On this i do like the FFXIV system a lot. FFXI had a truly fantastic story line, but it was extremely difficult to make the opportunity to see it. Not so hard to accomplish that here. Regarding the Casual/Mid/Hard Core definition. I don't know what i qualify as. I spent many nights grinding out 10 hour battles vs Kirin back in the day. Yes, this is going to be a continuous problem with the way Yoshida set the game up now.... Every 4 months there will be a patch or an expansion that will take 1-2 days to clear a patch or 1-2 weeks to clear an expansion... And there won't be much of a reason to continue playing because you have already seen everything... But you are correct, there is almost no reason to dump 100+ hours into Creator savage. We already know in 6 months, you will be able to go in at lvl 70 and scoop up all the rewards in a fraction of the time it takes everyone that is doing it now. The same applies to Anima weapon, and every other piece of content in this game. I really don't understand how this system was greenlit into production.
The easiest way to get anything you want...... is to stop playing for 2 patches. -

for clarification, Alexander Normal is easier than EXs, and EXs are usually almost the same in difficulty as the 1st floor of each savage set. (though the prior 2 might have been a tad bit harder, but no where near as hard as the following 3 floors on that set)
So with Coils, do T5 unsynced, and then go and do T6 synced, as it will be far easier. -

First, you are not a midcore player, you are a casual borderline unstable player.
Second, even if, unbeliable, the lead director of the game thinks you are a totally ok player since you go and come back just as he intends his player base to do, it is suprising to me that you say there is no motivation when the whole game is made arround players like you from a design perspective, even number patches push the content, odd number patches fill up any gaps, you can then, play just fine by playing 1 month each patch, so, in a 6 month cycle, you are required to play only 2 months to "stay up to date".
Motivation is a personal thing, there is nothing the developer team can make to make you feel motivated to play this when you already go away for months and you have been playing since 1.0, and even if it was, it would only make the big design issue going with game even deeper, the cattering to returning/unactive players and its ridiculous "no one left behind" policy that only wastes resources and development time. If you have been here since 1.0, that is 2010, and you still haven't found a motivation, tbh, you are better off for your own good, and ours, the last thing we need is the dev team wasting more time and resources into players like yourself. -

OP is a bad example and not representative of any community, need to focus on the big picture: SE tried appealing to hardcores (gordias, midas), which failed miserably and caused severe damage to the game pop. Now that SE has instituted a correction, that correction needs to maintained notwithstanding the sudden complaints from that 1 percent of hardcores lest disaster repeat itself again.

If i end up liking deep dungeon i could disappear into that for weeks and not get a single level up from regular battle content. -

I play challenging fights because they're the most fun content in the game. Fights that are easy are pretty boring. If the challenge isn't fun to you, no amount of carrot is going to make you do it.

The OP makes some very great points. I agree with most of them. I'm already bored with the new patch. I think I just keep resubbing for the story each patch. Why keep capping the highest rate tomes when the gear will just be obsolete in a few weeks?

Flatly, the OP seems like a player who enjoys the game, yes, but will only make the effort for gear incentives once they are at their easiest to get, using that as justification to not task themselves with content when it's both relevant and challenging. Knowing that all things become easier over time due to nerfs, Echo buffs and overleveling/outgearing, it's effectively gaming the system. And that's fine, but I would say it's hardly something to boast about.
I fancy myself quite the opposite. I love the challenge. I'm far from the best, but I give my all as if I were. I push myself to learn battle content on my own and enjoy figuring it out well before I seek out guides. I love PvP and the dynamic aspect of it. I love raiding, and how it's less a test of my ability alone, but how well my friends and I can work together, push our limits and win. I love glamour; it's not enough for me to do well, I gotta look good doing it. Best of all, I love helping others learn to do what I do. Not just because helping them only creates more dependable allies for future endeavors, but even now, I can look across Idyllshire and say "I taught that guy T5, she and I cleared Weeping City together the first time, I taught him how to MCH in PvP. . .", and it's a great feeling, one that can't be experienced simply waiting it all out.
Simply put, some are fine walking the trail up the mountain. I like to climb it, or blaze the trail with others. If anyone's "mid core", it'd be me. -

This game doesn't have that. But i love other things about it, and i play those things.
FFXIV will never be hard core enough for me to take that part of the game seriously, but it wasn't ever built with that in mind. I'm always a bit disappointed by that on some level, but at the same time, if a modern hard core MMO were my make or breaking factor in what game to play, i'd go play EVE. ... or SOMETHING... but if this game had that kind of end game, i would play it. I don't because it's not here to play. It never will be. -

As opposed to the "I'm mid-core, I choose not to play end game, lol to those of you who do, what's even the point of it?" feel of your original post, what you're really saying is you play the game to only a certain extent as it doesn't have certain features or systems you would prefer more than what's currently in place. However you do still love the game. That's entirely different from your original statement and far more valid. Pseudo-pride in effectively doing less or spending less time to accomplish what others have, again, is hardly a boasting point. Maybe you didn't mean it as such, but that's quite how it came across.
This is technically my first MMO and I'm quite satisfied with it. Prior to this, I came from an old console RPG I played online with friends that had MMO elements to it, and was quite grindy. Despite that, it was a lot of fun (White Knight Chronicles for anyone curious). Some of those friends really grew to enjoy this game, and others were almost immediately disillusioned. What I told them was that this game is NOT WKC and never will be. So long as they play this looking for that experience, they will continue to be disappointed. I've since branched into other MMOs and I enjoy those too, as they are, and not based on what I like from XIV. I'm not saying people aren't entitled to preference, but fact is playing Game A expecting what Game B offers will generally never be satisfying, even if you enjoy both games. -

And it bears repeating that the hardcore demographic has not, and is not, SE's target audience. The main reason is economics: F2P cash shops are much more effective at monetizing hardcore players, which are as a whole a very small percentage, than subscriptions. Subs cap the revenue from a single player while F2P cash shops can truly milk hardcore players for staggering five to even six figure sums of money per person.
Hence SE, running a sub based MMO, rightly must appeal to the widest audience possible rather than a select minority. Simply put, this game is not meant for people like you OP and you should instead look at F2P mmos, if you can bear dealing with their cash shops. -

I consider myself a casual player (not even midcore) but I have
Beaten T1-13 when relevant.
Beaten A1s and A2s when relevant.
Killed every primal ex when relevant (including Sophia ex)
Every battle job to 50, with 4 capped at 60.
Every crafter to 60 with max stats for the new 4 stars
Every gatherer to 60 with max stats for the new 3 stars
Check out my lodestone for all my minions and mounts (including fenrir)
I hate grinding and I feel like I'm the slow one leveling up or doing special events, for example, I just got the yokai minion mounts and didn't even bother with the weapons.
I still have not got my POTD +30/+30 once yet, with only 3 potsherds.
I just finished my 240 relic only a month ago.
All I have achieved is from simply going at a slow, non-grindy, pace and I usually put in about 4-12 hours of playtime per week.
I choose to to end game because it is fun. Challenging content is fun. Coordinating with other people for a common goal is fun. And I hate grinding.
I think the game is literally designed around a player just like me.
So, not sure about your definition of midcore, or my definition of casual.
I'm not sure what the appeal of grinding a ton to make certain fight easier. And you bring up eve as a challenging grind, I guess paying for a sub over a time period is fun for grinders? For me, nope.
I have known RL people just like the OP, but they don't ever play these types of MMOs. They usually stick to lineage or eve. -

Personally, I do not define casual, midcore or hardcore on skill level, content played or hours played.
I use them to define HOW you enjoy content. That is, all three groups can enter Alex Savage.
A casual player will do it casually, they won't set a schedule, but they'll just play it when they feel like it. They'll set up a PF or queue in to Raid Finder and go nuts whenever they want, with out that much concern for progression.
A midcore player will set up a schedule, but only raid a couple nights a week max. They have a lot of other obligations, or just don't have the interest in making end-game raiding their priority. They won't care if they don't clear for weeks or months. These players take things seriously and ensure everyone has watched a guide and knows their role.
A hardcore player will raid multiple times per week, aims for things like world/server firsts. They have a full set of crafting gear day 1, so they can immediately enter the content. They don't watch the video guides, they make the video guides. These players spend a lot of their time practicing the fights, and spend a lot of time outside of fights planning how to progress further.
Ultimately, I used an example, because making a blanket definition is more difficult. The essence is in how one enjoys content, not how many hours they play, what content they beat, or which content they choose to take part in.
Using this definition, I would say the OP is strictly casual. My raid team is very much midcore.
