PSN and FFXIV: why pay twice?

They said this right as the ps4 was coming out if the game is free to play or has a sub to be paid you do not need ps plus.

This silly topic again...

In fact, since you get 30 days to your account you are only paying 5 usd to get the "other" version I don't think it is too much

Except, that was back when ESO ran on a subscription-only system (in regards to the Xbox situation). Now it is B2P with a premium option, so naturally it would require PS Plus.

I am relieved that I don't have to pay extra and happy I can stay in this beautiful game ;)

It's Sony (and Microsoft) who's robbing you guys. Why should anybody pay them just so you can play online? Sony (and MS) doesn't host data centers for games (beside 1st party games). They're just a portal forcing people to go through and taking their money.

They supposed to beg the players to play online so their communities can be more lively.

They need to make money somehow to keep their servers up so people can get updates and actually play online. There would be no PSN if there is no server with the infrastructure to connect you to the actual game's servers.

Both Sony and Microsoft get a cut out of every transaction you make related to their platform, their services can operate just fine and remain profitable on that alone as Valve does with running Steam. It's easy profit and customers have learnt to accept it, so why not make it mandatory and then increase prices while you're the "top dog"? I don't understand why Sony gets away with it though, frequent downtime and piss poor download speeds while charging the same prices as XBL.

Great that it's not required for FFXIV, but it definitely sucks when you want to play Bloodborne/Destiny once or twice a month and you have to maintain a subscription just to play with others.

Can confirm along with the others here that you do not need a PS+ membership to play FFXIV. I would also like to add, however, that you do not need a membership to use party chat, some apps, and some games. I listen to Spotify, watch Netflix, and talk to people on PSN all without a PS+ membership.
