New Tales from the Storm (August 18)

While I liked Fordola more in this story than I was expecting the character I really hope that we see more of in the Garlean-themed expansion is Arenvald. He can fill the role of a character/child of two nations but without all of the mixed feelings from audience that Fordola brings. Especially since Gaius will be presumably filling the villian-turned-protagonist role. That said I don't think that we have seen the last of Fordola in game either. Of the two I think that Arenvald's arc has more potential (being largely unexplored) and I hope he doesn't get thrown under a bus to further Fordola's arc since the two are being set up as foils to each other. Fordola is a much better foil for Arenvald then she was for Lyse. I prefer they continue that path with the two of them but if they have to kill one off I'd rather they play death=redemption straight with Fordola and contrast that with Yotsuyu's death ending her chance at redemption.

That said I've enjoyed this Tales from the Storm series and am excited for the final installment.

The forced conscription angle is very interesting, especially with the 'Battle Royale' style collar that promises a very traumatic death in exchange for non-compliance. It also highlights once again that the Eorzeans do not shy away from forced conscription and painful torture even when they condemn others for resorting to such measures.

That Primals are shown to be a continued threat is not entirely unexpected. It does show that the hostile elements of certain Beast Tribes will not back down, though. Which begs the question as to how such a cycle can even be brought to an end.

I can't find anything that suggests that it's forced conscription. It sounds like it was the most practical way Raubahn could make a system for people to demonstrate who they were really loyal to and still keep an eye on what they were doing. Ironically, it's pretty much what Garlamald is doing (or says they are doing). As in, serve in the Garlean Legions for 20 year and don't screw up and you'll have earned citizenship by the end of it. Although I get the feeling the conscription won't be anywhere near that long... There's probably also the added benefit that most of the convicts were probably in the Garlean Legions anyway, so asking them to fight to prove they no longer serve Garlemald isn't asking them to do anything too crazy. If anything, it sounds like the idea is to give the people who really didn't want to serve Garlemald in the first place an opportunity to get pardoned. Obviously there's going to be some people who don't want that and some people who'd use that opportunity to undermine the Alliance, but there's certainly people who'd jump at any chance to prove that they never wanted to be part of the Garlean Legions in first place.

It's nice to see the Scions going back and doing Scion stuff like killing primals again. It's also nice to see how far primal killing tactics have come since the days of 1.0 and the Company of Heroes. Y'mhitra and the other NPCs from the SMN quests must be really happy to see that art flourishing like they hoped it would.

I was more referring to the whole 'slowly and painfully choke the life out of someone' using a magical collar for non compliance. That's a rather cruel and unusual punishment, even when accounting for someone who is a criminal.

I don't think Fordola's appearance here will mean that she doesn't make any further appearance in the near-future MSQ. Perhaps we'll get some of the same information in another form, but this still serves to flesh out the idea of what she's been doing recently, that might just be alluded to otherwise. While also bringing the focus back onto her and Arenvald after they may have been 'out of sight, out of mind' to the average player.

The story has to be extra-detailed about what's going on, of course, because reading this right now in pre-4.4, things have changed since we last saw her in the game.

Why wouldn't he? They're his close friends - those two specifically. He's distraught for most of ARR after they died, questioning why he's the one that survived. (As of my current progress with my alt in Heavensward, he's still talking about them and saying he has to "earn this".)

Having just started another alt character, they are actually the first 'minor Scions' present - all three of them together, from the first time you enter the Waking Sands.

I've thought about this generally, because I think it's necessary that all the class quest events happen whether you are directly involved in them or not.

The best comparison I can make is the Kingdom Hearts games where each world is "here's a Disney movie but we pushed the hero out of the way so Sora can be the main character".

Basically, any job quest we take on is the "Kingdom Hearts version", except we can only guess at how it played out otherwise.

(eg. I like to think that the White Mage questline actually involved Sylphie as the chosen mage.)

Specifically for summoner, it's a bit harder to place since the player-substitute needs to have fought all the primals, otherwise I'd suggest Y'mhitra. Though overall the plot is more tied to MSQ than most of the job quests, so I'm more inclined to just think it's one of the things we did actually do. Totally not influenced by my own class choice.

But overall this is probably a whole separate topic on its own. Someday I'll get around to writing it.

Cruel and unusual punishment, yes, but still the motivation behind their "conscription" is very different. It's not really comparable to the apparent situation of Garlemald forcing conquered populations into their army. That takes free people and makes them not free. This is almost the opposite - giving freedom (or something relatively like it) to someone who would otherwise be rightfully in prison.

There's also a possibility the collar doesn't *actually* do that and might just be used stun her or something, but they make it sound more threatening so conscripts really won't want to contemplate escaping.

Wild idea - is this going to end with some sort of massive aether-destabilising event that will change how/if primals can be summoned? Or we figure out how to banish their particular aether into the void, or something.


...is there one Lifestream that flows through all the shards? Or are they gated off like the worlds themselves? (Any chance of safe inter-shard travel if we can really master the Echo? Preferably without being stuck in the aetherial sea like Minifilia afterwards.)

Well, sure, if other players want to think of it that way, by all means. :p But having the summoner squad specifically highlighted in an official side story gives the job-class a veneer of canonical veracity that other classes/jobs don't enjoy, you know? (Well, other than for dragoons, at least.)

And yes, because of the way the levels 30-60 summoner quests are closely linked to events in the MSQ, I can't have been the only one to have thought that the summoner was meant to be a poster class at one point or another, especially during ARR. Of course, we all know it didn't turn out that way, but I still have my head-canon. And I'm chuffed that it remains not just in-line with official events, but is even bolstered by them.

By the way, even if the WoL wasn't a summoner-main, I don't think it would be necessary for Y'mhitra to stand in as a substitute. More likely than not, her need to find someone who has firsthand experience of encountering — and surviving — a primal, would have taken her to the Immortal Flames sooner or later, to find likely candidates. Either that, or Captain Wolf's investigation into the mystery of a certain rogue summoner would have led him to Y'mhitra eventually, to seek help in tackling the emerging threat.

Ah, that's a good version! The ARR summoner plot may not have even happened directly, and perhaps the summoner squad are the first new practitioners of the art.

Or maybe they formed earlier, at the point where our quest would have started, and went through the whole questline as a group.


And yeah, the summoner quests were pretty good at feeding my headcanon too! From the start it's seemed like it really fits as 'the' class for the main character. Particularly with that giant pattern we see in our visions with the crystals - that's got to be a seriously powerful arcanist geometry-spell, right? And then we actually cast it when we defeat Lahabrea at the end of ARR. Also acquiring "dragon powers" (Dreadwyrm Trance) in the course of Heavensward fitted so well.

(It got a bit lost in Stormblood though.)

Next one's out! And it's about how Cid and Nero met for the first time!

Is there any indication of when the last part of the story takes place? "Final confrontation" is kind of vague, since we've had a lot of "final confrontations" involving Cid and the Ironworks in ARR and beyond (when Cid is bearded).

It could be referring to the upcoming confrontation with Omega. The picture at the end of the story is of the pit in which Omega resides, I believe. We also know that 4.4 is very likely to conclude the Omega story arc. As far as his beard is concerned, it could be that he has chosen to shave and will have a new model as a result once we see him again.

Given that the end picture is of Cid staring at The Yawn, I'm assuming it's sometime during the next Omega questline.

Interesting to learn (I've had a quick look through the EE, but didn't see an explicit mention) that Bozja was either a state or a city annexed by Garlemald. I know it could have been inferred by the fact that Bozja was in Othard, but it could have just been a Garlean construction. Sounds like it was much older than that, and its previous occupants weren't massive fans of the way they had been treated.
I suppose it is safe to also infer that these Bozjan rebels knew enough about what the empire was up to there (Meteor). Possibly this suggests/confirms suspicions that Bozja was built upon significant Allagan ruins?


I'm sure Tataru will rustle up a new set of threads for Cid. I expect him to feature prominently in the 5.0 story, and he'll need a new look.


Edit: I also noticed Cid uses an Eorzean exclamation - "seven hells" - I'm sure he uses it and similar expressions in the 2.x MSQ, though can't point to specifics. I just have a feeling he does.

Anyway, EE confirms Garlemald has banned religions, mistrustful of them and that they often lead to primal summoning. I wonder if that sort of language is a bit more universal than previously thought? Harder to root out. Or are they just using it to demonstrate Cid is a non-conformist even then?

This one caught me off-guard, to be honest! I've been imagining Nero as the Tim Taylor of the Garlean Empire; not untrustworthy because he's malicious, but because whether something is possible is going to be the deciding factor - not whether it's needed, wanted, or even advisable. It's all about more power, and there's a good chance it's going to go sideways, but when it hits the fan he doesn't flake out, either.

Even in Crystal Tower he tried to save the clones under the pretext of "If I die here it's because I bloody well decided to." With that headcanon taken for granted, it's easy to imagine their rivalry was always more or less as we see it on display in Omega, not that a villainous Tribunus became a comic relief amoral goof.

I did not expect for that headcanon to ever be validated, lol.

Next we're going to find out Gaius van Baelsar really did survive because Nero couldn't resist going back to watch Ultima Weapon in action, helped him escape as the place came down, and just never bothered to tell anyone. ("You never asked, Garlond!")

Fun Fact: When you meet Nero in Mor Dhona in 2.1, he picks you out as the adventurer famed for storming the Praetorium, but never suggests this adventurer killed Gaius, just bested him.

Nero's always been a fav of mine since 2.0, and I am just so excited to see him finally get some lore-based screen time! Well now we know where the Magitek Bits come from if nothing else. It's nice to get an understanding of the rivalry between Cid and Nero before things became what they were. Also it sheds light to how Nero may have felt when the WoL prevailed in the Castrum. Looks like Nero is the opposite to our dear Cid.

Bozja Citadel being in the Garlean frontier seems similar to how Nero is from rural Garlemald. For all it's modernization, Garlemald still has places far from the cities that havn't been fully modernized yet. The other reason I think Bozja Citadel is in Garlemald is that the lore book mentions that it an imperial stronghold and a major commercial center. So it looks like it's far from the major Garlean cities, but still someplace the civilians from the surrounding area go to on a regular basis. There's also the issue that the rebels from Bozja had to be able to get into what is probably Garlemald's capital with weapons without raising suspicion. I find that a lot easier to believe if it's Garlean natives instead of foreigners. Admittedly, I do like the idea that Garlemald has always had Garlean citizens who weren't happy with how the Garlean Empire was handling things, they just wouldn't have gotten enough steam to form a political party 40 years into the Empire.

Cid and Nero are pretty much the opposites of each other in every way except for that they're both engineering geniuses.

Upbringing: urban vs rural
Economic situation: upper class vs lower class
Effort put into to get noticed: a little vs a lot
Engineering expertise: original projects vs reverse engineering
Personalities: genial vs confrontational
Organization styles: in the moment vs long-term

I can easily see how them not getting along is a lot less about them really hating each other and much more about neither of them really getting where the other is coming from.

You know, at first I wasn't terribly fond of Nero. But the more I've seen/read about him, the more I've warmed up to him. It's nice to get more background on him and Cid, especially as kids.

Hopping in to point out a few things I noticed from the latest Tales from the Storm.

First of all, concerning Bozja. It was a commercial hub in Othard under the control of the Garleans according to the lore book. Since most of Othard has been unveiled now and the Burn has been more or less confirmed to not be the remains of Bozja, I'm guessing we might find the remains of the city in the landbridge / Anchorite region of Othard, west of the Dalmasca westersands.

Also according to the lore book, this occurred in the 41st Year of the First Emperor if we're going by the Garlean calendar. 1st Year = 1522, and 56th Year = the present year/5th Year of 7th Umbral/1st Year of 7th Astral/"1577" for those who prefer ease of math.

This brings me to the inconsistency I found in today's Tale: the story opens saying that this story takes place during the 38th Year of the First Emperor, aka 1559. It also says that Cid and Nero are both age 12.

However, this would mean that Cid defected from Garlemald and founded the Garlond Ironworks at age 15. This isn't exactly outside the realm of the believable, but it conflicts with the lore book telling us that both Cid and Nero are 34 in the present day, the 56th Year of the Emperor. 56 - 34 = Cid/Nero born during the 22nd Year of the Emperor. + 12 = 34th Year of the Emperor / 1555. The story is a full 4 years off the mark, assuming the lore book is not in error in two separate sections. Cid and Nero joined the Magitek Academy at the age of 12, but they joined in the Year 1555. The Magitek Academy is also a 6 year program and it is stated that Cid and Nero are both alumni of the Academy. If Cid was really only 12 years old in 1559, he would not have been able to graduate the Academy by his defection 3 years after this story supposedly takes place, following the destruction of Bozja. This date also conflicts with Cid's own admission that it was his magitek inventions at the Academy which were used against Ala Mhigo during the short storm of the city-state in 1557.

This actually brings up something I've been wondering about that I might have missed:

We all know that Midas nan Garlond did his test of the Meteor Project at Bozja despite the events of this story, and blasted it from the face of the planet, thus proving the rebels correct.

So the question: how did the rebels know?

Was it just a lucky guess that the Meteor Project happened to be the one time that the conspiracy theory was validated rather dramatically? Presumably the official staff of the Meteor Project, including Midas nan Garlond, had more in the way of resources and expertise than the rebels, if only because the rebels would have to steal and smuggle the reports out of Bozja rather than just consulting it openly. And yet Midas obviously saw fit to go through with the test anyway, and unless there was some unknown scheme at work here (to what end?), he probably did not expect to die at Bozja, along with the rest of the city.

I wouldn't be surprised if we end up going to whatever is left of Bozja at some point in 5.0. Perhaps as a dungeon, or even an entire zone.

We don't have a precise location for Bozja as of yet. Dalmasca is definitely in Othard though.

Dalmasca is at the southern part of Othard. It's not been officially labelled on any map so far, but based on NPC dialogue, we know it's south of Nagxia, and featuring largely of desert, ie the Dalmasca Estersand and Westersand (and the capital city of Rabanastre somewhere in the middle).

Infuriatingly, this is contradicted by the lorebook (and only the lorebook; every other non-lorebook source agrees with NPC dialogue in-game), which claims Dalmasca to be somewhere in Ilsabard, so we just kind of pretend that it's a typo there.

As for Bozja, we have no idea where it is. The mention in this Tales From The Storm that it's "frontier lands" is new information to add to our very limited collection.

Anyway I like the relationship between those two and really hope that Nero will survive Omega so that he can continue to annoy Cid, so that he might truly finally notice him.

I liked that story! Nice to see some character history.

Also, tactical reuse of the 'young Cid' character model for the illustrations. Would have liked to see Nero in there as well though (from behind at least, if they want to cheat on not showing his face) - I'm having trouble picturing him at that age.

It says that right in the opening of the story - "the first meeting... as far as Cid was aware". And then a few paragraphs explaining why Nero has been aware of Cid prior to this.

Really great story, and I like the fact that those two were the ones that seemingly developed the prototype for the cylindrical Garlean fighter airships seen in the 1.0 trailers.

And yes I agree, the math seems off that they were aged 12 in the 38th year of the empire... unless we can assume that the Empire is somewhere in its 60th year now since the Encyclopedia lists Cid as being aged 34 at the moment--- give or take a year or two?. I also noticed there was a subtle hint of foreshadowing established within contents of the story... it reflects the obvious notion that Nero and Cid are going to be doing a lot more collaborations in the future. Collaborations that will undoubtedly help save their country (from imploding on itself?).

I also really like the way Nero would snarl the name "Garlond" and it just confirms yet again how much Nero always had a grudging respect for his self appointed rival, Cid... but was always deeply jealous of the Garlond fame.

In Garlean culture, social standing and acknowledgement was everything... and here was this exceptional prodigy from the provinces, a nobody (at least until we find out more of his past) with nothing but his sheer driven determination to succeed using his keen intelligence.

In his mind, he had to struggle to prove himself while he thinks Cid had effortless sailing being recognized (being the son of the incredibly famous Midas Garlond). In other words, Cid had the perfect lineage and family name he desired so badly... hence, the consistent badgering and minor bullying. But deep down he still respected Cid's abilities.

This tale now gives much more depth to the excellent dialogue he had with Cid at the end of the Sigma story arc... they have really matured since their first meeting.

I wasn't too fond of this last Tales - largely because I felt it did not jive well with canon as established in the Praetorium. When Nero chats with Cid just prior to the boss fight against him, Cid is utterly perplexed when Nero rants and raves and basically spells out his rivalry against him. The impression was that Cid had never noticed Nero's envy or obsession with beating him, until that very moment when Nero tells him in no uncertain terms.

This story, though, indicates that not only was Cid aware that his peers would like to show him up, he was aware of Nero in particular! Maybe his confusion was due to some remnant of the bout of amnesia he was suffering under while convalescing in Eastern Thanalan? Regardless, it really pulled me out of the story.

Even apart from that, the story wasn't that great. I anticipated every beat as it came, a story of teeth-clenched-teamwork between rivals reluctantly forced to cooperate. Definitely the weakest of the four entries this batch (though, to be fair, the first three were great so it was a high bar to hurdle).

I had thought Cid's confuzzlement was more that he'd been gone for fifteen years and Nero was accusing him of continuing to hog the spotlight, not understanding that his defection only brought his legend to new heights and solidified him as a myth that could never be beaten - either you fall short because you are not Cid nan Garlond, or you walk the trail he blazed. Nero was counting on the Ultima Weapon to shatter that legend - to show a man could rise higher than Garlond, to show that not even Garlond could stop it.

Perhaps Cid always knew they were rivals and that Nero was particularly bitter about it, but hadn't realized the degree to which he'd suffered for it. He wasn't just coming in second place, he was technically and culturally forbidden to exceed it. Garlond had become not just his arch nemesis, but the emblem of his own glass ceiling.

Imagine thinking of yourself as merely absent from a rivalry for fifteen years to find out, after all that time had passed, that your ghost haunted them every day of it.

I'm interested to see what Cid's trump card is for dealing with Omega. Given that the information he requested was sequestered in Garlemald, I think that it's possibly something with a significant connection to him. As his father was key in initiating contact with Dalamud, and hence enabling its later descent, perhaps the information is a schematic of a prototype Lunar Transmitter. Finding the right frequency and using enough power could perhaps drag Omega out of its literal hidey-hole and allow the WoL to engage its physical form directly. And as history has proven, it's likely he'll need Nero's help to finish the job despite the risk of Nero using the knowledge for morally ambiguous deeds later.

I have a feeling one of the narrative purposes of the Omega raid is for Cid to get over his knee-jerk reaction of "seal it away" to dangerous technology. While Eorzea might accept that as a valid response, there's no way the Garleans will. And the Scions are going to need Cid (and Nero, if he survives) when they go to Garlemald.

Yeah, I think so. There even seemed to be hints of that theme in the Crystal Tower storyline when I replayed that recently. (Can't remember exactly what, just that there was a line or two that seemed to tie in with Cid and Nero's future conversations in Omega.)
