If the game would go FTP i would probably still play since I enjoy aspects of the game still. But I wouldn't be surprised we got lesser patches, like every 6 months.

Continuing this would still require further development of content, albeit cosmetic, for a game they supposedly cannot continue to develop new content for due to the foundation of the game being based on PlayStation 2 devkits (the number of which were dwindling even after they went out of their way to buy up as much stock as they could to continue developing as far as they had). Even overlooking that I can only imagine the mess it would be turning a page of the Square Enix Online Store into an expansive, F2P/B2P level cash shop for one game, seeing as this method basically would require registering a code to your FFXI service for every individual item purchased, and Bahamut help you on any expendable items.
Should NEVER be free to play.... How do you keep the Devs interested in making something for free?
Please no thanks.
I thought retainer boosts were already a thing?
Game should never go f2p especially considering it at the highest amount of players it has ever been. I can see the game only getting better with the new game modes they are adding in.
I will repeat what i had said in a similar post, our sub money funds SE other game projects so very doubtful it would ever go F2P.
And Yoshi may have made a statement but i also find it hard to believe that the majority of players would want it F2P
Yes i agree. My main point is if they see they can make more money by micro trans then they will look into F2P business model for FFXIV.
Please note, i'm not supporting a F2P model but i work with business developments and I can see why they might want to go with a different model if they can make more money cause in the end it's all about revenue
people don't realize that FF14 going F2P will not be free or less expensive for the same experience- players will end up playing MORE to get SAME or LESS level of access and content
No.
I hope FFxiv never be F2P.
WoW is 12 year old don't be F2P
In the long run a sub bring more money and a stable income. Games who started with a sub only went f2p because the sponsors wanted their money now.
sub = stable income = easier to calculate with it for other games over some years
f2p = many up and downs in the income = harder to calculate with it
F2P if 80% of the player base want it.
I currently thing yes. if it went F2P it would be 80% of the player base. But not 80% of the current player base as a large amount of the current player base LOVE the SUB MODEL That is why they are here and likely came from FFXI or WOW.
Yes they would get a few whales. But over all happiness of the game current player base would go down.
I have played F2P games in the past, in ALL F2P I've played I've spent $4.99, And that game me an extra 2 weeks of enjoyment out of the game. I would move on to NON mmos. If FFXIV one of the last good MMOs went F2P.
So rather then SE getting $150 a year from me, they may not get any or very little. As Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider 2. I got on Steam sales for under $30 total.
Let's just get rid of that idea. It won't happen and also due to the fact that as someone who has played many F2P games..the communities in those games are generally horrid. It is terrible to see a person PK someone over and over again while screaming racial slurs at them.
Rather no go F2P... Wasn't 1.0 F2P? really bad?
Before I get eaten I'm no Legacy player so I don't know how it work back then.
I did watch thos, I just never thought to ask if it was F2P xD
Can we just stop talking about that nonsense pls? ^^
I actually think it's good to talk on forums like this to show an overwhelmingly anti-f2p stance. After all, they talk about "80%" players and short of drawing tenuous conclusions from subscribe/unsubscribe data, there really isn't a place for them to "hear" players' voices other than the forums. They could issue an optional survey on the acct mgmt page or the loader but nobody would take it. If they made it involuntary people would complain about extra time to login. And any survey whatsoever would probably 1) get overwhelmed by troll votes and 2) alarm the populace. So no, I don't mind people asking here so I can say NOPE. (I know the forums are only a fraction of the loudest players but it's at least a free way for us to dissent, since we know they do have people reading the threads.)
let's be real here. If SE is considering F2P, the players will not dictate whether it happens or not.
Their wallets will.
If the sub numbers are not high enough, the consideration for F2P is made by the higher ups, not Yoshi solely.
If they think they can make more money with a f2p or b2p model, they will go that way.
Would I quit over that ? Nope.
SE are not stupid to make this game f2p so that i will have same fate as GW2 boring unrewarding garbage.
That sure makes a lot of sense... To decrease the price for subs while making some of the stuff that is paid free, and also translate the game to a lot of other languages. That makes total financial sense.
And no thanks, I would hate to leave FF14 because it went pay to win.
Not really F2P, but extended free trial until quality reach standard level.

isnt ff11 still going and sub based game?
I wish FF11 was f2p as I don't mind playing it sometimes for nostalgia reasons. Game has no future as no incoming expansions said so by SE yet people are still paying the sub for it. Boggles my mind.
I remember this all being said about jump potions, they would never do it, it would make all their older content obsolete, would have an influx of players no knowing how to play their jobs, its not going to happen. Then one dark and stormy night Yoshi-P mentioned they might consider putting in jump potions if there was a need for it, then POOF! the next expansion had jump potions. I suspect the exact same thing will happen this year, that will be the big reveal at fan fest, the hybrid F2P model and the beginning of the end of a sub. They have already set the ground work by nerfing to the ground the vet rewards and discontinuing them. I don't think they will go straight up F2P right away but they will have some form of it where maybe the game is free up to the end of Heavensward or ARR or something like that or there is some bonus you get for paying a sub that f2p players will not have.
I don't want to be right but if we get out of all three fan fests with no mention of some form of free to play model then I will happily eat my words. Please SE, prove me wrong but it sure looks like the writings on the wall...
Technically the Jump Potions already existed in the Chinese version of the game so it wasn't something that was randomly thought up. Yoshi also has no control over what goes on to the MogStation so if the people in charge think something should go on there (because its profitable), then that's what they'll do. Making the game F2P however would take a lot more planning as there is a lot more profit involved, but hey if the game goes down that path in China then you never know. But for now I think we'll be sticking to a sub based model, with FFXI being a good example of this after all that time.
Honestly at 5.0 they really need to do a few things if they want to make some proper money.
1. Some content/instance/zone etc. that allows people to try level 80 jobs before they invest a jump potion in a job that they are stuck with for tons of hours
2. Better job potion and levelling potions e.g. reduced Stormblood potion costs and/or better pricing for ONE potion to be ready for 5.0
3. New jobs have jump potions so existing players can create alts on new jobs to have a different experience.
4. Stop messing around and deal with the 2.X quests. either 1) shorten it by 75% or 2) make everything to 2.55 part of the free trial.
