I wasn't feeling any REAL urgency until this week rolled around and they've still posted nothing. Square, what the heck? There's only 3 days left until Early Access maintenance and you're giving nothing but radio silence! What's the deal?!
Guys, you have only to check out the original Race Naming Convention post to see around when they're releasing that information.
Check it out: all 1.0 and ARR races had their naming conventions released around a week before Early Access began (August 21st, 2013; ARR Early Access started August 27th of the same year). That's mainly because they were already in the game back then, just never really had clarification about their names.
The Au Ra, on the other hand, had their posts released June 18th 2015, immediately a day before Heavensward's Early Access (June 19th of the same year).
They're likely going to do the same to Viera and Hrothgar, releasing it a day before or during the maintenance to Patch 5.0 (06/26, 06/27).
The conventions are also likely going to be released on the original post like they did Au Ra, so pay attention to it. 6 or 7 replies means Viera and Hrothgar naming conventions were released.
So, just chill.
Doesnt bother me if i wait, name changing isnt going anywhere :nompopcorn:
It'd be nice to get them a little earlier than last minute though, I'd love to have some time to think about and change it before starting the story.
Be that as it may, it'd be nice if the community managers on this game actually acted like community managers. I GET that there's a difficult barrier between the Japanese and US offices and what can be revealed freely but there has got to be better communication than this. It might be how Japanese companies do things but Square's lack of transparency outside of Live Letter streams is insane... Even if they'd just come out and say "Peace y'all, it's coming the day before maint." Awesome.
Yeah, something would be nice at this point. I gave the Au'ra a pass because of how difficult it was to explain eastern naming to a western audience. But c'mon! Both the new races seem to have a variation of northern european names. Scandinavian, Norse, etc. It can't be THAT hard to say "Oh by the way, Norse names for the rabbits, Scandinavian names for the lions.
I personally would appreciate a chance to get my alt set up before early access and without having to pay for a name change when I get it wrong.
My problem is when I get paid. I'm almost out of money and I may have to wait a week or two to name change if this doesn't get released soon.
I've been waiting eagerly for the naming conventions, but honestly if they do wind up releasing them DURING maintenance it gives me something to do.
idk about the EU, but I'm pretty sure a decent handful of people from NA wouldn't be able to tell you the difference. Most people I know of don't know any differences besides British Isles (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Ireland), Vikingland (Norway, Finland, Sweden), and Mainland Europe...
Exactly. I would really like to be able to get my name changes now, since my two characters who are going to become Viera already exist in game. Having to do it during early access, with potential server instability and long queues to log in, feels like an unnecessary headache.
I would really like them before Maint, because that means I can name change without having to deal with losing access to my character until congestion blows over - because whenever you try to name change when the queue is over an arbitrary amount, the game won't let you name change, and you can't log in until you do.
It's less urgent for me because I'm not planning on changing races, but I am feeling more and more antsy by the day, simply because it's New Lore and I want more.
Also the completely different naming conventions for the First, but I understand if they're leaving that for expansion release proper.
It's bad that no statement comes from official sources. A little "We didn't forget you. Infos will come soon" would have been nice. Less then 72 hours to satisfy our need... ;)
No, but players blaspheme outside the forum about the inadequate release of information.
Show me a link, please.
The thread that says Sticky: Race Naming Conventions on the top of the Lore page. If you check the number of replies to the naming conventions thread (which is currently at 5) and wait for them to show 6 or 7, you’ll know the naming conventions for Viera and Hrothgar have been added.
And I agree with most everyone here... This wait is becoming quite infuriating.
If the Au Ra and Heavensward are any indication, we might see the naming conventions drop as late as Thursday, the day before Early Access, since that's when they dropped the last time they added a race. Still, it's a bummer they're waiting so long.
If they haven't forgotten entirely about this.
Ah! Thanks, Nariya!
I misunderstood Elexander. I thougt he wanted to say that 6 to 7 replies with such a content were existing.
So uh, this is getting pretty uncomfortably worrisome... <_<
What a headache! I've never tried to fantasia or name change during a new expansion release before. This is good to know, although it's really frustrating.
Honestly, by waiting this long to release such vital information for new race character creation, I think the devs are being really discourteous.
As stated by others previously, the au ra naming conventions came out during the maintenance the day before early release for Heavensward and I don’t see how this will be any different or why SE NEEDS to tell us beforehand when it is coming out.
If there’s nothing by the time the servers are live then we can break out the torches and pitchforks, but until then we should just be patient.
Are people really this big of apologists over literally anything? "It's an unfair advantage for name securing" are you serious. The fact this game uses both first and last names should seriously render this issue completely moot. Even with xaela it's only an issue because Tribal names and Mongolian names are both such short lists.
"Fairness in naming matters?" I'm confused how fairness comes into it?
And the people who are saying we don't need to know before the patch, have you read some of the earlier posts? Some of us have existing characters we want to name change. Trying to do so within the first few days of early access, or possibly even within the first week, could end up locking us out of our characters. Considering how hyped some of us are for the new races, that's a while to wait before we get to enjoy that aspect of the expansion. So there's actually a legitimate reason why some of us want to know the conventions before the servers go down for maint.
There are several legitimate reasons to want the naming conventions you know, BEFORE, maintenance. Naming fairness has nothing to do with it. Literally the ONLY time I was unable to pick a name was because I wanted to play around with the idea of a Roe named River Song, and the name had been taken. If you're sticking to lore style names then the fact we have a first and last name makes the idea of someone stealing a name absurd.
What's going to be unfair is the congestion the people who really a super hyped about it are going to experience as everyone not only scrambles to race change, but name change, AND log in all at the same time. I feel for those changing their mains for that reason. Really I do. I only want to create an alt and get her reasonably ready while the Monk lvl boost is on sale as I'm pretty sure that will end with maint, and I'M getting antsy about it.
So yeah, Square needs to light a fire under the chair of the guy in charge of this. I know it's not exactly a minor thing but c'mon... you've had literal years to develop the lore by now. Sorting out the naming conventions and getting them to us in a timely manner should not be so difficult.
You don't need to fantasia / change your name on launch day.
The devs need to allocate every resource and time to tackle potential last minute trouble to enable a smooth launch.
Not trying to throw oil on the fire but I guess in boils down to this. Priorities. And you still have tomorrow which would be the logical timing based on Heavensward :).
(The Lore forum is a peaceful haven in these troubled times of entitled players salting around all over the forum, let's keep calm here too haha)
Except I'm fairly certain the lore team isn't on bug fix duty. This is something they would have completed early on in the lore development so that NPCs can be named to the conventions(or purposely not). There isn't much I can think of that should cause any changes to such a basic component of the lore.
The simplest fixed, based on comments in this thread, would have been to add a post to the naming conventions thread with the headers for Hrothgar and Viera to show that it will be added. That wouldn't stop all of the comments, but it would at least give something tangible for the community to point to.
^ I'll second that. (Though I would like to get my alts name change figured out soon =) )
I'm personally amazed by the amount of people who, like me, want to make sure they have lore-appropriate names. :O I thought I was in the minority!
Viera: Daenerys Lanister (or equivalent)
Hrothgar: Tyrion Targaryen (or equivalent)
Lore-approved!
Just to play the devil's advocate here, but would being able to know the naming conventions before 5.0 be that terrible? I mean, everyone has access to the game already, and names are not limited to races or expansions. So everyone would be on the same ground if they wanted to change their name. I really don't see the issue, unless anyone is talking about people not playing currently, or new characters. But in that case it would also be "unfair" for any other player that starts playing in two days, a week, a month, or whatever.
That being said, they'll be released tomorrow, during the downtime. I've always been 99% sure, because of what they did with Au Ra. And, to be honest, I personally don't care. There's no rush.
P.S.: Can I pick xXxSephicloudxXx Lionthilly? Wait, I'm sure that someone used that one already. Damn...
Greetings, everyone.
Thanks for your patience while we checked into this for you.
Unfortunately, we won't be able to release the naming conventions ahead of early access and launch of Shadowbringers. Once things have calmed down post-launch, the team will be able to better dedicate time to creating them. We know it's not the news you wanted to hear, but we appreciate your understanding.
Thank you for the update!
I guess in the meantime the best thing we can do is use the auto name generator to make educated guesses.
