revisit character customization y/n?

As long as they only ADD more options I am fine with it.
What I do NOT want is a character redesign à la WoW, where my Draenei changed personality and looks.

I like my cat just the way she is and do not want to change a thing (barring opening her braids now and then).
I still have my free fantasia. :P

There is a reason the way things are, and apparently (at least according to FFXV's version of the same Luminous Studio engine) 600 bones that go into every model, so a lot of inflexibility relies on those bones/physics properties. XIV is probably less (considering how things like Mi'qote and Au Ra tails clip through everything) versus many games based on CryEngine or Unreal (Aion allows a lot of flexibility, but gets really ridiculous. Aion uses CryEngine. )

Generally games have been moving towards less flexibility in customization because it increases the CPU and GPU requirements with the underlying physics (notice jiggle physics in most other games tend to be fairly stupid.) So instead you get more facial customization because it's not dependent on physics to work. That said, there really needs to be more diversity in body shapes. FFXIV's races are basically "potato sack", "nekomimi", "boring human", "not elven", "giant", with the Hyur, Mi'qote, and Au Ra all sharing enough in common that they didn't make the clothing actually fit the tails.

There, yes, should be more diversity in the actual body shapes, but what we got with FFXIV is basically "off-pale" and "off-tan" versions of each race which are hardly different from each other. What would be really cool would be for hair styles to actually evolve. Like you start your character with a shaggy "I haven't cut my hair since I was a kid" look, take out the scissors and draw a line through each handful of hair where you want to cut it, and what angle, and thus you get a bunch more basic lengths. Or you can select from specific styles that have their own specific physics.

Even the way characters walk could be customized so that you have people who have the movement of a dancer, and those that have the movement of a bouncer.

For some races, you really only get 2 faces. Female Elezen are a prime example of this and how 2 of the faces are just makeup version of the other 2. My character looks like 90% of other female miqote - even sun seekers despite being a moon keeper. The faces are the same with only small differences to tell the two clans apart.

I'm fine with not getting any sliders for body types beyond the scope of what they have already given us. Although I really don't think hips/shoulder/butt adjustments are going to break anything if boob sliders don't. As long as the degree of change is reasonable and small. In any case, I'd be happy with presets for body types too. As for faces... We need WAY MORE OPTIONS. Look at all the lovely new and unique NPCs we're getting lately. GIVE US SOME NEW OPTIONS TOO.

It's perfectly fine if you like your cat the way she is, but some of us want to have a different option other than "cutesy fanservice girl" for races such as Miqo'te and Au'ra. That doesn't mean you'd be forced to change, only that those of us who want to change actually can. They're called optionsfor a reason.

You guys think its that easy to just "increase hip or boob or butt sizes" but it isnt that easy they actually have to redesign EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF ARMOR to make it look right too....and that is a lot of work to do considering there are a lot of pieces of armor to rework and redesign....

3 words.... Black Desert Online. That's what a character creation should be able to do. If I wasn't scared that id empty my bank account on its cash shop it's where I would be now

To sum up why they dont want to revist character customization:

"We done want to go back through and refit all of the armor to not clip through updated proportions and what not. So, suck it up, princesses"

It was confirmed they can't/won't add new categories of options like body sliders, body tattoos/features, Au Ra horn types etc. but can add things to existing ones like faces, facial features etc. We can at least hope for more of those for now.

It won't hurt for SE to revisit and add more to existing races other than just hairstyles. More Fantasia money to them.

Good lord... their fantasia sales would skyrocket with this setup! I mean... how many times would we look at a finished product and go "Yes! Got it right!" Only to change our minds later with "No... chin's too long/short." or "My nose looks funny in game!"

I dislike pretty much everything about BDO.... However, they DO have an amazing character creation system. I'd love to see that kind of detail make it's way here.

I was reading all post since mine, and I noticed that some people seems to be okay with the "we can't do". They CAN, and they SHOULD do what players expect to see in game.No matter what it should cost or the time they need, they have to.
I know very well what Yoshi said about this in the first Stormblood produce letter. In the case that we just could have some more options of the thing that we already have... At least I'm expecting a huge of them. No just one more face.

I don't wanna some kind of BDO character creator either. I dislike this game and how the things works there, the creator it's amazing yes. But I would like something more like GW2 if I should give an example.You can edit some features of the preset faces (with sliders), and you can pick a preset body for your character.

It's importante to keep this thread alive, so atleast we can hope see some changes in the future expansion. We have to keep posting our ideas, what we want, what we deserve as players. ♥

Are you a programmer familiar with the FFXIV systems and limitations? SE's budget and allocations for FFXIV's development?

If not that first bit you have there is pretty.. entitled.

I'm all for more customization options, but saying they HAVE to do something, cost be damned? That's just irrational. They're a business and will do whatever will net them the most profit. Requesting things you'd like to see is great, demanding change you think you're owed is likely to be ignored.

I'd like to see more character options. Things like having more faces to choose from would be a great start.

The problem with changing the character creator and adding more body features would be the armor.
The crux of the issue is how the armor works in the first place, most of them replace the body model, i.e. you put on a shirt, it's actually an entire body model from the waist up minus hands and head with a shirt tacked on.
The body parts under the shirt are removed to prevent clipping and some parts are even further segmented to disappear when another piece of armor that could clip is equipped.

They would have to go through every single armor set and hand modify the bone weights, expansion nodes (breast slider), and the models themselves. Not to mention that the base body model is shared between most races, they would have to separate it for each race and tweak it.

That is the reason why the Miqo'te lost their butt from 1.0, they are now using the Midlander body since using the 1.0 body would cause clipping with all of the now condensed armor sets, shirts mostly.

Could they fix it? Yeah, probably, but it would easily take thousands of hours to: reprogram the game to fetch the proper armor depending on race, tweak every single armor set since 2.0 for every race and gender, and add more expanding nodes to the models for butt, hips, shoulders, thighs and whatever else people want to customize.

It's not going to happen, we're likely to get another FF MMO before we see them dump that many hours and money into something that won't really draw new players in.

On the bright side, at least we aren't using the old FFXIII engine anymore...but we are using a very scaled down and modified version of the FFXV engine, so there is room for possible improvement. Shiny, graphical improvements.

I would love for SE to add more customization. Honestly, I’ve always disliked the race and gender lock on hairstyles. I understand that would take a lot of time, but for them to be gender locked doesn’t make sense to me. And I agree with tattoos. Honestly, seeing no body tattoos or body scars on anyone makes it seem so bland to me.

For a race, since I am a big fan of all things BUNNIES, I would love to play Viera. I know we already have miqo'te and they're our animal people, so not much difference...but still ; w ; I would love it just bc bunnies...

also, I could finally let go of Tera since the only thing that kept me on there so long was my bunny elins...;;;;

The thing is... if we cannot get our body shapes. Can we at least revive any improve to the actual faces? More faces? More eyebrows and more of that we ALREADY have?

I'm waiting for the Vieras too. I came here to play as one, cus I only played FFXII aside of this one.

But I would love to see FIRST and improve in our actual races before Vieras come. If they arrive before that we can recive an improve, we will never see any improve till the game die. :(

I think we should compile a laundry list of things that should be race-unique and things that should be across the board. In regards to a character customization, we don't need to compare them to other MMOs. They have one in FFXV's comrades DLC and its pretty decent. But, most importantly: Its in-house tech and we know FFXIV uses a fork of the Luminous Engine that was used in FFXV, so there is a degree of assumption that it can be done, with hurdles, but has less of a deflection point imo.

It’s a bit difficult to achieve true individuality in character customizations given the limited options available. The only thing that sets one character apart from another is the hair variations, glamour variations and the coloring of both features, height, muscle tone, race. All of the smaller details that fine-tune the uniqueness of a character have been overlooked and I think it all deserves a revisit for the sake of giving players a more personalized character with diversity in their features. :cool:

I love the Miqote race but I hate pretty much all the hairstyles available to them. I love the Aura but I hate that I can't change the horns independently from the face like I can with the tail. I hate that things like eyes, lips, nose are all tied to only face and also can't be changed independently. I jump between looks a lot because I generally don't like certain aspects that come with it just because there's no option to change them. >:T

I'd mostly like to see options separated from each other better. Don't tie our options for beards, scars and similar facial features, or Au Ra horns to what face we select.

E.g. In the Highlander case, there is a selection already for beards, but each face has three completely different beard styles available (along with a no beard option in each case). Let us combine any of the 12 beard styles we like with any of the faces. (This wasn't even obvious when creating a character, since we get to the face selection first, then when we get to the beard selection it looks like a straightforward four choices. I wouldn't have even realized there were other beards available if I hadn't been going back and forth, from faces to beards and back to faces again. I'm pretty sure the same goes for scars, etc, on all races.)

It would be nice, sadly the servers are made of melted potatoes, pretty sure they can't handle more than what they already are dealing with.

To be fair, tying certain facial features like beards and shit to different faces and races is so obnoxiously boneheaded, what is even the point? It doesn't add anything, it just pisses everyone off.

I want them to fix up the character creator, but I really wouldn't count on it.

This is just a rumor. Square Enix doesn’t disclose this kind of information to us.

More options would be a welcome addition. Though i don't see it happening until we get a revamp on the scale of 1.0 to 2.0 and that i feel wont come around again (i want to be wrong here, maybe 6.0 or 7.0?).

Lastly many think more sliders are the answer though i have played many mmorpg's and the things i have seen have left me haunted, to say the least questioning humanity as a whole...

Sliders are fine but the scale needs to stay within reason, people can't be trusted with to much power.

^ That last one doesn’t look too bad.. But yes. Some of us can’t be trusted with that much power.

I would just be happy to have more face models and facial part pieces to play with. No reason to overhaul the whole system when all it needs is more options.
