I am not bothered by the sound of the Shrill and Midare, but I too understand people having some ear sensitivity issues with it. Nothing much I can do.
Still, the only thing I can say is, probably... turn down the volume of Midare by 25% (And no, don't change the overall sound, it's just too good)
The shrill on both Higanbana and Tenko Goken's casting... as much as it fits the context of it, I think we don't need the shrill. It can stay silent, just with the sound effect of "gripping" the katana when casting with a quiet shrill of slightly unsheathing katana.
The sound as it is right now, there's no way a katana would ever shrill like that... I mean, I'm not grinding steel with steel!
Is something like this sound effect preferable... perhaps?
Games have a lot of graphics settings but not a lot of sound settings in comparison.
It would be nice to be able to put a lowpass filter on sound effects, and/or an EQ to tone down the >5000Hz noises.
The high-pitching ringing whine sound. It hurts my ears hearing the sound even from the room next to mine. Hearing it a lot gives me a headache, and we're talking like once every 3 seconds per SAM?
I've always thought this sound effect was a bit shrill, but today my housemate came to me from the other room, holding her head, and complained to me how nauseating the sound was. Yeah, this needs to be turned down.
I specifically don't like Hakaze especially in lower dungeons / palace of the dead floors with other samurai. Too much whiffing going on! :(
On one hand, I rather enjoy the sounds.
On the other hand, I know what it is like to be sensitive to certain frequencies of sounds, because I, too have that problem (just not THESE sounds, thankfully because I enjoy playing SAM).
I can understand where they are coming from, because I have above average hearing and some sounds that don't bother other people, bother me a lot (usually certain types of scraping noises).
I do love spamming noisy skills in town. Ring of thorns may be dead, but Unleashed isn't.

Yeah, kind of a problem when people need to mute sound effects when a SAM is in the vicinity, like I do. The keening sets my teeth on edge. I get that the sound is supposed to imply the "steeping in power" thing that the Iaijutsu abilities stand for but jesus, it's supposed to hurt the enemies, not the player.
The sound actually doesn't bother me in pvp because it helps me assist a target when I'm with them.
I love SAM but I have to admit that the sounds have a certain edge to them that I can see might irritate others.
I play samurai, and I 100% agree. The high pitched noise is painful on the ears. None of the rest of the sound effects are that bad (the Arcanist casting sound is the next closest annoying noise to me). It's especially bad when you have to consider turning off noises because your own sound effects are too much.
Normally I find that the sound design in this game is much too high pitched for my liking but I actually really like iaijutsu sounds. I wouldn't mind if they added a bit mote bass to the actual attacks but the charging is perfect for me.
What I really don't like is the high pitched zing sound that plays whenever you do a combo.
Shame on me, I actually like those sounds...
I mean, you can always turn down the volume! or just play with no sound at all.
I made a recording of those high pitched sounds:

I don't have trouble with Iaijutsu's 3 combo move, it's the 1 and 2 combo that are most annoying; Higanbana and Tenka Goken.
Lets hope someone finally fixes this so we can actually play Samurai. Long exposure to these is sure to cause ear damage, and especially in instances aoe rotation you almost literally spam that screeching sound.
Turn sounds off you say? Well that's a fun way to play a game! ... not. I prefer with sounds.
I like them.
I also mourn the original GNB sounds, that got turned into muffled, dull wet noises after similar complaints...
