I can't imagine a more stressful minefield of nonsense that would be the implementation of children in this game.
Children ???? How can we fight if we have to take care of them ? D: Give them to Khloe until you are done as warrior of light ? :P
My squadron already feels like I'm raising children. Disappointing children. Any extra retainers I may give in and pay for will also feel like multiple mouths to feed.
If someone does come up with a plausible adoption system, with stats and whatever else, would there be some sort of consequences if the child was not taken care of? Ah, I can see it now... "Hello, this is my eldest, Don't Tell Me How To Virtually Parent. And, their younger sibling, You Don't Pay My Sub."
Maybe we could help out the orphanage more and directly do quests to help the child we chose in the beginning. Like making toys for them and stuff like that and have some cute cutscenes were they are happy. Maybe over the time when we help the child (or children if we can help more than one) we will learn more about their past, hobbies and things like that and form a bond with them, without going through all the adoption stuff.
We already have children in the game to look after.
They're called Lalafell
We can get childrens if ERP is forbidden. If people start to ERP with childrens SE could be sued.
I'm still for using Ragnarok Online's system of adopting other player characters and turning them small. Maybe lalafell sized/ shaped, but any race (so SE'd not need to make special armor in theory). If players got divorced, the adopted player character would return to normal size, as if nothing ever happened.
Correct me if I am wrong, but ERPing is already a punishable offense? If you do it privately, I doubt anyone would report you, but publicly leaves you open for reporting and having GM intervention.
There is nothing directly forbidding it in game (there IS something directly forbidding it on the forums though), but there are rules that are so general that any kind of such role play may get you punished if reported, whether or not a typical person would consider it "fine". Basically, if it's not something you would be allowed to say in front of a kid that's 8-10 years old without odd looks from people around, it's something you can be punished for, going by the rules set out by Square Enix.
Clearly, vast majority of players cross that line on a regular basis, so really, unless you're pushy and excessive, chances are you would come out of it without a scratch. But hey, they need to cover themselves.
So putting the actual idea aside for one minute, what exactly would the gameplay benefits of having a child be?
There's gotta be a reason for it and a tangible gameplay mechanic behind it, otherwise what's the point? You get more of an immersive experience from housing shop NPCs.
How would this even work? Just some random NPC that sits in your house? Unless they actually do something it'd be rather pointless and I wouldn't feel any connection to just some npc who's in my house like that.
I don't really see any way this would work or how they could implement such a system, honestly something like this is better suited to games like The Sims and not an MMO, no offense.
While it is a good and interesting idea yes, given this is SE were talking about and past experiences tell me they couldn't do this without it being a major burden on game play. I think that's why a lot are saying "this is not the Sims" due to the fact this is SE and is no doubt in my mind they would make it so raising and caring for a child in game would be a game all in itself due to heavy focus on lore and realism.
No thank you I don't need any more children real or imagined. I raised two in real life and am happy that they are out in the world on their own.
I can't believe this thread is still going, but you know what, okay, I really enjoy franchise that have life sim aspects, particular those of the Farming variety.
In those games, having a child is just part of the chain of events you go through via the relationship systems. One of the goals is to woo your choice of bachelor or bachelorette, marry them, then start a family. The different ways events play out, the work put into garnering affection, etc, is arguably half the gameplay.
The reason why it never crosses the line into creepy territory is in large part due to the fact that these are single player games meant to fulfill a completely different kind of escapist fantasy. It's about making the work of making friends, lovers, family an absolute breeze. Even the rancher side is made wildly simple.
While there is some overlap with the crafting/gathering systems being way to make money, FFXIV serves a different audience of players.
Tomadachi Life and the Sims do it differently in that part of the entertainment comes from wild scenarios you get from putting versions of anyone into an house and watching the magic unfold. It can inevitably lead to romance, and you have different levels of influence upon how things unfold. FFXIV can't do that with real people.
Basically, the idea of expanding the marriage system beyond the cool items and convenient teleport to forcing you to deal with the responsibility of family jumps off the rails of what kind of game FFXIV is trying to be.
Even this fancy "adopt a player" system smacks of a sort of mentorship program, and not the RP being asked for.
The thought of Lala's mating and producing offspring will attract a wild Chris Hansen if you're not careful there... :P
So what's stopping me from forcing my child to only wear a Pig Suit while feeding it nothing but Sachertorte and Triple Cream Coffee?
Asking for a friend. /s
I think children have nothing to do with marriage, kids have everything to do with making sure genes are passed on. Marriage doesn't have children as an important part of it(though I am sure some marriages seem to look this way), Marriage is about many things, but kids are not one of them, it's more so a pledge to someone, religion made this more appropriated for making kids a part of it, I will state though you are entitled to your opinion/faith/belief.
Also unless I'm going to get Nipples, a booty and a crotch related to the Sex of my character, I truely do see how we will ever have kids, not would I want them thinking daddy ain't gonna come home for a copious amount of time nor is Father from his own escapades, same goes for waifus and wives, etc
I think there would need to be two different systems for this kind of thing to work in this game.
1. A family bonding similar to a wedding for the purposes of adopting other players into your family. This would let the players RP whatever they want...like they already do really.
2. An extension of Khloe's system where we can adopt children and be a mentor or big brother/sister kind of person to them. Maybe they can set up shop as an interactable NPC similar to house vendors. (They sell something but have a stock appearance you can't change) as opposed to retainers who have a customizable appearance.
Also, not really a system but it would be nice to have NPC families and children walking around the housing wards to make them feel a little more alive.
In a single player you are limited on the actions that you can do with the children (including if the child is the protaganist), in a MMORPG we have more freedom, from dressing the character in a certain way to doing other stuff like ERP. Like I have said before, I dont mind seeing them and I can understand that some players have the need to want to roleplay a ingame family, but untill they add playable teen/child characters (Lalafellins are not children) I dont think we will see player characters interacting with their own kids.
Thinking about it, if we forget about all the creepy stuff that could happen, there's actually another thing that prevents this idea from being possible (unless you don't care about immersion).
You don't age in this game. Story/world-wise, I don't think we've even gone through a year yet. Also, child NPC's that have been around since ARR are still children. It'd be kinda jarring if your child could (rapidly) age while everyone around them stayed the exact same age.
And now my questions for you: For what use do you want have babys? Do you want to have them as minions? Why would you have a baby in a game anyway? The house has a use for me, leveling the chocobo, gardening which results in stuff to feed the chocobo or minions
Sorry for me it has no use and it would just take recourses away that the developers could use for actual content.
This is not Minecraft.
So all y'all better get it out of your heads of having any kind of gathering or crafting system because it'll never-
Oh, wait. We do have those things. It's almost as though this game is flexible enough to have a variety of different features and activities aside from the core combat! Isn't that something?
I only thought it would be a fun feature that would give being in a marriage something more, since there is already a marriage system. No, I do not want them as minions; that would seem kinda weird in my mind, but I'm not sure. o:
I was hoping people would brainstorm and give some thoughts on how children could be useful in the game, and I was hoping people who posted would actually give some solutions to the problems they present; not just the problems. I didn't realize this would be a pool of negativity. If you or anyone else have an idea on what use they could be, then please share. Other than that, I made this thread hoping to get more ideas.
OP you asked for children in the game and a lot of people just said their opinion about this. You will always have people agreeing or disagreeing with you in a forum and sometimes one has to accept that maybe people dont just like the idea. Also not really sure why having them as a minion would be weird but them turning into another retainer is not? I mean you would basically do child labor with that.
I am not for this idea yet I gave another possible way with helping the orphanage and getting to know those children better but I dont believe that we will ever have our own children in this game.
The idea that because it doesn't appeal to YOU it shouldn't be considered is pretty darn selfish. It's a neat idea and it makes the marriage thing a little more complex and have other attractions. That should be enough for the suggestion. The amount of people coming in and telling the OP that their idea is BAD is unwarranted and unneeded. If you don't like it, it's very easy to say "I would not enjoy this feature and would not use it". There you go, your vote is counted against without any sort of negativity. Nobody is saying "put things on hold to work on this!". It's a feature idea and easy to vote for or against or make polite suggestions either way. I have no "eternal bonding" partner and probably never will in this game, but the idea has merit and is an interesting thread to pursue. Civil discussions are cool!
I love this idea and would expand on it. We could take our little charges to appropriate sight seeing locations for rewards. It would encourage players to revisit areas and appreciate the world that was created for us. The child taking damage for whatever reason would insta fail you and you're locked out until the next reset.
Having the orphans go on field trips and seeing them randomly in the world is also a neat idea. It would turn into a new hunt. I know a lot of players enjoyed seeing the girls at costa del sol during the summer festival.
Ok this idea I can get behind.I wasn't big on needing to be married to have kids, much less babies on top of that but adopting Khloe orphans is something that I would encourage the implementation. It doesn't even need full time adoption; you could just take them out for an hour or day. Depending on what job you main, you could teach them the basics of the job. Kid doesn't like fighting? No problem. Teach them to be self sufficient with a DoH or DoL job( imagine teaching one how to fish).
It could be done like a series of beast tribe quest where everytime you reach a bonding level, they age a bit more and become more proficient at their job, giving you rewards at the same time. The final bonding level gives you the choice to encourage the kid to go out into the world and make a name for themselves (you'll never see them again but you'll have the option of adopting another one) or stay and keep an eye on them.
The whole thing would take some refining but that's my ideal version of this suggestion.
True Endgame, change diapers minigame...
god no. I wouldn't touch this with a 50-foot pole. I think some need to go outside the game and try real life instead : there's enough mundane crap to worry about there already, don't need it in game as well.
Ideas you people come up with are getting weirder... keep them coming!
This is just... no. God no. If you want a childlike character to go fetch stuff for you and carry you inventory crap... Make a Lala retainer.
if you want kids, go play Skyrim and adopt some there.
Multiple reason why this will never happen:
1) Pedophillia from people (as much as we might not believe it's there, some people are screwed up mentally)
2) Child labor (by that I mean slaves)
3) Basically ingame pets you don't feed and neglect the whole time you're logged off
Why are we having this discussion instead of adding actual content to the game? Go play Sims if you're interested. Go play Skyrim and adopt kids. You can even set fire to them and they won't get mad!
