When I came back after 3 years, I started over because
1) I wasn't even max level on any battle classes (though I was 50 on miner which was the max at the time)
2) I forgot the story
But now that I'm all caught up I probably wouldn't EXCEPT maybe on a JP server, mostly so I could practice my Japanese language skills.

My main will always be my main, but I've got lots of alts. It really just comes down to "what flavor do I want to WoL in today?" That flavor is usually Highlander or Au Ra but I've got at least one of everything. Its a habit I picked up playing WoW, but even now that I don't have to have 10 characters...I still do. More actually. What can I say, I love variety. ^_^

I've always wanted to branch out and create an alt on another server just to experience a different community, but I haven't had the heart to do so yet. There's much to still be done on my main...

To play through the story with hindsight is a great thing. My mentality on my main was to get to end game and to not totally skip the story but skim through it. Watching all the minor characters anew knowing what they will amount to is enjoyable to me and all the dialogue that I'd missed before or made no sense to me at the time is cool too. Like the other day I just found out that the half garlean Scion we had an adventure with in 4.1 has been chilling the whole time and was even recruited before me :P

Start over with my existing character(s) so that all they have done and gained is void and null and need to be done again? Absolutely not.
When I feel the desire to "start over" I create an alt. All the experience of starting from scratch, while retaining my old leveled characters for play when I feel like it.

I just recently made a new character on Midgardsormr for a fresh start. I've been around since 1.0 but always played a lala or Miqote (female since female irl). This time I made a male Roe and started in a different city for a different perspective. I never played a male character so it's fun. I also never used to like Roegadyn but I made a hunk lol!

I recently asked in New Player forum why not make an alt instead of addding jobs to your main. As a new player I don’t get it, seems easier to roll an alt, have the msq available to level and just play like “old school” games.
So to answer your question my “main” (after coming back after 2+ years away) is a summoner, I’m debating what to make now and it will be an alt not an added job. I have no desire to try to figure out how to squeeze out exp while leveling a new job (I’m not a huge fan of pug duty groups) when I can have the msq available.
This won’t be popular but I’ll say it anyway.
I think a lot of long time players could do with picking a new server and starting from zero again. I’ve been in NN and a lot of people there clearly forgot what it feels like tone new, and even if you did make an alt like that you have knowledge newbies don’t have so you have easy mode really. It’s been said “when you forget the pain, the experience means nothing”.

I could NEVER just drop Leo like that. I bought too many things for him.. I’ve recently made an alt though.
