I haven't played TERA in many an age (it was still pay-2-play during my tenure to give you an idea of how long it's been), but isn't that mostly because the current best/coolest classes are specifically locked to Elin? Kind of like how in Blade & Soul there are less Lyn than you would expect because they only have one race-exclusive class and it's really only a variation of a class that several other races can be anyway (of course, I haven't played that in ages either so things may have changed, but I feel like I saw more torpedo-tit Gons more than anything, with a smattering of Jins too--moreso than I feel like I saw Lolis Lyns at any rate).

I typically go for male characters, though exceptions exist. Going to most areas though, I wouldn't say there's more of one sex over the other, and it seems pretty even.

Also, echoing that our characters are sadly lacking in booty, and you would really need to be zoomed in to see the butt in any meaningful way, or really not paying attention to anything else

If I could add to this nice discussion you guys are having, games where you can customize and choose gender, I tend to go female because I like the idea of being someone other than a male. I grew up too much on male-centric action movies, so I've kinda grown desensitized to it. Experiencing a story from a female perspective (or how I imagine she would react in storyline) is a fresh take on a lot of things to me, so that tends to drive my choices. It also doesn't help that in games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age Inquisition, and Fallout 4, the female VAs completely outshined the male voice actors.

Careful, some of those females might actually be males!

What they’re saying is that SE’s statistics include RMT bots. That’s why they have males projected higher—most RMT bots are the generic Male Hyur Midlanders, though I do see a lot of the THM bots as male Lalafells.

I know exactly What Rita is saying. The whole point of what I originally quoted was that people are going by their own perceptions which is anecdotal evidence. You and Rita are just saying "Our anecdotal evidence beats SE's statistics."

When I looked up the statictis (and shared them in this thread), I thought the same, but there are still things to consider that are making those statistics more valid than anecdotal experience and then perception of the 3/4 ratio the OP claims:

Even if we only take NA into consideartion, with about 250k active characters, that would be roughly 1,6%
I dont know if SE used anything to filter out bots in their statics and I know the amount of them can seem overwhemling, when you see like 30 of them teleporting at once, but generally speaking: I would assume that the statics doesnt include so many bots that it isnt a reperensation of actual player-preference anymore. Maybe not down to the excat number, but certainly not enough to shift the 40/60 ratio to a 75/25 one - thats down to personal perception. Maybe its more like 50/50 for the western world aswell, if you subtract the bots - but I doubt its gonna be much more/different than that.

RMT bots don't get deleted when they get permabanned. I know this because the ones I blacklisted that have long since been banned are still on my blacklist, whereas actual players who delete their character or transfer servers will show up as "Unable to retrieve".

I've seen over 100 bots active simultaneously on Cactaur alone when it was at its absolute worst (Via player search) and they've been purging a few thousand gil farming/RMT advertising bots every week for who knows how long, so they definitely do comprise a significant part of the game's population.

Theoretically...it would be a bad idea to delete them.
The name is reserved/locked.
Means fewer places to make more "random named" bots.

Again..its just a theory.

I suspect that when it comes to character creation, players can (generally, there are bound to be exceptions,) be split into three major groups:

1: People who want their character to look as much like themselves as possible. They might be willing to throw in a single 'fantasy' detail like a tail or elf ears, but by and large they want themselves in the game.

2: People who want their character to look as different from themselves as possible. This includes opposite gender, and even purposely avoiding the game's 'human' stand-in race.

3: People who don't care about the above and just want whatever looks the coolest to them.

I did play as male hyru for the entire arr, switch to female Mi'qote for HW and it was like a new game

This right here. I make a few exceptions, depending on the game, but generally, I roll with a female avatar. I think I've only stuck with a male character once in an MMO environment, and that was SWTOR, but I was mostly doing that for a class assignment over a semester.

A friend of mine and a friend of his(who play hyer and miqo'te respectively) tried to guesstimate where on the muscle slider the miqo'te males are fixed at. It's around 70-80ish from what they gathered. I know that miqo'te are considered the twinks of the game, but no one can deny that they look very muscle-y and a little more bulky than what a twink would entail.

Many females like myself enjoy playing our own gender, while many males enjoy playing females because they consider them attractive.

I'm not sure that this game is the one where this sort of thing happens the most though. I see many male characters, unlike certain other games...

You zoom out when fighting a boss that's actually got anything difficult to dodge. Like, I don't do Castrum Fluminis zoomed in, no. Obviously not. I zoom out so I can see the whole battlefield. But, say, a Sastasha or Baby Ifrit or something, that's really not necessary.

Fighting anything else or just crafting or walking around in town or something, I like to zoom in. I didn't spend all that time creating the look I want for my character, and/or glamours only to have her zoomed out so far that she's just a speck on screen.

Why is it saddening? You CAN zoom in and out depending on the fight with a light touch of your finger on the mousewheel, you know.

It's not like I'm going to drop dead in Castrum Fluminis because my character fills half the screen, because, you know, I can zoom out for that fight and zoom back in when done.

Honestly? Glamour options.

I tried making a male toon....the glamour options are just....bad.....

In any kind of story driven game I tend insert myself into the story, I like to answer dialogue options and stuff as if they were directed at me and If I'm really invested in a story I find it hard to play a character. So I choose female by default.

I don't think the male/female character ratio is highly skewed one way or another though. I haven't noticed a shortage of males in either major cities or in dungeons.

What anecdotal evidence am I providing, pray tell? That RMT bots are typically Male Hyur Midlanders? Go to any starting city state and look for them shouting. Examine them. The majority of the time, they are male Midlanders. Occasionally I have seen male Miqo'te, and some of the MSQ RMT are Lalafell. But the ones that /shout in city-states? Male Midlander 9 times out of 10.

The statistics count RMT. They don't exclude those like unofficial censes do.

No, RMT bots are never deleted. The accounts are just permanently banned.

Phew! Thank goodness they added yet another hairstyle to the game today that will only look good on females. I was afraid they might actually add something to the game that actually helps males look masculine.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised when 90% of the characters I see running around are female. No reason to waste any time making something in the game for male characters.

All in all I happen to really like girls so its all good :P

This is a cool thread. I am male irl and I do try to mimic my avatar to myself. I do this because I became somewhat emotionally involved in the game when I first started and feel the need to carry on. It’s interesting hearing others answers. I don’t think I could ever make a female char. I did for giggles once at the Fantasia character create screen but it....didn’t feel right . Maybe one day for a dare or if I lose a bet
