My original name was Auron Nightwing. Not very clever, but it's my favorite FF character and my favorite DC hero. But then my friends started calling me Auron Vale because of my rare love of Aurum Vale. Couldn't pass up the opportunity to make it my permanent name. Never going back! :D
This is awesome :D So many interesting and fun stories and thoughts behind all the names.
It's great!
I really like the evolution of your name. :)
Your name's backround is awesome
And ROUTA says "Hi!" to TARHA :D I thought you might be a Finnish FC when I saw your FC name on someone once! You've got a cool name as well :D I understand the low profile part, it really didn't occur to me at all (for some strange reason) when I made my character and the first time someone shouted "Terve!" to me, I was a little confused  Silly, I know.
I heartily agree with this reasoning :D
I understand your feelings. I thought about making this post a good while since it is personal stuff, but in the end I thought that nobody has to answer my (possibly intrusive ) questions so I made the post. And I'm glad you chose to answer, all of your names have so interesting backgrounds (yes, I read them all) :)
Suits well with the Keepers I think :) Is it just a coincidence that your cat's name is Kissa? Or did you choose it on purpose, since kissa is a cat in Finnish? :D
I have been using Atlas for a very long time named after the Mech from Mechwarrior/Battletech. Pretty much all my usernames since I was a kid have been Atlas. If I am naming a character I'll use Atlas for males and Atlyss for female characters. I don't think I will ever change this in any game.
The Sol name was just something I thought up recently cause it sounded cool. Not many games had last names so this actually started in FF14.
Aoi is the japanese word for blue. My favorite colour
Fukuhara was just my first thought which came to me.
I am very much into astrology, so I decided to name my character after a constellation that reflects my character's duality. Her feminine nature is represented by our healers, especially WHM. Nurturing, a pacifist, in tune with the elements, aspires to be beautiful and kind towards others. She is the light. Her masculine nature is represented by our tanks, especially DRK. Aggressive, a provider, a builder, enjoys combat and aspires to deliver steel justice to the corrupt. He is the dark. Since I ultimately decided to go with a female avatar I suffixed her name with an 'a' instead of an 'i', and named her Gemina.
Her surname is total lore-based, but not original. I won't get into the lore here, but those interested can read my blog here: https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodes.../blog/4021281/
The really short version is it was given to her by her adoptive father and Hraesvelgr upon discovering that Lunarian blood runs through her veins. As most people know, Luna is Latin for the celestial body we know as the moon. Lunarians are humanoids that play a integral role in my favorite Final Fantasy game to this day: FFIV
I named my main character after my dog, Cupcake. I spent a week or so trying to come up with a first name. "Sprinkles" just seemed to flow the best, so I went with that. It was never my intention to name myself after the cupcakery...
Aria - From the manga "Aria" by Amano Kozue.
Fairchild - From the now defunct Fairchild Republic, the manufacturer of A-10 Thunderbolt.
Don't ask me how my brain combined these two completely opposite things: the peaceful utopia of Aria, and a weapon platform that mounts a rotary cannon capable of firing ~4000 rounds of depleted uraniumgoodnessshells per minute.
My bf invited me to the game, his character is a sea wolf Roe with Blue in his name, so I thought let's create a Red hellsguard. Rider came in because I wanted the second word to also start with R, also because I like Iskandar from the Fate/Zero anime, so Red Rider it was....apparently is also a song because I've had a few people throwing out references I'm completely oblivious to lol
My rl name.
I wont mention my original name, we dont speak about the dark times. But with my current name I wanted something a bit more lore appropriate. I liked playing a dunesfolk, but the naming convention was meh for my own personal name, especially since the first and last name are usually said together. I lucked out with lalafell lore stating the since the clans mix frequently the names arent set in stone (at least for males) and a dunes folk or plains folk could have the opposite name; like Pipin and Papalymo. So I used my knowledge of Japanese to find a name I liked and shared it with the guy who was helping me at the time. His only input was to drop the extra "mi" from my first name. So instead of it being written as Tokimi it's just Toki. I still use "lore" to say it's still Tokimi, but it sounds to much like a my sisters name/girls name so just call me Toki.
Plus I can now make all the time pins I want since Toki means time in Japanese.
And no I didnt get it from Metalocalypse.
All of my character names I've had since I've played FF11 or other games waaaaaaaaaay back in the day, or primarily DFO. Though I will admit having to come up with last names that fit them had me thinking for a while. Some were actual characters I had made, some were pet names I made up on the fly. DFO gave me a bit more flexibility with creative naming as you could only have a singular name to name your character/pets with after one of their updates.
My forum name I've had since my high school Spanish 4 days, as my real name really didn't have an actual translation over from French to Spanish, and the one my teacher gave me for the class didn't fit either.
In the order that I came up with them:
Aurelie Moonsong (female Midlander)
"Aurelie" was just a name I had in mind as something that would be cool to use for a character sometime. With more lore-knowledge it probably should be an Elezen name, but I'm going with the excuse that she's Gridanian and there's got to be some degree of crossover with naming ideas.
I think I just started throwing different words together to come up with a surname, but I'd very nearly settled on "Riversong" until I realised it would be taken as a Doctor Who reference. The actual intent was referencing a few different overlapping-in-my-mind things together, but most linkably the song "When the River Meets the Sea" and the closing poem of Alice Through the Looking-Glass.
(I had no idea the Moon would actually be somewhat important as a plot element, but in the end it's been a neat coincidence of Dalamud and summoner's association with Bahamut.)
Brynwyda Tidesong (female Sea Wolf)
Far too much time was spent re-re-reading the Roegadyn name dictionary trying to find a name that sounded nice, had a good meaning and didn't look dauntingly unpronouncable. Starting with the relatively limited choice for female name-endings, I picked "-wyda" (willow) as an association to her tank role via the Bole card.
In the end, her name means Spring Willow and I'm happy with that. No desire to go through the process again to work out her actual surname.
As with Moonsong, Tidesong started with throwing words together - loosely on a sea theme this time. I did want to find something else so they wouldn't have matching names, but I kept coming back to how those sounded together and decided to go with it. Moon and Tide. It seemed appropriate.
Sylviel Terrechant (male Duskwight)
I just ended up browsing NPC names this time, by looking up the NPC lists on Garland Tools in locations where there would be lots of Elezen. I wanted something that wasn't too long or reliant on French pronounciation (because I'm sure I'd mispronounce it), and preferably not found in the character creator. "Sylviel" ticked all those boxes.
And surnames - there was a pattern for them now. So "Earthsong" for Duskwights' links to caves, and then I thought I should maybe translate that into French (and hope I didn't mangle it)...
...and of all the luck, Terrechant is an actual Duskwight surname in the generator.
Haru Kazeuta (male Raen)
A race that uses real-world names? So much easier. Went browsing through this list for ideas. Haru has a few different meanings including "light", and I liked the sound of it.
Surname "Windsong" (for an easy-going 'travelling for fun' character) again possibly-mangled though online translation, and with no lore excuses this time. Hopefully the Japanese players aren't looking at it and thinking "yeah, you must a clueless English speaker who doesn't know how apply Japanese grammar to that"....
I just named mine after some characters I had written a long time ago. I tend to like names that are bit sing song-ish/rhyme like.
Awh, thank you. ^^ If at least one person enjoyed reading about them, then I’m glad I shared! I don’t dislike sharing, but sometimes I just wonder if others will understand things like why I chose the name I did, and/or why they mean so much to me. X3 As I said, I’m a bit of a nerd with names, and could spend forever just thinking up of the perfect name for a character.
I used to love playing a fighting game called bloody roar, the boxer woofman was my all time favorite. Though since his name was yugo, I thought Hugo would be more fitting. I used to main monk but I enjoyed tanking a lot more.
I've been using the name Fawkes online since 2000, when available. So that's what my FFXI character was named. I got the name from the sci-fi channel original series "The Invisible Man", which I'm fairly sure nobody else on earth liked. People usually thought it was because of the phoenix from Harry Potter or the V for Vendetta guy's mask, which would probably both be more respectable choices to have taken a name from.
In FFXIV I needed a last name, and I knew someone with the last name Macleod, and I liked the combination since it didn't feel like an overt direct reference to one thing, like maybe people would think I just like the Highlander. Also I think some people probably mispronounce it and don't get that it's Star Fox, I get a lot of mid-dungeon "Oh lol, I just got your name". Which is preferable to people constantly telling me to do a barrel roll.
Oraina was the name of my main character in WoW and I just hit random on the last name until I had something I could easily remember how to spell. Nothing too fancy or cool, I just grew to like the name.
Honestly I just come up with random names, no real rhyme or reason. Basically all I do is imagine what the character I want to make is like and let the name develop in my head organically. Guess it's years of RPing... The only time I ever followed a formula was playing LotRO where i wanted the name to fit the very specific lore... "Giltharan DarHalven", elf from Edhellond... I still love that name.
I usually choose my name according to things that inspires me, or that I like. I just recently changed my main's name (so it might not be uptaded on the forum!) from Mika Kusakari to Frida Nohansen.
"Mika" was one of my childhood's cat's name. Kusakari was just a random choice thought.
Frida is actually a name I heard in an old cartoon I used to watch as a kid, called Silverwings. I can't remember for the life of me if it was a movie ou a mini-series, but it was quite short, bit like Redwall if you know what that is. The story was about bats of different colors, belonging in colonies. The leader of the silver wings colony was called Frida, and I always thought it sounded elegant and stylish. I never let go of that name, so I decided to use it.
As for Nohansen, it is simply princess Zelda's surname -in the majority of the games if not all of them- and since it's my favorite game series of all time, I thought it would be a great idea to use it, since it sounded so nice with Frida :D
My elvaan in XI was "Ratle", which was the random combination of consonants and vowels my brain came up with at 3am, the alt-making hour.
When I decided I wanted to play elezen I wanted to give him a nod and keep "Rat", so Ratinel Leresaunt is that just fancied up a bit.
My account's name is referred to an old Square Enix games called Radiata Stories, specifically to the special move that the characters called which was in fact called Volty Blast.
On top of that when I started I saw that warriors used an axe and that hyurs could have pigtails: because of that combination I went with the name of the secondary protagonist, Ridley Silverlake, and I practically stayed that way for years until "reasons".
On the case for my lalafell is more of a slang between me and my sister: in our country, Pucha (written differently but pronounced the same) is actually the short version of a type of name however me and my sister say Pucha whenever we mean something is "above cute". So my sister, instead of calling my lalafell cute, she calls her "pucha" (she was called differently back then) and when I decided to go full Lalafell I took the slang and made it into the naming convention: Pupucha Pucha. It would've worked the other way around too with Puchacha Pucha, but people liked to call me Pupu for crappy reasons.
PS: my sister's lalafell is instead called Kakapo Kapo, after the well known ground parrot from New Zealand, the Kakapo. To this day I feel amazed by how she makes the silliest names with no effort.
Ehh mine isn't that interesting.
It was the name i chose for my character in D&D.
I just decided to reuse the name for my FF14 character.
I'm a writer. I often game instead of writing. My name is a self call out.
It started with an old RP character of mine from 18 years ago, a Drow named Khalith. "Khalith" is the Drow word for "courage." It's been a favorite of mine for years and been something I've stuck with forever. As for "Mateo" it just means "Matthew" in Spanish which is a shout out to my Latino roots and "Mateo" means something along the lines of "favored by god" and since I main Paladins, it made sense since Paladins are traditionally holy knights of some deity or another.
It's a play on the Holy Sword Excalibur.
Caliburn = the alternative name for the blade
Cross = X
X-Caliburn. Excalibur.
When I first made my character i didn't know anything about Miqo'te naming conventions or anything but i noticed the ' in the race name and thought that they would probably use that a lot in their actual names. Why i chose Khi'ra Djo'qet is simply because it is the first name that came to my head. I also tend to name my retainers with the same conversation as well even though they aren't miqo'tes.
Been thinking of changing my name and have a first name I like but no last name at the moment so I ain't changing yet.
Personally, Samniel is a made-up name that's meant to be a fantasy-sounding gender-neutral point between Samuel and Samantha, the -el suffix is angelic. Atkascha is from Final Fantasy Tactics, so it's meant to reflect a royal/noble-natured individual.
Ranmaru Stormcaller was back when I was hoping we'd get a Ramuh-egi or at least egi glamours, so it was meant to be a fancy sounding epithet for a Raen Summoner. The first name is a reference to Mori Ranmaru, Nobunaga's page/male lover.
Johannes Lenneth is... longer lol Johannes is the German version of the latin Ioannes, a reference to St. John the Baptist, and one of my characters is from the town of Lenneth (itself a reference to Valkyrie Profile, since changed because I fear SE's lawyers lol), hence he was normally referred to as the son of (Mother's Name) of Lenneth, shortened to (First Name) Lenneth.
As another writer with the same problem, I feel called out :D
Usually, whenever I go into an MMO or any other game that allows me to customize the name and appearance of a character, I fall back on prior role-play characters that I've used beforehand from role-playing campaigns that are run through IRC. I've been in a long-standing campaign with two friends for at least...11 years with over 30+ PC's/NPC's that I've had to micromanage since it's just us three together. I've had to get plenty creative in order to make sure that one PC or NPC doesn't necessarily blend into each other, whether by personality, appearance, or skills.
The first name, "Soma" is the first name of one of my more important and well-developed PC's. It's actually a Sanskrit and Indian male name, but in both of my characters using the name they are actually female. Personally, I think the name could be unisex honestly as it carries a masculine tone and a feminine one at the same time due to the "-a" at the end and the way it is pronounced, "So-muh".
In Sanskirt and Indian, the name means "nectar of immortality". In other languages, it can mean different things. In other forms, it can also mean "moon" or "moonlight". In other parts of the word's etymology, especially on the Hindu side, the name Soma is also the name of their moon god or a god similar towards the Roman's version of their wine god, Bacchus, bringer of wealth and good health. In both of my character's cases, I went and played with the meanings concerning moon and immortality. In both of my character's cases, they had white hair...which can be associated with the moon and though the first using the name was actually immortal, I think it's safe too say that the WoL may as well be too at this point. The use of relying on the darker skin of a Moonkeeper also plays heavily into the first name where I wanted my character to reflect her name and keep this exotic sort of feel about her. And come on, playing as a Moonkeeper was an obvious choice in the matter. :p
The surname is "Kagami" which is the Japanese word for "Mirror". The Japanese surname actually has nothing to do with the role-play character and this was just something that I wanted to use specifically for my XIV character. It rolled off the tongue better when combined with the Indian name, so we get "So-muh Kah-gah-mee". It's kind of challenging to take one name from one culture/region and pair it with another where they both pronounce things differently. Altogether, the name can be translated into "Moonlight Mirror" or "Mirror of Immortality", etc. It can be taken in various ways, but they're all lead up towards the same place.
The first character called Soma was heavily affiliated with the moon, she was an armored warrior, and was immortal. Her surname, however, was Tsukino. So, in the case of the Japanese surname already being "of the moon". She was basically "Immortal Nectar of the Moon" or....we could go with "Immortal God(dess) of the Moon".
The XIV discount version is Soma Kagami. A Moonkeeper WoL whom is governed by Menphina and may as well be immortal. It would have, of course, made more sense for her main job to be paladin, but it's black mage (because that's what I like playing as). So, we can tie in "mirror" as having something to do with the aspects of magic. Manaward is kind of reflective in some sense.
I used that generator that SE provided. Very useful!
I was reading a book just before my ffxi days started so, the book char was named Tarma, she was warriors and general. when i created my char in FFxi i was talk to my best friend and miss typed La before Tarma hence Latarma, i like the way it look and ran with it.
I saw where you found the info for these names and no worries what you have is fine, but there is something I wanna bring to your attention in case it was unknown. While the kanji you would use for the name "Haru" 陽 does mean "light" and this kanji combined with thick/fat (太) makes the word for sun (taiyou/太陽), the light part is actually yang, as in yin and yang. The name actually means light as in positive/uplifting.
As for the last name, as you said it's literally wind and song combined. Not bad but it does hit the same as it might in English. You could always change it to Fuuta, since it means the same thing, in a way. Honestly Windsong sounds a bit better to me, sorry... forgive me. T.T
me name... errrm was made by mixing random words and hope i sounded well(in me head)
This character wasn't even supposed to be my main. I made him when I first did the trial. Usually when I play MMO's I like "becoming" my character. In this case, it's different. He's separate from me. For characters who I look at as separate entities, I like them to have lore friendly names.
(Sometimes I like having a lore friendly name even if I'm seeing the character as myself but I'd be more likely to choose something having to do with the weather.)
Anyway, I did some random name searches and decided I liked the Z prefix. A few searches later I found "Kuza." Though I think I might have just corrupted a search result I can't remember. I went basic with Tia as his last name because lore and because I learned a bit about Miqo'te naming conventions beforehand. Nunh would have felt like a tryhard surname.
It was because I became an au ra actually so I tried to think of something original that might fit lore.
It ended up still not fitting lore but I liked it enough to stick with it.
FFXIV in-game name generator, I think.
Nemeera is the name of my deathknight in Wow and Starnight was the name of my chanter in Aion
Paladins are always my go to class in MMOs so Sanctify has always clicked real well for me as a paladin-esque name. My last name is to pay homage to a sever where I made some of my best friends on a game I used to play :)
"Iyami" means "sarcasm" in Japanese. Sarcasm is pretty much my main language.
"Galvayra" was one of the five Weapons of Light in the third Slayers anime, Slayers Try. It was a magic bow that fired arrows of light, and was used by main heroine Lina Inverse to strike the final blow against the demon lord Dark Star Dugradigdo. Gave me a bit of a chuckle the first time someone called my character the Weapon of Light.
