Honestly, I don't think this is a bad idea in and of itself. I think a division between content for younger and older players is something of a long-term inevitability for the genre, especially as it grows increasingly real and less and less niche.

That said.. in my opinion the genre (and possibly the internet itself) is still too immature for such a server to become anything but a cesspool of obscene language, abusive behaviour and questionable link dropping, rather than resulting in a general increase in player maturity, even were it to require proof of age. While I certainly don't condemn the idea and even think it may have half a chance of achieving something vaguely worthwhile.. I'd avoid such a server for my own part, at the present time.

Well, to be honest, I wouldn't mind more mature content. Heck, I'd even provide proof of age to SE in order to be able to access it, even if it was via a $1/month additional fee that I'd have to approve.

I'm not talking like full nudity brothels or anything like that (heck, isn't that what AoC is for anyway), but the gambling etc.. less restraints on chat, it'd be cool.

If there was an 18+ server it would instantly become the un-official RP server. Deny it your hearts content but you know it's true. Now lets all close our eyes and picture what the streets of Ul'dah would look like on said server.

Have you ever visited the Miner's guild? Or possibly do the first PUG class quest?

To put it bluntly this will never happen because they want the game to appeal to the masses meaning all ages old enough to understand it's content. Also remember, MMO games tend to have 2 separate rating systems with one being the "pre-programmed" content and the other being "online interactions rating" wich to a point ends up being NR because it varies so much. Now would it be nice to have such content? For sure! An age verification system and extra fee would be ideal. Sad part is, there is always a way around such systems. I guess in the end, it's up to the parent to control the type of content their children have access to.

The Biggest problem about making a 18 + only room is how are they going to to police it. It's like going to a porn site that says are you 18 or older click here a person who's under age and really wants to see it will still click where they need to to begin with.

anyone see the mmo i think called kabod, it's adult mmo and the higher in level you get the less close you get to take off ...u basically get naked and see the breastasises of the toon lmao. but i doubt they would add anything like that or even follow in the suggestions probably would ruin there ratings even if it's separate.

i tried to find the youtube vid of it but the one with the boobs in it got flaged and removed. lmao. also if you get hit really hard by mobs your armor breaks and pops out the boobies lmao. to funny.

Gating content in such a way would have no effect on the games rating. The rating would still ramp up if said content was in the game (Wether minors could use it or not)

It's like saying Grand Theft Auto could be E for everyone if you didn't break the law, beat up hookers, or shoot everyone in sight. It's totally possible to obey trafic laws, be a taxi driver, or even live a honest life!

I apologize if you construed from my post that I believed there were hordes of slobbering RPers just waiting for an 18+ server to satiate their carnal desires. Not my point. That said, "some" RPers do RP their cyber. I've seen it since IRC.

This would mean you can only use credit cards to pay for the game, not debit cards, or if you use a debit card you are unable to access the 18+ content. There are people with bad credit ratings that cannot get a credit card or for some reason defaulted on the payments and cant use it, they are then locked out of this content even if they wanted to see it.

However they can have drinking and gambling and still keep thier 12+ rating as long as they do it right, the laws on gambling prevent gambling with real money if you are under 18, this is how Zynga poker and things work, because its virtual currency and using gil for gambling can be done.

As for drinking as long as thier is nothing like drink driving (not sure how a drunk goobbue rampage would work) and no drunk fights its perfectly acceptable, past final fantasy games have had little drinking things before, even if its just a pub where the patrons slur thier speech. This sort of things can be added to a 12+ game without an 18+ rating.

Tell me about it. The way the NPCs talk in general isn't exactly safe for kids. (though it bears mentioning that most kids would never read the NPC text to begin with) I mean they swear, talk about your private parts, call your mom a poxywhore, and profess their sexual appetite for monkeys...

Pretty much this, my retainers and path companion all have a crush on my, at the airship docks in LL there is an npc that says something along the lines of (and yes I will not censor it, SE doesnt) "some guy told me that they were freezing thier bollocks of on them, glad I dont have any" which is kind of borderline imo.

People will cyber no matter what. Having a area where only adults can go might bring it out a little bit more but I think people tend to like somewhere more private for that kind of thing. There are games out there that have servers like this and well yes cybering does happen its not nearly as common as some people here fear it would be.
