What game did you play before FFXIV and do you miss it?

Played WoW for 10 years. Met my now IRL husband on that game, and had some really good times. However.......... after several years of starting a new expansion, then quitting 2 months later because it just wasn't the same as it used to be for me, Stormblood has finally put the final nail in that coffin for me. I'm never looking back!

I play multiple MMOs simultaneously. I very rarely fully quit an MMO, though one that I have quit irrevocably is TERA. I miss what it was pre-f2p (loved the combat), but when they changed the costume and dye system, I quit and never looked back.

Right now, I am playing WildStar, WoW, and FFXIV. Occasionally we poke at GW2 (trying to work through story there, though the whole mastery restrictions are wearing on me), and I've still got Rift, BnS, and Revelation Online installed on the off-chance I get a bug to play.

Whenever I play FFXIV, the things I miss most from other MMOs are the costume and dye systems, the fact that I don't have to worry about inventory space, housing, double jump, open zone design, and WildStar's style of raid boss encounters (soooo fun and challenging). xD

FFXI I miss the community and the open world dungeons.

Before I started playing FF14 I want to say it was Wizadry Online and Shin Megami Tensei Online. I recall both very highly, the fact they are both shut down, I guess due to poor numbers. I'd say they were both hardcore mmorpgs in a way, skill over button mashing. Granted I also started in the closed beta of ARR so to far for me to really remember. I know I did end up buying and playing FF11 for about a month with my brother but at that time I think it was also a ghost town in the beginning areas and he eventually quit and I got bored from playing solo.

FFXI, doesn't make sense cause it's still there but it is not the same as 5 or so years ago. Call it rose tinted glasses, but I have yet to experience a community like that. Lots of people talking or shouting, even if you weren't in their linkshell. Was it the inability to be independent or the slower combat? Idk but always had people wanting to help and talk. If it got a graphic and UI update, I'd probably still play it a bunch, but I am spoiled with better graphics and modern UI since joining the PC master race.

I've played several MMOs in my time but the one I played before FFXIV was RuneScape. I don't miss it tbh. FFXIV does everything I like in RuneScape, but better (except for the limited housing of FFXIV, RuneScape was unlimited provided you had membership, and if your membership lapsed you just couldn't enter your house but it never got deleted). Only problem with RuneScape's housing system was it was tied to the Construction skill. Which was just a GP sink like no other.

Blade and Soul – I miss the fighting game action and equal opportunity hypersexualized graphics, which was done right unlike that garbage that was Scarlet Blade. I do not miss the lag, and the abrupt grind wall toward end game.

Tera - I got two classes to 50++ then stopped playing because I didn't have any friends to enjoy the game with. It is very pretty and ages gracefully. Alas there wasn't much to keep my attention.

Champions online – I miss the customization, no game has done it better, I do not miss everything else.

DCUO – Before it became the garbage it is today, I loved the travel powers and action combat. The customization was nowhere on the level of Champions online, but man was it still fun collecting pieces for your super hero costume.

Final Fantasy 11 – I miss the old community mostly. I went back once, and the game is so old now and the players left over are not very friendly anymore. So yeah I don’t miss it as much as have fond memories of it.

WildStar – Funny, goofy, sci fi, awesome production values. I don’t miss the bullet hell like combat and the sometimes frustrating action management. The character classes never really clicked with me either.

The Secret World – I miss the modern lovecraftian stories, I miss having to dig through online websites for information (it wasn’t wiki stuff either.) The atmosphere was awesome. I don’t miss the graphics and I don’t miss the gameplay all that much. The new one, The Secret World Legends is repackaged watered down garbage.

GW2 – I pop in now and again just to look at my cool as hell cabbage elementalist! No other game has offered me the ability to play as a plant person. That is the only reason it stays installed on my PC. I haven’t played it for a while and even when the expansion comes out im pretty sure it wont be enough to pull me away from here. Still I have the least bad stuff to say about GW2. Oh, best pvp for an MMO, ever. I liked it more than Blade and Soul.

PSO, PSO2, MHO, Vindictus – I all rank as instanced beat em ups, and like diablo, only hold my interest for so long.

So we come to Final Fantasy 14. The pros outweigh the cons for me, I have hit a few annoying things here and there but the community is generally nicer than most. There are a ton of things to do in the form of minigames and other time killers. The combat, while simplistic, really shines in the more complex dungeons. There are plenty of dress up options both modest and not. The Story telling is what I have come to expect from a Final Fantasy title. Lastly the Soundtrack ranks up there with my top 3 favorite soundtracks for an MMO ever. (GW2 and Granado Espada being the other 2.)

Before FF14, I mostly played WOW and Guild Wars 2.

WOW: It was fun for a while, but eventually it just started feeling very stale and lacked any potential. I don't miss it.

Guild Wars 2: I loved vanilla Guild Wars 2. There was just so many good things about it for me. Then Heart of Thorns put a very heavy emphasis on grouping in order to progress, and that was a huge turnoff for me. That and the mastery grinding. I miss my guild, but I probably won't go back.

I've soloed all of HoT, and I'm not very good at soloing in GW2 really. The mastery grind is still there, but at least the story is no longer liked behind certain masteries, although having them does help make the fights easier. I'm only about 13 mastery myself, since I pretty much stopped playing when I found out the story was locked behind masteries.

Elsword and no. That game is pretty bad in my opinion.
The PvP's unbalanced due to the fact that most of the players bought items from the cash shop. Not to mention how overpowered certain characters are since skills aren't modfied for PvP.
The PvE was boring for me.
There is no character creation.

Since the game is based off of the manga. You have to choose which character you want to play as. Sure, later you can choose what class they end up as. But that and buying costumes from the cash shop is pretty much it for character customization.

And you have to buy their in-game currency to be able to get four more keys for your hotbar.(You only have four skills to use if you don't buy it.)
No. I don't miss that game.

This is how it was before I quit. Somethings could be different now. But I'm not taking any chances.

That's what turned me off of Elsword, there was another one before I recall that was much better in terms of not restricting those who do not pay.

Edit: Did a search, think it was Grand Chase I was thinking of. Recall the archer and mage females but the swordsman this time was a female instead of the male. Though I think she was added to Elsword too.

I tend to play multiple mmos at once but FFXIV is the only one I'm playing at the moment which says a lot about how much I love this game.

The last one I played was ESO which I do still hop on every now and again but now that I've had a taste of a decent mmo lol it just doesn't hold the same appeal. It's only plus is that it's all voiced.

I played a bunch of F2P korean MMOs and I don't miss them at all.
The most notable ones are Grand Fantasia, Dragon Nest (this one was kinda cool actually) and ELOA.
They weren't THAT bad but they were ultimately just out to get your money and most of the community was really bad, also they don't know how difficulty curve works at all, especially ELOA.

I also used to play a lot of LoL and the reasons I quit should be fairly obvious for anyone who's played it for more than 2 hours

FFXI was my very first MMO, and I started FFXIV 1.0 (and by extension ARR) as it was FFXI's spiritual successor. And no I don't really miss it, as I've never really left FFXI (apart from occasional one or two week lapses in subscription due to bills taking priority), I just enjoy FFXIV far far more, as FFXIV is everything I wanted in FFXI (that and my FFXI friends and family moved to FFXIV with me ;)). FFXI will still hold a special place in my heart for me though, as among other things I met my boyfriend there. :)

Apart from FFXI I also tried other MMOs like WoW and The Old Republic, but never enjoyed them the same as I enjoyed FFXI and now FFXIV (although being a FF fangirl does have something to do with that I guess ;)).

I miss the healers from WoW because they had actual rotations and weren't expected to stand around DPSing 80% of the time.

GW2. I miss aspects of it (the wardrobe, crafting inventory, jumping physics [though even they could be improved]) and so on.
But the game was never what I wanted it to be, nor was it what I feel they promoted it to be.


I still go back from time-to-time to unlock new living world packs, but it's been a while since I've returned to play in any significant way.
There's been enough new content and maps added that I should probably give it another go, but since HoT hit, the game really seemed to devolve into "Do the newest thing we added over and over again and hope that enough other players are doing it too!" so I don't know that it's worth it.
Was miffed enough about the map-wide success rate that the expansion added since trying to organize an entire zone has never worked (even the world bosses still had a lot of problems related to this), but when trying to do some of the achievements for the "Current Events" they added, it just got to be too annoying. Either there weren't enough bodies there, or the event would scale terribly and make the achievement conditions near impossible, so that really put me off.
Last time I really played was the Bloodstone Fen chapter, and it just seemed so incredibly grindy and dull I lost interest again pretty quick.

Actually somehow managed to miss that the new expansion was coming. New specs seem... questionable (or rather, kind of forced) except for Deadeye (about damned time). And Spiritbeast finally gives a large part of the ranger community what we wanted, but in a very... odd sort of package. Might still give it a go though.

Honestly, the biggest hurdle to getting back into it in any serious way to me (content aside) would just be the control scheme. I just really don't like playing with Mouse+KB these days.

Before FFXIV? Dude (or dudette), I have been playing this game for over 3 years, I don't remember what I played right before I started it. This is my first MMO too.

However, there are 2 games that call out to me repeatedly and I was playing them before Stormblood hit. These being Dark Souls 3 and Final Fantasy 15. And more recently, Final Fantasy 12 on PS4. It is a struggle to get things done in the 14th and play the others but that just makes things more interesting.

Played Dragon Nest for 6 years. Only thing I missed from that game was the PvP, because it was mechanically deep, but the class imbalance became too much and the PvE became too P2W once awakenings hit in 93 cap. Was considering Kritika but decided against it, because I love FFXIV too much.

So no, not really. It's FFXIV and JRPG's for me from now on.

FFXI was my first MMO, and the one I played before FFXIV 1.0 came out years ago. Do I miss it? Yes...or so I would like to say. Truth is, I think I miss the innocent newbie days of just playing for the fun of it more then FFXI it's self. Back then I just logged on and did whatever and had a blast. Now I spend all my time stressing about my gear stats. Worrying my rotation isn't good enough. Or reading up on every fight in the game so I don't make any mistakes. Looking at the me of the past vs. the me of today, I envy the past me so much. /sigh

Fiesta. Healers being encouraged to DPS was what made me fall so hard for ffxiv after. That and the noncritical cash shop.

I recently went back to Elsword for a bit cause I sorta missed the silliness. It is still like this and even woooorse now since Transcended upgrades happened.

As for the topic, Used to play Shin Megami Tensei Online, was so much fun! But then Atlus took the game back and during the big server shuffle, my account got lost to the ether in the shuffle :( all that hard work went poof into smoke...then the game died a year later.

I also played Warframe for a couple years, but I stopped playing for a while because a few of the updates were just upsetting me. (I'm lookin' at you star map revamp!!!) But recently I have been getting back into it and it's been a really good refreshing break from FFXIV.

thou it doesn't count as an "MMO" due to the story/campain being Solo-only & the multiplayer being for side quests and a sub-endgame dungeon my previous game was White Knight Chronicles 1/2, played it for 2 years straight, I don't miss it but if I ever do I'll go dig out my PS3 & the game... thou the thought that a) the server for multiplayer was shutdown & b) didn't like most of the "main cast" keeps me away anyway

GW2 and Tera were my main games with a WoW private server that I grabbed people from there and we raided here even today in FFXIV. I don't miss the private server but I miss Teras combat and tanking it was a freakin rush to perfect block everything, manage hate and DPS. Gw2 I miss their PvP quite a bit was fluid, and builds were based on what weapons you had equipped and of course open world PVP mmmm I miss that.

I did try Legion, gave it a fair shot as I love WoW but the raids were boring, class nerfs every month or so and the disregard to PvP was enough for me. The ONLY thing that I love about current WoW is the Mythic+ dungeon system and personal loot that goes along with it, if FFXIV could take that with the modifiers it's PVE content would be absolute.

Games I played before FFXIV:

Runescape: played for 10 years and still play it now so don't have to miss it, it's also pretty afkable that I play it the same time I'm playing FF :)

Aion: I miss my character and friends but I don't miss the game, once it went free to play and pay to win I lost interest, tried to play it again about a year ago and it was terrible.

WoW: don't really miss it, I much prefer the community in FFXIV.

Final Fantasy XI.

Don't really miss it, it was fine during it's prime, but it's past it's time.

I don't miss the gear swapping at all.

I've played a lot of other games before coming to FF14, but WoW is the only other one I've ever stuck with for more than a month or two at a time.

And I don't miss WoW. The game had gotten so dull to me that I was literally only logging in to attend my raids, and nothing else. And the raids weren't fun enough to justify maintaining a sub.

WoW, GW2, Tera, to name a few.

I miss parts of them, definitely. When I'm not just playing them instead, that is.

My first was probably Perfect World, like, over 7 or 8 years ago, then a slew of F2P MMOs but before XIV it would be Aion, I actually liked it and all but it got really...tiring, nah, don't really miss it, there are a FEW things I like from there (like the Songweaver but RDM kinda feelis like weaver used to) but don't really think I'll go back.

White knight chronicles 2 was my baby before the jerks shut it down, months later I played Tales of Xillia before 14 came out...I was almost done with xillia when 14 released...haven't touched it since.......

I played WoW for a number of years but quit after leveling Warlords of Draenor. Too many reasons as to why. I do miss the family and friends guild we had there but the kids, if you can call 20/30 somethings that, quit as well.

Tried Rift and at that time it was just too old fashioned graphically with no real story. I also played Wildstar for a short time and kind of liked the cartoon nature of it but it was devoid of groups. I played ESO through all of their Alpha and Beta tests and it too was hard to get folks into groups. I also thought it was very toxic like the WoW server I left. I don't really miss any of these.

I've been with FF XIV for a couple of years now. Besides the good story line and graphics I like the general decency of the player base. While I run into the occasional jerk for the most part players are friendly and willing to help. The only thing I have left is trying to get my family and friends guild to give the game a try so we can rebuild it as an FC.

GW2, Secret world, Firefall, and planetside 2.

I still check into GW2 to play the story but I have no real interest in the ascended gear grind.
Secret world kinda went through a reset and I have no real desire to play through all the noob areas again.
Firefall... died. which is a shame cause it was fun to run around and shoot stuff with friends in an open world.
Planetside never really caught me. I played and leveled for a while but since it was just a PVP grind and that's it, it was easy to drop.

I think the only MMO I really "miss" is Ragnarok online. I know it's still around but I used to be a part of a great Guild. We weren't really competitive in PVP events but we gathered for lots of self created stuff and it was fun to romp around the landscape and have adventures. Unfortunately those people have moved on to other games and i can't stand the late game grind, it's just too slow.

I have played several other MMOs before FFXIV - LOTRO, AoC, Secret World, SWTOR, etc.
Miss them? Why should I miss them? I still log in and play several of them from time to time. Those I do not play anymore, I stopped playing because I lost interest in them - so I do not miss those.

WoW, and nope. I canceled the sub shortly after picking this game up. It has a better community, gameplay, events and better looking gear. I got super tired of losing my legs for wearing a robe, that and also gear looked more like body paint half the time.

World of Warcraft. I played it from Burning Crusade onward and it got me through some very dark times in my life. An era of sorrow and regret.

Do I miss it? I have no words in elvish, entish, or the many tongues of man to express how much. But it's gone. Hardly the same game as it once was. My home is Eorzea now.

Used to play Destiny, til a friend brought me the game, been hooked since and no I don't miss Destiny as the grind on that game made you appreciate the grind on ffxiv at least if you don't get the drop you want you can retry unlike destiny you take what you are given whether you want it or not and have to wait til reset to try again. And them constantly nerfing the weapons to balance pvp affected single player as well so no don't miss it was thinking of getting Destiny 2 but my friends who still play destiny and tried d2 said it's more like a dlc than a new game so it's a wait and see this time. But I can't see myself leaving ffxiv

In order to current... Ever Quest, Dungeons and Dragons Online, WoW, LOTRO, STO/CO, WoW, FFXIV (Beta-Tester), SWToR, WoW, FFXIV..... Yes, I know WoW was listed 3 times, my friends kept talking me back saying its gotten better.. to them if they read this, "No, no it has not, you are all insane." Do I miss them? No, not really, Though I do have a LTS* with STO/CO so I do "Occassionally" log into those, but as for the rest, no.. especially NOT WoW, which is dead to me.

World of Warcraft. That game didn't have level sync, so no, I don't miss it (Picture nearly all instances, except maybe current-tier raids, being like the Castrum and Praetorium duties or the level 50/60 dungeons. No thank you.)

Dark Souls 3 ;-; such a fun game. Here to hoping Bloodborne 2 comes out eventually

I miss playing Aion. Loved combat to it and being able to fly and glide. it also had some really nice glamour's to it.

Before this: Mainly XI - Did play RO, Lineage II, Aion, WoW, GW2
Do I miss it: Sure do miss XI. However, everyone that I used to play with has since quit and gone to XIV and I'm now thankful for the cross-server because a few of them were on other servers.
