I usually use it when the boss is at 8~10% especially if its a new boss to me or the party keeps dying a lot/new to the mechanics cause i will regret using it if we wipe at 1~3% and healer cant lb3.

Sometimes I forget, sometimes there isn't any use for a caster LB and sometimes I'm just having too much fun with my rotation to interrupt it. Boss is at 15% and I have over 80 white and black mana? It's going to melt with or without LB.
last time i used sam lb3 half my team wiped on v3 like 10 seconds after. so i uh, wait until it's very low
There's usually another melee DPS or I'm playing as Bard.
Before the dungeon run I tell dps to use lb or I will use tank lb every time. And in all my runs dps use it
Because it's not necessary and I'd rather keep DPSing.
I always forget to LB, but that's because I tank more than I DPS, and since tanks never get to use theirs, well... xD
It's easy to forget about it once you finally get to DPS for a change ^^
There's no happy medium is the problem...
when i'm a dps I always seem to get paired with dps that waste it at the worst times. second boss of that dungeon at 4% hp go go melee lb.....
makes me just face palm when I could have used the caster lb on the last big set of trash....
or a melee that knocks out lb1 at the start of the last boss in sohm al hard the instant it dings. when ideally I would have used the caster one to kill the second set of adds instantly.....
any number of places where it would be great to use a lb. but I cant cos my fellow dps has wasted them...
When i'm a tank or healer though. total opposite. Hey guys LB3 is up you might wanna use it....
guys.... guys..... guyyyysssssss.
boss gets to 1% hp LIMIT BREAK and dead before the LB even hits....
did omega 1 earlier as still needed a drop from that one. lb3 was up for well over half that fight no one used it. honeslty could have used 2 of them.... in the end I did tank lb3 at 4% because it was obvious no one else was going to use it....
the healers lolled. the dps flipped a freakin lid cos I wasted it....
Does the boss jump regularly? If so, I won't LB since I do not know the timings for the jumps and will not risk a missed LB.
Is it a boss that has a tendency of near-wipe the raid when its on low HP? Something like Diabolos in Dun Scaith? Then I won't LB. Best saved for a Healer LB or the finishing blow. Not to mention using LB on a 24-main raid boss is equivalent to a tickle.
Is it a 24-man raid? I will LB as soon as its up (at 3) unless the above conditions apply.
Is it a dungeon? If I am a caster I will LB if tank is over his/her head with mass pulling and pray that it kills a few of the mobs. I will LB if I am a melee DPS as soon as it hits 3 unless conditions 1 and/or 2 apply. I will not LB as a healer, such a thing should not be needed even if paired with bads.
Is it PvP? Dude, go caster, bind multiple targets in place and let her rip. Have you ever had multiple caster LBs hit while enemies have been bound or heavy? Its glorious!
Usually in Dungeons, I go like this:
Use LB on first boss because it's usually still about 75% full by the time we get there and fills up while we're fighting it. Or if it's an earlier dungeon, it doesn't actually fill up at all during the first boss because our ilvls are too high.
1. Use on first boss.
2. Skip use on second boss in order to build up the second bar for use on the last boss at about 5-10%. At least that's how I do it.
because when tank do a large trash mob pull, as a caster I LB it, someone complain
because when tank do a large trash mob pull, as a range, I cast LB, and tank just dodge dance in a way most of the trash run out of my LB, someone complain
because as a melee, LB on boss, someone complain it is better to use on big pull
yeah, what ever i do, someone complain, i have enough of it
When not using it on big trash pulls, if I don't need to save it for the second/third bar, I may use it as soon as the fight starts. LB seems to build faster in boss fights anyway so you're gonna get a big chunk back by the end (not to mention some bosses specifically reward LB progress for properly doing mechanics). When I think we'll need to save it, I'll wait to use it at specific points: i.e., watching for mechanics. People can spam "LB!" at me all they want, I'm not using it when I know the boss is about to do something that'll either A) nullify/waste it or B) kill myself and/or others because I'm too busy shooting my lasers to move.
As Healer specifically, I am fully aware the party is nearly dead, but I'm also fully aware when to actually use it. No sense in me locking myself in a fancy dance for 10 seconds while the party gets up to die again, and then now so am I so I can't re raise. If the temporary invincibility applies to the healer LB3 then it's astounding how fast people still redie.
Take a walk on the wild side, and use it...use the tank LB3...use it! Either that or let the healers do it.
I mean, seriously, if we're in a full party content and the boss is under 25%, but we're taking a beating, why not use the tank LB3? It will give everyone a breather and we can finish instead of wiping. And if a huge mechanic just killed the majority of the party, the healer LB3 would seem to be a great solution to me, bring everyone back at full and let's do it to it.
Tanks and healers have some of the most powerful LBs and never use them, it's always left to the PS and even they seem afraid to use the LB sometimes. Perhaps it's time we all, tanks and healers, put the LB back on our bars and contemplate using it should the circumstances allow or demand.
Limit break is underpowered simple as that. In ARR it was really good but HW player power outshined it. SB there's no reason to use it now. The long cast time doesn't help with aoe mechanics flying all over the place and the flashy graphics don't line up witht he shit damage. In cases as say like a Dragoon using it, that kills my BotD meter and losing that is devastating to dps overall. So it's rare that it's safe to use LB for a very miminal gain.
Simple fix, increase it's power and while channeling/in animation it freezes all your buff timers. Put in something so you can't abuse it we're good. Otherwise unless it's scripted there's no point in LB use.
Trivia: Last I was aware, the power scaling of the LB is actually based on the average ilvl of your whole party's weapons. So if your LB damage isn't up to snuff, well.. someone's weapon is probably underleveled. Maybe. It still has its uses for the most part.
Can't stop, it'll hurt muh 1447 54^^UR41 DEE PEE ESS.
Main reason I don't always do it. LB1 is a DPS loss for all melee except maybe ninja, LB2 breaks even due to the six second lock, and LB3 is awesome but the 10 second lock is extra brutal and I'm almost guaranteed to have to scramble to get everything back on CD, assuming I don't get targeted mid lock and die to subpar healers.
Just finished a Deltascape 2.0 as the only ranged DPS, RDM. Had a MNK and 2 SAM. Guess who used the LB3? Yup, me.
Actually, I get more infuriated at cohealers refusing to kerp it on their hotbars, especially now that we aren't grossly overgearing the endgame.
But, most people I have asked are super gun-shy on the LB because of the shockingly long animation lock. It's totally possible for a player to die from otherwise avoidable damage because they were locked in the animation.
What's worse is if it get's interrupted after the cast starts, we lose any stacks of LB we had.
I don't feel like dying while having the animation go off, do 0 damage, and lose the LB. I'll use it when I can, but otherwise no. Muh deeps.
I always use it at least twice during dungeons. In fact, when a tank complained to my dps friend about using it on a trash pull I told him it was better than not using it at all.
Why do people wait until the last boss to use it when it can actually fill again if you use it early either on a boss or some trash mobs?
I played MCH for the vast majority of my time in HW, and it became ingrained in me that my LB is the lowest priority of all of them, and as a result I don't think to push it. Also the SAM LB3 is pretty underwhelming, so that doesn't exactly encourage me either.
I'll do it if I notice nobody has used it if there are no melee DPS who can make better use of it on bosses. Frankly, since it's tied to the party, I'd rather the healer use it in an emergency then use it on a mob randomly. You shouldn't be desperately trying to destroy random trash anyway when a few AoEs will get the job done.
I figure that DPS are so used to waiting for long queue times, that they accumulate a similar delay in activating the limitbreak. If the boss battle were to last 45 minutes to an hour, than I'm sure we'd see them hit the LB button eventually.
I've gotten used to slamming the LB at less than 1% as tank, just so a DPS can yell at me for wasting it as the boss death animation plays.
what i have learned from experience and common etiquette is this:
1. melee should always have first dibs because their LB is a single target attack that hits for high damage therefore most useful on a boss to cut their hp or finish them off. but in certain conditions it can also be used to help get through a special mechanic such as a meteor or enrage cast.
2. for range/caster dps you should only be using your LB if the tank pulls big and asks you to use it. or in some circumstances where the other dps happens to be dead an the boss has reached that 10% hp status or if the other dps is also a range/caster and doesn't execute it in that window. caster/range limit break is weaker than the melee LB because it is an AoE and that means its damage is spread out across Adds dealing considerably less damage if used on a boss or special mechanic.
3. Healer limit break is a last resort and essentially a mass res/raise that buffs the party when used, it should not be abused on trash pulls or dungeon bosses. it is hugely beneficial to have on standby in raids in case your party wipes and you as a healer are there alone and have LB3 prepped. as for LB1 and 2 its just a buff nothing so grand just like any other buff you can grant the party but with more kick to it.
4.tanks this may sound harsh but they really shouldn't be the 1 to use limit break at all their LB is just a massive defensive buff that lowers damage received, the only instance it could be used is if every party member is incapacitated and the boss is killable by the tanks dps for however long the buff lasts for. aside from that i've seen tanks LB3 used in special instances where a raid boss uses their ultimate attack for critical damage thus the buff gained from it sustains the party from facing a potential wipe.
i've seen some here reply about the gauges regeneration and have to say you are wrong, or haven't studied the changes they made to LB which states that gauge fills slower now than it previously had. so no you shouldn't be using it at your leisure but consider when it would be most beneficially used for your party and progression through a dungeon/raid/trail.
Oh, if you had any idea how much I want to, sometimes. But I've seen others do it, and on occation by mistake myself, and every time: "ooy! Why did you use LB?! >: ((("
One learns from experience. -_-
Because I'm a healer main and the times I've actually been on my DPS classes and been the one who needed to LB were so insignificantly small that it simply doesn't register in my mind as a possible action. I've been getting better at it recently but it's still a very hard habit to break when for months the LB button is usually reserved in my mind for saving the party.
I was person use LB for kill last boss
But, rare I see in duty roulette as low levels. BLM/BRD/MCH use LB as aoe for kill faster from huge pulls...
Before I asked "save for last boss?" They ignored it
1st boss? when i hear that DING and it's over 5 % it gets LB'd. 2nd boss? same deal. Last boss? I have one bar and it's going to be past 6% when the 2nd one fills.. LB. 'Goons have very simple LB rules. I get annoyed when casters LB bosses.. and every time i ask them why they didn't let me use my higher damage, single target LB on the BOSS... i get "lol there's no difference". I think we need an LB guildhest or something.
I've gotten scolded before for waiting to use it, so now it's automatic and I still get scolded: "should have saved for last boss" "there's an aoe pull we should use that on" ... didn't say anything I'm not going to save it.
..oh and a pox on people who LB's Nabriales before the vortex.
I use them fine on dungeons. Although I restrain sometimes on 1st boss in the faith the ranged dps will dunk it on the next masspull (9/10 they don't).
8/24 mans with DF'ers? I don't care to use it because the moment I do, everyone will make it their mission to fail every mechanic and aoe so they get to screech about no healer lb3.
Honestly, I've never had to use LB at all until SB content (Healer), and that is only after some utter group-derp.
IMO, if you can complete the fight without it, then don't use it. It's incredibly pointless to use on most fights except as a desperation move (which oddly enough I've seen in PotD more than I've seen in actual content.)
I used to use the limit break to finish off the first boss, or as an opener on the second boss. I stopped doing that because of frequent complaints from party members, saying that it should be saved for the last boss. But then there's others berating me for not using it until the last boss. You just can't win...
LB is bested used on caster LB in mass pull anyway.
Had this problem the other day in royal dragoon didn't use it when if had we wouldn't have wiped I would have but I was dead lol
I'm usually paired with a melee DPS when on my bard, so I try to let them use the LB on the boss. That said, for the love of Rhalgr, use the damn limit break! I've ended up using it when I've given up on them doing anything and it usually amounts to a smack on the butt. Maybe I'll make a macro on my healer...
A caster LB1 on just 2 targets does more damage than a melee LB1.
A caster LB1 on 4 targets does more damage than a melee LB2.
A caster LB1 on 7 targets does more damage than a melee LB3.
Caster should use it early on a trash pull, then again on a late trash pull. If the bar is full before the boss, it should only be saved if the boss has three or more simultaneous adds.
Melee DDs shouldn't LB except on primals and in non-alliance raids.
(For comparison, in a full party:
A caster LB2 on 4 targets does more damage than a melee LB3.
A caster LB3 on 2 targets does more damage than a melee LB3.)
