For me, I push down on the left analog stick and press X,Y,A or B. I use a Logitech controller. I don't remember setting this up, but I just discovered it by accident.

I play with target style A with enemy only filter (left/right targets mobs up down targets PT members)
This is how it currently works :
---|-O1--------------O5|---
----|----------O2------|----
-----|----O3----------|-----
------|---------------|------
--------|----O4----|--------
---------------X------------
You are X and the camera is perfectly center behind you. Under our current targeting priorities if you cycle through the mobs left to right the fist mob to be selected will be mob: O1 followed by O3 > O4 > O2 > O5.
if you cycle right to left it goes O5 > O2 > O4 > O3 > O1
If you want to target the closest mob ( O4 ) you have to at least target two other mobs to get to it UNLESS you swing your camera so mob O4 is the left most or right most mob in your field of vision.
THIS IS WHAT I PROPOSE:
I would like an OPTION to have targeting to be Radial (closest to furthest ) from your field of view. if this were the case
then mob O4 would be the first to be targeted.
If you go from left to right it would go O4 > O3 > O2 > O1 > O5
from right to left O4 > O3 > O2 > O5 > O4
How often in game are you trying to target something further away then something close to you? Not often enough to have this current targeting system as the standard or at the very least the only option.
The action is always in front of you 99.9% of the time the action is closer to your character than further away. Having a targeting system that reflects that only makes sense.
maybe is should draw a picture.
this is the best thread i have ever seen, please devs comment about this! >.<
For the sake of Stronghold-style NMs with several henchmen mobs, it's be nice to be able to just click F12 or something have have the nearest NM targeted automatically.
Can we get a rep response to this? Any insight if this request will be passed along to the devs, if plans are in the works for the near future, for ver 2.0 or does a targeting system like this have a snow balls chance in hell of ever seeing daylight?
Or do I have to photoshop a picture of an Opo-opo and a malboro, cause those posts seem to get a fast reply. This thread was created a month ago.

there made a photo.
I worked hard on that picture!
Wow, seeing as many people complain about the targeting systems in this game, I'm surprised people don't use WASD and their mouse more often, it's a Godsend for me. I never use Tab or the arrow keys unless I absolutely have to.
Need to target myself? Click me or my name.
Need to repair someone's gear? Click on em.
Need to adjust the camera angle? Hold down right-click and drag, or use the mouse wheel for zoom.
Need to Cure a party member? Click on Cure in my Action Pallete, then click on their name in the party list.
Need to engage multiple enemies? Double-click on the first one, then click on the other ones to switch targets and start auto-attacking. If I need to stop attacking for some reason, just click the background.
The only problems I have is in areas like the beastmen strongholds where there are tons of enemies and people bunched up together to accurately click on a single target, in which case I'll usually just hit F8 and Enter to target the closest mob and hope for the best (lol Storm's Path). Even then, I can still hit F1 to target myself, or click on someone's name in the party list to target them.
And as far as I know, I'm using Target Mode A, I think. It says "All" on my HUD, anyway. I haven't really messed with it much, other than to turn off that annoying camera-centering on whatever you're fighting.
Yes, please change it D;
maybe today will be the day this gets a rep response?

Pancakes approves the thread.
Targetting needs to be fixed gentlemen~
How about why does the party menu not show You the Player on the top of the party menu on the UI? I guess I'll have to wait for 2.0 for that.
Wait you can change your active hotbar without clicking with the mouse? (Keyboard only)
BUMP!
lol I know to early he was goign to do it everyday, but i feel this is a major issue that should be worked on after jobs comes out. sick of targeting mobs 1/2 way across the map when 5 mobs infront of me attackign pt memebers and i have to cycle though ones not even close to me.
/assist won't help when you are trying to target a mob close by behind others. Like trying to line up a AOE WS on lancer. You still hav eto cycle through multiple targets not even close to you.
p.s.
Bump
just finished up another SH party....
MAN! I wish we had better targeting ......
We're getting /assist and <bt>. :D
Also: Use your mouse. Targets exactly what you want it to target.
There is no substitute for accurate tab-targeting, which can be complemented by accurate mouse-targeting, but not wholly replaced.
Make sure you're not clicking on your own character's name when you're doing it, because it'll often select whatever's "on top" or "in front" in relation to your camera view. I play a fat Roegadyn, so it happens to me a lot too. ^^; I just rotate the camera around a bit to get a clear view of the target.
Or, I guess you could use F8, if the monster's right in front of you. If there's a lot of things bunched up together for me to accurately click them, then I usually do that.
Honestly, I really don't see how people use Tab for targeting. I find it highly time-consuming and unpredictable, which is bad for areas like the beastmen camps.
Click targeting isn't accruate during battle when you have 8+ mobs clumped together. Like during stronghold battles trying to line up "Doom Spike" to hit as many mobs as possible is a hassle

----|--------------------------o---|
------|-o----------o-o-----------|
---------|-------o--Y-o-------|
------------|-----o--o-----|
---------------|---o----|
------------------|X|
try to target "Y" under current targeting priorities or with click targeting.

it would take either 8 or 6 cycle targeting under current priorities system.
Figure B1) <proposed "Radial Targeting System">

or 5 cycle targets under what I'm proposing.
In figure B1 and B2 every target from first to desired target is a valid battle target. Unlike in figure A1 and A2 where you have to cycle through non battle targets to get to your desired target.
I'm asking for an option to be put in, not for this to be the standard targeting system. If you like the way it currently is stick with it. However if you don't like our current targeting solutions and woudl like to try something else why not this?
Maybe after another six or seven pages of ASCII diagrams, people will understand!
WAR had similarly terrible tab-targeting logic and it was infuriating in that game and it's infuriating in this game.
ChiefCurrahee, in that kind of scenario, personally I'd be using some sort of AoE move that hit everything instead of worrying about some sort of move that uses awkward targeting, but that's just me.
May I suggest an alternative targeting system, though? Although it would still involve using the mouse, but it'd be a start...
Allow players to hold down left-click and drag a marquee around multiple monsters. A list similar to the party member list would show up, and players could use their mouse, function keys, etc. to select individual targets from only that marquee selection. I see it being just like dragging to select multiple icons on your computer's desktop, and then using Shift+Click or Ctrl+Click to make your selection more specific. Players could then use AoE moves on specific enemies more easily.
Just a random thought. I'm not really sure how you could make it easier for keyboard-only or controller setups... maybe have some sort of numeric interface that pops up next to each monster on-screen (next to their levels or something) and players could press a button combination (say, Shift+3, or L2+Triangle, etc.) to target the monster that has #3 next to it.
Targeting is fine.
I don't get it but then again I don't get the existing ones either. Isn't it weird that one mode was enough for all of XI but now they've added a group of modes none of which work by themselves? I hate it when I accidentally switch these modes all the time.
I suggest to use the target option "/btmode" post 1.20. SE change /btmode from "Target Engaged Enemies Only" (also enemies attacking only you) to "Target fighting Enemies Only" with 1.20 until they have a "Target enemies fighting your party" ready.
But I hope they improve the normal tab, too.
I think it use currently only the X coordinate to select the next target. If SE use the Y coordinate too, they could calculate the distance between the enemies and the player and could make it that Tab select the true nearest enemy.
I am shocked this thread has yet to see an official response.
Excuse me "Community Rep", what is the call on the lame targeting system?
It was alright until someone(SE) screwed with it. I was able to toggle it with my keyboard: From "All, Friendly to Enemy" with a single button. That's all I need, not some stink-en targeting priority system... (it's a small issue which needs a simple fix, which gets my goat).
