Tank Design Contest Semi-Finalists

I'm not a fan at all of cloth sets for tanks, but I wouldn't mind a lot of these being all-jobs glamour items.

Maybe not as tank exclusive gear, but I'd LOVE to see this in a Valentines Day Event. It would fit soooo well!

Yeah I feel similarly about a few of them. Maybe they will do a general Gear Design contest and some of these designs will make another appearance there. I can see quite a few of the designs being useable with all the classes.

OMG the goobbue is adorable. I also love that royal style one you posted above ^ it looks lovely.

The Goobbue is the one outfit I would be most disappointed if won.

That's a glamour that should be considered as a cosmetic joke like the Swine attire and be a reward from the GS, not some tank exclusive gear.
I'd be happy for just about anything else.

Can we just fire the design team and outsource all the armor to the fans? I don't wanna hate but wow.... there is so much imagination and variety with this amazingly drawn out sets.. Seriously though some of these people that designed these sets should be in charge of something.

Yes we really really do need more gear designed like this across the board. The current fashion trends in the game are so painfully dull and drab. Why can't we have bright, frilly, and beautiful gear? Make it look more fantasy and less military.

I don't know why, but it just gives me the impression that the Heavy Allagan set joined a garlean motorbike enforcer gang.

I prefer 'funny' to 'fancy' so you can probably guess which ones in the link on the first page I prefer.

I love all the designs... but it feels like some designed whatever they wanted, and some didn't even know it was a "tank" theme.

The funny one's are cute and great opportunities for an event (the goobbue and adamantoise), but I hope some of these nice designs aren't wasted.

I definitely like this since there's very few actual tank coat armor that looks feasible and quite nice. Overall the majority of these designs are top notch (possible better than tank gear ingame)

I can see the allure in having something different. But some of the entries don't exactly look like tank gear, or rather, semi-conventional or even conventional tank gear. (Gobbue and frilly dress to be specific) So while I can appreciate the idea and want for something different, I do think some of these ideas are far-fetched even though there were no exact guidelines as to how the gear should have looked.

That Allagan one is really beautiful. :D But some of those sets dont even look like something a tank should wear in battle. Like the one with all the stars on it look more like a caster set. Lots of them also would be better to have as class free glamour set like the Gobbue one or the king one. Maybe one can hope and these will be put in the gold saucer as price since they look really well (just not as tank armor imo)

Design is not about drawing quality. Also, with JP, NA and EU having contests at the same time it made more sense to have one grand prize winner from each region. How do you know what the other entries look like? You can't say the JP players had better quality entries without seeing them all!

I have a need.

There's a lot of good looking gears there but honestly 80% are caster with plate boots or something that we would see being unlocked for all the jobs, instead of PLD/DRK/WAR exclusive. I can see a lot of those gears working for, let's say, Red Mage. But just a few of em give me a "tank" feeling.

There's far too much cloth in this to be considered Tank "armor". Way too many skirts and junk that won't properly be animated either. I'd rather not see any more stretched metal plates when I run. We have too many as it is.

My tastes lean toward armor that looks at least semi-believable as something that a tank would actually wear into battle without instantly sustaining a fatal wound to an exposed vital area. I want to see one of the armor armors win.

This one is in line with my ideal of what beautiful tank armor would look like. It's intricate and elegant, but covering without making the wearer look like they're trapped in a tin can. If SE continued the stained glass motif, this gear would look stunning in person. I only wish the artist would have included a concept of somebody wearing the armor because I'm not sure I understand what's going on with the feet.

I'll be sorely disappointed if the winner is one of the 'silly' designs or 'cloth' designs. It makes much more sense for the winning entry to be one of the designs that actually looks like it would protect its wearer rather well. As much as I hate to bring up the 'realism' argument in a fantasy game...I feel like it's fair to suggest that the most important target audience should be those who actually appreciate the whole classic approach to heavy armour. It's not as if it can't be both fairly bulky and reasonably elaborate at the same time.

Too many "somewhat-tank, but could work for anyone" entries. Also a ton of PLD-type armors...

Wow! How are the judges going to decide? All of them are great ideas and the sheer talent... just amazing.

I feel a lot of the entries should be used for other roles. Mainly because they don't fit the guidelines of the contest. The armor was supposed to be designed with no difference between male and female characters! I see a bunch of artists seem to have overlooked that little stipulation. :( Still, I hope the designs are considered for implementation into the game even if they don't win the contest.

BUT

Now we both have a fair idea of the style S.E. would like to see in the game. I'm already thinking of designs for other roles for the next contest. :D

As far as the entries go...

This is my favorite tank. It has a classy feel to it. I really like the practicality of the armor as well as the overcoat. (Plus the fact that my entree looked somewhat like it. hee hee.)

This Allagan Luminous Surcoat just HAS to win. It's fitting in the game's universe, very beautiful, badass and all that stuff while looking like actual tank gear. It's the best entry without a doubt. Some others are very very good too but man this Allagan Luminous one is absolutely awesome. I NEED IT.

I'm personally not a fan of "bulk", so I don't really hope anything bulky wins and instead one of the more sleek designs - Armored or not, I'd like to keep my feminine figure. I also don't mind the tribal looking ones - it fits the berserker theme of WAR. I just don't like the dresses and joke-ish entries. Then again, I don't like playing tank precisely because I have to glamour something generic over like 90% of the stuff we already have for tanks (Excluding High Mythrite/Midan Coat), so perhaps I'm simply not the audience for them. /huh

But honestly, I'd rather have Red Mage have a simple and cleaner-looking AF if it ever gets to XIV. The contest one has a lot of things going on with it but it's not bad though.
