why is job-locked gear still a thing that exists??

ARR-era mage gear is equippable by all classes, so you *can* equip (or ideally glamour) those wizard hats if you want to! They're not as nice as some of the later hats that are class-locked, but it's still an option. (You just can't go in the opposite direction and put tank armour on your mages.)

At present, if you assign two plates to the same gear, it tries to change it every time you switch to that job, and if you're not in a city, it erases it, so you end up with the original appearance for the gear. It's still technically glamoured, it just doesn't get applied.

That's the point I'm trying to make here, there is that the appearance is applied to your character, not the gear. They can simply apply the gear appearances directly to your character and not do anything to the gear you're wearing at all.

I don't really care if a healer is glamoured to tank gear. I only care that the costume gear ISN'T able to be worn as gear. eg let the system have "Gear" and "Costume" and just allow things to be dumped into Gear or Costume(glamour) slots and once dumped into the costume slot, it's no longer role-locked.

That doesn't explain the leveling sets, specifically the SB ones that have dyeable models where any variants for DoM/DoW jobs aren't dyeable.

I just tested this and you seem to be mistaken - but I think I can guess why it appears to be the case for you: your glamour plates are using job-specific gear.

I set up two gearsets of the same Lv70 caster gear linked to different plates: my summoner costume which uses the AF1 coat and all-classes accessories, and my black mage which uses the "Bogatyr's Longcoat" Lv50 caster gear.

If I apply the black mage set in town, warp to the field and switch to summoner, the coat remains glamoured as the Bogatyr's longcoat because summoner can equip it.

If I apply the summoner set in town, warp to the field and switch to black mage, the coat loses its glamour because black mage cannot equip the summoner-specific coat - and if you check the gear information, the glamour is still there with the message that it's unavailable due to class restrictions. Meanwhile, the all-classes items retain their appearance from the summoner glamour plate that was previously applied. It works just the same as a prism-applied glamour.


Appearance has never been applied directly to the character, it's applied to the gear. You can select a piece of gear, apply a glamour to it (without equipping it first) and that information remains linked to the gear whether you are wearing it or not. It's also why plates permanently overwrite whatever previous glamour or dye information was on the gear you are wearing, and why the plate needs to be reapplied if you change what gear you have equipped.

More generally, I suspect it's why they had to build the "complicated" glamour dresser system that applies glamours like with prisms, instead of making "simple" overlays. The system needs that information attached to the gear, so the plate system is built to apply new information to the gear.

Yeah, I really hope one day they ease up on the restrictions for glamouring gear. I'd even settle for them keeping it restricted for current expansion gear but stuff from older expansions should definitely become unlocked.

I'm of the opinion we need more locked gear, not less.

I love the scholar's culottes. I had a really cute glam based around them. Once I got WHM and AST to 70, as well, and I wanted to play with all 3 healers, I had to come up with an alternate look. Makes me sad that all 3 can't wear the skirt with knee socks.

If I had to take a stab in the dark as to why role lock on glamour is still a thing it's most likely do to the system using the same "check" process that equipping gear does. So to say if I try to glam the level 68 DRG crafted body on my PLD the system at present first checks to see if I am a DRG, then would check if I'm level 68, then dose a glamour only check to make sure my gear is also level 68 or higher. The first would fail and block me from using the glamour, but if it didn't and the other two passed I would be able to use it.

Assuming this is the way SE's system works a decent work-around would be to change the way the Glamour system "checks" from if I am a DRG "At present" to if I'm a DRG "At all". So instead it would check to make sure I have a DRG of level 68 or higher, then check to see if I'm level 68 or higher on my current job, then check if my gear is level 68 or higher. Hitting all three of those my PLD could glamour the level 68 DRG body onto my current gear. Unlocks cross-role glamour AND gives people a reason to level alt jobs, something I also see talked about on the forums from time to time, an everyone wins outcome. Of course, this is all based on theory crafting on my part, so take it with a grain of salt.

As a closing note, if my post didn't make it clear, I'm all for being able to cross-role glamour.

So I've read all the replies on this thread after forgetting about it for about a day and want to add something.
When new gear is designed they sometimes use one Job as a pattern for the whole Role. If you're a caster, nine times out of ten, you're going to look like a Black Mage, despite Red Mage arguably being better suited in role gear designed for a Bard (Amon's Hat is a contentious issue with more than one RDM I know). I think this is what bothers me the most about the current restrictions, that despite it trying to maintain Job identity, it sometimes makes you give it up for the sake of the rest of your role group. :/

Why shouldn't I be allowed to wear my own clothes whenever I want to?

I wonder how much server-side overhead they could save themselves by removing the check.
