of them being walking spoilers) on the way there.
In the case of every other FFXIV character outfit, we can't dye any of it.
I suspect the hair is a workaround to the usual issue of hoods like that design requiring the character's hair to be completely hidden so it doesn't clip through the hood.
And/or it's how they programmed it for Krile in the first place.
(On the upside... this seems like a sign they could give us equippable wigs as headgear to allow for changing hairstyles quickly.... though it may depend how much 'hair physics' Krile's hair has. I haven't given it any thought before now.)
Definitely hard to find options. It doesn't help that two of the three male Scions got repurposed relic gear for their new outfits this time around. (And Alphinaud got leveling gear, not that it stopped them from selling the ARR Scions' outfits like that, but he'd be balanced with Alisaie if they ever got added.)
Cid's second outfit would be a good option actually, since the first one is an "all in one" costume so it's not very useful. Include the goggles again in his second outfit, and it might be a lot more popular.
Nero's first outfit is a recolour of the Alchemist's Coat which is pretty popular and already modeled for all races, so it might work even if people don't like the character that much?
G'raha's outfit is also made from pre-existing gear pieces with a unique colour scheme - a common crafter's vest and gloves/boots that are used for a few different pieces. (It would add the 'Scion aether goggles' to the vest, though, and could potentially include his shoulder tattoo.) Again, they could probably set it up without too much effort since the main pieces are already modeled for all races.
I think I've seen people ask for Asahi's outfit before, actually. It's a fancy recoloured version of the Garlean armour we acquire during Stormblood.
Zenos is less likely, because he's a unique model rather than an NPC so they'd have to do more work to adapt it.
(On the other hand, Emet-Selch is programmed as an NPC with an Elezen base model so there's more chance of getting his outfit than Zenos.)
I don't think we've seen her without her hood up. It would make sense if they never modeled it as a proper hairstyle - why design something that won't ever be seen?
^
Hildabrand's torn outfit should have been an ingame reward just like the in-town we got way back in ARR. I found that just being SE trying to make a cheap buck off of Hildabrand's popularity. I mean, it's so obvious it hurts my eyes just remembering. :/
Krile's hood attached to the character's head like a hairstyle...stupidest decision I have ever seen in this game, period. They should have just made it change your hairstyle when you put it on instead.
Isn't that exactly what it does? You put it on, and now you have her hairstyle.
If it actually changed your hairstyle but only when the hood was equipped, then changed back when you took it off, how would that be any different to attaching it to the hood itself? (Other than being a lot more complicated at a programming level, if it was achievable at all.)
See that would hold weight if not for
-Minifilia'a word of the mother outfit
-Thancred's HW outfit
-Y'shtola's HW outfit and eventually ShB outfit
-Lyse SB outfit(the one she uses pre spar session on the hand)
Which spoil the ending of 2.55 with them being alive since they would have to be to change outfits, and then the SB ending with Y'shtola being alive, and Lyse being a thing so Exarch robes would be just as big a spoiler to people.
Those too, I guess - particularly Aymeric since it's (I assume) the uniform of the Lord Commander and not just his personal outfit.
Overall I guess it makes more sense to me that we can get a copy of something that might be "normal Eorzean fashion" that the other NPC happens to also wear, than if we can get an exact replica of an otherworldly mage's robes long before our character actually goes there. (Plus, spoilers. Though I don't know if it's even worth fighting them regarding that particular character...)
By the same logic, I was very surprised from a story perspective that they chose to make Minfilia's "aetherial gown of light" costume available to players, though obviously there are other factors there.
I do think it was odd that Minfilia's outfit was added (which is why I'm resigned to the fact that the Exarch will probably be too) but I'm not keen for the same reasons.
Old spoilers but tagging anyway...I don't think it's that big a spoiler that major characters survived a "cliffhanger situation with no sign of a body" situation. Additionally they worked around the spoiler of showing Thancred with an eyepatch by giving us that separately as a quest reward.
"Lyse being a thing" in itself is not a spoiler if you don't realise who she is. I joined when Stormblood was current and just assumed she was a new character we'd meet later.
Then again, her outfit itself might be a giveaway if people studied it and made some conclusions compared to Yda... but I'm pretty sure most people just wear the shirt which is unique to her SB design.
Oh hey! I just assumed viera wouldn't show the hood. This is great news....No it's not that's horrible!
C'mon guys just make the ears hidden!
My theory is and I have seen this in other games that the model and clothing of some NPCs are "attached" for lack of knowing a better word. They are all part of the same model. Or some parts. For example exarchs's hood may be one hood and head as one piece. If I'm right that would explain why some outfits will never be available.
I'd like to see the hood on a viera with large floppy ears please. :)
As a male Lala with a cute aesthetic, the gender-lock makes me really sad and disappointed. My Character has the exact same body as a female Lala, why can't I wear it? ; ; I wish the dev team would go the extra mile for once instead of making half the player base cry. T_T
I would have rather the ears replaced the cat ears or vice versa.
The outfit is cute but I wish the hair was separate tbh. And the costume dyable. Kinda wish they would remove the gender lock on all the mog station items and make them Dyable. (The original Scion gear is just edited leveling gear...)
Most likely because all NPC outfits are genderlocked (it has "fun" side effect with Aymeric set, where haircut is unisex, and suit is a trash for female characters).
The most disappointing part in it that it's like...uhm, how to even put it. They provide something to the community, but only to one part of it - male or female based on what set it is. That's a bit meh. Either do sets unlocked please, or at least provide them in tandems, where one is for males and one is for females, how it usually works for Korean/Chinese sets.
Give me: Emet Selch gear, Exarch, standard Ascian costume (seriously, why don't we have this already?), Gaius armor (they'll probably do his current look tho) or if you really love us, Zenos armor. While i cant wait for y'shtola, I'd rather have yotsuyu's outfit. Did they ever release the twins' outfits?
People expected it because the devout class in past games were unisex.

It was a beautiful dream while it lasted.
I'm getting more and more disheartened seeing more gender locks on outfits. I loved joining an mmo and seeing men wear the same skimpy gear I had to wear. But male characters are given less and less options it seems. and it kinda sucks.
I dunno i personally see this as lazy on their part if anything. I love ffxiv so please understand where im coming from but most of the scion attire in the past came with hairstyles i.e Minfillia, Thancred, and Y'shtola. For some reason tho this one just sort of comes out as awkward and lazy. Obviously the item was scaled to fit other races but in viera's case the ears just simply clip out. I have seen older gear for even miqot's (i dont remember the item name but it simply had holes for the ears to pop out of from. Also the hair should have been seperate from the outfit itself instead of being on the hood. I personally feel like this items is a missed oppurtunity for Viera's to get a new hairstyle, imo.
The best thing about the outfit is that the hair is tied to the hood. Finally a real hood without that cloth underneath wich covers the head and actual hair is sticking out instead. I have wanted this since I have seen Kriles hood the first time. Too bad the outfit is not dyeable...
Has someone a picture with a Miqo'te wearing the hood? Are there "double ears" or not? Sadly the picture on the mogstation didn't show catgirls.
That is a catgirl https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodes...da16396062adb9
Oh, indeed. Thank you. So no double-ears. Well, now I'm tempted...
Oh dear. I'm not sure how this even passed through the team.
This should be fixed, with haste, or alter it for the poor bunnies.
Either A. Hide ears or B. make the hood bunnie made.
1. I was hoping the hair would be separated...
2. Don't see why this is genderlocked at all honestly. It's similiar
to what is in game or at least give us a male alternative like Riku's
post with the Devout picture from FF3. This is really lazy...
Ah yes. The counterpart would be a similar outfit, but the blue skirt would be a pair of jeans for some reason.
Jokes aside, I wish they had implemented Krile's hairstyle as a separate thing. I recall an image or two of her hairstyle in one of the artbooks. Would've appreciated them at least model the damn thing, as opposed to "meh, it's stuck to the hood in the OG model so make it the same in the mogstation model.
....Why not just a Completely different outfit thats Viera Friendly?
Did everybody seriously expect the outfit to have an altered version for the Viera or even be Bunny friendly? This is Krile's outfit, pure cosplay scaled up to now fit Non-Lalafell characters.
If you want tall Bunny ears to fit on a hooded outfit with cat ears, then we should get a new original outfit. Not Krile's outfit.
The only excuses I can make for them, being that I have experience in 3D modeling, is that retrofitting a mesh onto a skeleton takes a lot of time, but you don't need a whole freaking team to do this, just one person. The ears(viera) are obviously separate from the head, but from their perspective it'd probably be immersion breaking to remove the ears entirely for the hood. This begs the question seen in the above post. That requires altering the mesh(adding ear sleeves), and I think from Yoshida's PoV, it would deviate too much from the original design.
Still, you don't need 100 people to do this(low time and staff strain would likely be the excuse given). Make changes to a mesh for a specific race one time.
Honestly if they are gonna gender lock things then could they try and release an male npc outfit with a female one. Coulda gave us Alphinaud's outfit from ANY expansion so us males got some love, too.
