Huh, you're right! I checked aswell and I most have indeed entered that information at some point too... it just has been over 4 years since then.
Strikes me a bit weird that they were asking for it (or not, from a marketing perspective, I guess)

I always run into women in MMOs. That said, they are vastly outnumber by the men, and there have been many times I've assumed before finding out otherwise. It just tends to come up when you talk about your personal life as you get to know people. That said, I don't think it really matters.
You want to check a game called "VR chat", the things that happen over there will blow your mind.
Its really a interesting case of males pretending to be females in the game, why none made such a study about it yet, lol. Like seriously, across my mmorpg 13 years experience i have meet so many g.i.r.ls, and they acted like ones, writing, caring like wat. It happen even on a much bigger scale in times where not many had a micro to talk on teamspeak or skype.
A lot of males played females, luring male players to abusing them for taxi or free items, but things were getting weird when it was getting more "emotional" and they were pretending to be a female for attention and so. I actually know a guy, who was doing it for many years, and never got expossed, because he had some valid excusses or etc, the weirdest part was he was acting like it, not for "material" benefits, but for the so called RolePlay and he felt much better than playing and being "male" in the game.
Thats a serious thread for some good studies right there.
Honestly (though this was in FF11 not 14) I met more harassment playing a male character from other female players than males when on a female character (tho I did pick a race that was played by male players mostly lol) On here I never met any...horn-dogs, on ether of my characters.
I just let people assume unless I'm asked.
I main a male now cause i mained a female in ff11...and plus I also like buff (and lizard in the case of my other alt) men, so why not play as a big swole cinnamon bun of a man?
Based on my subjective experiences, about half of the guys I've met play guys, and the other half play girls. Many of the girls I've met play girls, and fewer of us play guys (me being one of them).
But really, it's kind of irrelevant to know off-hand.
I take long breaks and every time I come, I find different type of people or I start to interact with different type of people. There are times that I just met guys. a large proportion are guys playing female characters and a small of them playing male character. Then I take a break and come back to meet people doing the opposite. Another times, most of the players I meet are just girls and play female characters and vice versa.
I would say it is a 50/50 because not everybody play in the same hours as everybody and the same days. But yeah. There are girls playing this games. It is just nonsense the whole g.i.r.l.s because then I could say there are g.u.y.s. (guess what that means :P)
@Nedkel I got a similar experience. I met a guy who confessed that he would play and "roleplay" ( and excuse cuz it was still him) as a girl because he noticed that it was the only way he could control his temper. He was a guy when he played savage, but he would pretend to be a girl when he was not playing to control himself and enjoy the game. That type of people needs a professional help more than continue playing.
In regard to the whole, guys play female characters to take advantage and get items and currency in game, yes I believe it. I got many friends doing that. I don't understand how other guys felt for it. I even heard guys believing such a lie for a whole year. A person needs to ask, if they get emotional involve, the other party what is real. If they don't have proof then it means there is something they are hiding (for many reasons)
There are actually studies regarding players gender, just type "players gender in MMO research" in Google and you'll have plenty. For example Looking for Gender: Gender Roles and Behaviors Among Online Gamers, Debunking the Gender Performance Gap in Two Massively Multiplayer Online Games or this and a lot more.
But what actually I found the most interesting - and this thread confirms it - is "Female video game players now comprise 40% of all players, and women over 18 make up more of the game-playing population than do males under 17. Yet, studies of men and women report both genders believe that computer games are a ‘‘particularly masculine pursuit" (citation)
"Women's increased presence, however, has not been enthusiastically embraced in gaming culture. They are still perceived as minorities, with different or inferior gaming-related motivation, expertise, level of participation, preferences, and genre choice than male players " (citation)
I am a true female playing a male character and it’s hilariously entertaining listening to other people responses when I go on voice when them.
To add: On a random party to Shinryu Ex with friends, i offhandedly commended "Huh, there's only two male characters in this party" And one of them replied "Ironically, both the male characters are played by IRL females." There were four irl male and females in that party at that time.
Female player with a female character here. I think my FC has fairly even amounts of male and female players - though I haven't gone around asking everyone what they are. Unless they say something about it, I just assume people are their in-game gender.
I made two alt characters (to play the first part of the game in each city) - one is male, and it felt a bit odd when I realised that people might be perceiving me as a male player because of it. I haven't played enough as him to notice being treated differently to my other characters - though I haven't really interacted with anyone on either alt.
Most Roe players are know are either
1. Gay.
2. Super into bara which may or may not also include #1 because there are a fair amount of women who like bara.
3. A troll.
4. A teenage boy(or a grown man who acts like one) who wanted to play something that wasn't a "sissy" who is in for a wild time when they meet 1, 2, and 3.
But anyways, I'm a girl and I only play as a girl. I chose Elezen because I like being a little weird looking. There's plenty of girls who play, but a lot of them tend to keep to themselves or their own circle of friends to try to avoid harassment. I still encounter a fair amount of dudes who don't think any girls play at all. That rhetoric doesn't usually bother me, they'd just be making fools of themselves irl. But I have a fair amount of transgirl friends in the game and the "ur not a real girl!!1!!" spiel takes on a very different context with them. It ain't cool.
It was supposed to be funny? Because it sounded like generalization to me.
I've never seen 4. 3 are immature, seen way too many joke Roes. 1 and 2 is mostly truth, I know a few women who play male Roe because they like the muscular aspect.
\\
That's literally the joke. And this is coming from a gay man.
Here, I'll just give you an example thread from Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comme...ros_out_there/
I play a male Hyur midlander.
I have always played a male in most games. I'm 100% straight but the character also looks like me.
I had a female alt in WoW and in RIFT too and while I almost never played them, whenever I did I got the horny teenager wanting to erp most of the times, I always told that I was a guy and I got instantly blacklisted for some reason ... :/ And here I am trying to be as friendly as possible.
Anyhow, that's something I don't have to worry about when I play my main male character. It's not the reason why I play a male but it's a nice bonus anyhow.
Male player here. I usually talk with other player refering to what their character gender is unless they correct me (irl gender shouldn't matter).
I'm a long time mmorpg player and have played both male and female characters. I tend to chose the gender based on the type of character I want to play. Females get the show on magicians/healers/archers while male get the tanks/fighters types. Assassin/thieves types are left to whatever I have less off. For FFXIV however, I started as a female Miqo'te playing a Monk as it was what felt better on my idea of the job with the options I had (I don't like how most men look like, only Roe would fit nicely for a very bulky tank). When I switched to main tank, I changed to female Roe, didn't went male only because I didn't want to pay for a name change and the look was good enough for what I wanted :)
But with HW and the Au Ra, I switched to male day 1 and changed name.
When playing female characters I got some guys trying to flirt and give me items/money and I usually correct them when it happens (and they get very disapointed) but it was on very few occasions. Maybe 2 or 3 times in all those years only, got lucky I guess.
So far, most people I met where male, but the people I got closer to and who became mmo players friends tend to be 60-40 with a majority of females (though FFXIV made that trend come closer to 50/50 but females are still a majority).
I also had a strange discussion with a female player that really thought I was a girl and started a more private conversation about girly stuff. I tried to made her realise I was male without saying it out straight away but that had the opposite effect instead. So from then I try to let the other know if I sense any risk of confusion being possible.
I'm a female player that plays both male and female hyurs (because hyur race master race, right?). I don't usually tell people my gender unless they ask. Just something I got used to over the years.
I find, not just in this game but other games, we are just less forward about gender. IMO I just play the game to enjoy it with others, gender be damned. XP Tho there are quite a few girls in our FC now it is nice to have the girl talk back XP
If you would have continued reading, you'd have noticed that I said 90% of my female friends. That means my friends. We are not friends so I was not actually referring to you.
Just because I have just 10% female friends playing female character, it doesn't mean everybody is the same. As I said on another post. I believe there is a 50/50 chances to meet a girl playing a male character or female character. Everybody has their preferences.
I'm male! I often play both female and male character's. I don't hide what gender I am in real life regardless of what I play.
I'm a guy that's currently playing a female character, wanted a change of pace since my first account got banned for.....reasons.
Edit: Protip - If you play on PS4 your account is directly tied to your psn name, so if you get banned from psn and forced to change our name recovering your account from Square is near impossible. Get ready to make a new account and buy the game all over again.
