I'd probably be a roe if their skin tones were better. The Hellsguard have good tones but the black dog noses really wreck it for me.

<<Lalafell>> <<Master>> <<Race>>
Female Miqo'te Seeker of the sun.
Female because I am female.
Miqo'te because in MMOs I prefer to go for the less human like races. I'd have been Roe if they had tails. Needed a tail! Tried Au Ra but prefer the fluffiness.
Sun seeker pretty much just because I prefer the warmer colours. Though I also quite like the eyes.
I'm a male midlander hyur. I play a guy because I played a male Tarutaru back in ff11. It worked out though because most of my guy friends who play have female characters! I started out in beta as a male lalafell, when I moved servers (ie made a new character on Balmung), I became a male sun seeker. Then my friends started playing on Gilgamesh so I made this guy over there and he turned into my main.
Currently; Female Keeper
In the past: Uh, pretty dang near everything (Except lala. I have an alt for that). I actually got a name change to a unisex name to help with my fantasia addition.
I'm with you on that. I like that they have distinct facial features rather than just "tall human". What gets me about them is how stiffly they and the elezen move.
Female Xaela Au Ra, though pre-3.0 I was a Female Miqo'te Keeper for both lore and aesthetic reasons. Amusingly enough, the first look I went with as an Au Ra used almost the same color palette and started off looking somewhat similar to my Miqo'te.
Decided later on to fantasia again with the desire to achieve a more fierce look and now they couldn't look any more different.
What do you mean by "black dog noses"? Here's my femroe and I don't see anything wrong with her nose. Hellsguard. Is it exclusive to males?

1. I usually Fantasia every one-to-two weeks.
2. I generally play as a female.
3. Female Lala Dunesfolk is my usually go-back-to race, so I picked that one.
Main and only character:
Female Miqo'te - Seeker of the Sun.
I've always wanted to be a cat lady (no pun intended) and the FFXI Mithra race just wasn't doing it for me. Spent my 9 years on that game as a Hume; needed a change :)
FemRoe is love. FemRoe is life.
In all seriousness I picked a Roe Sea Wolf woman primarily because I like Lominsian lore and I knew I wanted to main a Warrior so it felt like a good fit.
The lack of male Raen is pretty weird to me.
But I'm not sure I want to change from Xaelady because that would simultaneously make me less sassy and less Mongolian.
Speaking of, reasons I'm on this character now:
- I like playing female characters because.
- The Xaela lore is super cool to me. The medieval Mongols are just a truly fascinating story, and I like seeing something inspired by that, especially since the few Xaela we meet in-universe are anything but mindlessly violent brutes.

I just always play a "human" character
Only character, my miqo'te lady <3
My main is Kacho here. He's a Plainsfolk lalafell. Me? I'm a long time player of WoW gnomes. Got burned out on that MMO and decided to give FFXIV a try.
After seeing the "Answers" video, I absolutely had to have a lalafell healer. The combination of cuteness, empathy, and bravery stole my heart.
In real life, I've always been physically weak so a big, strong hero type doesn't appeal to me. I rather play the loyal sidekick who supports the hero and it seemed to me that in FFXIV, the best friend can you have is a Plainsfolk Lalafell. So, I created Kacho and have been having fun ever since. #cuteguy4life
Female Midlander Hyur. In a game full of non humans, I like being the normal one. It, oddly enough, makes me an outlier than non-human races. Female cause I'm female. I haven't seen a good enough trap for me to make one yet =3
Although I am currently a male Plainsfolk Lala who is pretty cute, but I am usually male Seeker of the Sun Miqo.
I chose that because you know, cat person, and most games don't have the option to be a catboy, so yeah. :P
I started off as a Dunesfolk Lalafell and have remained the same on my main since. That said I did use one fantasia to make some appearance changes beyond what the aesthetician can do, but I still have a second free one sitting around from my HW pre-order... or veteran rewards or whatever.
Main reason was appearances, though I must admit that the miniscule racial bonus to piety over all else did tip me towards envisioning this character as a magic user first and fore-most, so it has kind of developed into a personal lore matter.
Male Miqo'te, Sunseeker.
I only tried this game because I heard that there were catboys in it, which I like due to the fact usually games only have catgirls when there is a animal like race. I picked Sunseeker for two reasons: One, it fit the theme I was going for with my character at the time (based off an OC ), and two, I loved the slit eyes and tanner skin tones that the Seekers had.
Bald Highlander for life.
Roegadyn Sea Wolf female here! I made Bunny the way I did for a few reasons.
1) I (and my boyfriend) come from FFXI where I played a red haired Hume F and he played a Galka. I fell in love with the Galkan aesthetic for ten years before we moved to XIV. I always hated how there were no female Galka in XI, as I wanted to play a physically strong female race and imo, none existed in Vana'diel.

2) Naturally, when I started XIV, I made a Femroe and never changed once, never will! She has the red hair I love and the Galka skintone I remember from XI. :)

I'm a woman and I play my character hours on end at a time.
So i made my character a Moon Miqo'te male.
They are quite easy on the eyes.
Character - Warrior
Gender - Female
Race - Superior
When I started, I wanted a tough looking character so it was between Hyur Highlander & Roegadyn Sea Wolf. In the end I chose Highlander and stuck with it for 2 years and mained Warrior. I would've picked Hellsguard easily, but the dog nose was not appealing at all. Reminds me of the Dog Guy from The Shining. *Shudders!*
Then my wife decided to play and she made an Elezen Duskwight. From that point on, I wanted to be one, so we could be the same and, so after 2 years of Highlander awesomeness, I changed to a Duskwight as well and took the role as a lover over a fighter. I like tough guy characters, but I love my wife more! I also changed my main to Dragoon as I think it suits Elezen more than Warrior.
Male Lalafell! The most unique race in the game, compared to the "human" race, the "human wearing cat ears and a tail" race, the "slightly tall human" race, and the "human wearing horns next to their face" race. Lalafells have a completely different perspective on the world, and they live on a different scale from the rest of the races. Roes also have differences from the "humans wearing cosplay" races, so they're my second favorite. They just don't have quite as many.
I main a female Xaela and I'll most likely stay that way unless SE release a new race that I would find better looking that my current character.
That just looks like a shadow to me. I just logged in, zoomed into my character's face and panned the camera to straight up her nose and I still don't see anything that distracts or detracts from her appearance. I'm standing right next to the lift attendant in Limsa who is also a roe and he doesn't have the shadow at all so I see what folks are saying, but it doesn't really stand out to me as that big a deal. I might try to adjust it and see if it's something with certain faces\character models because there's definitely roes out there without any shadow at all.

If you look at the Hellsguards on the right, you'll see the black mark on the bottom of the nose. It's more prominent in the males.
The dark nose is only on Hellsguard Roes, both genders. I think it shows the least on the face option you chose. Here's the same face as a Sea Wolf:

My main is Sea Wolf Femroe because I wanted to make a character that was similar to my previous main character; tall, strong and beautiful. The elves seemed too skinny to be strong, Highlanders felt a bit too girly but Roes seemed nice. I looked them up and liked Sea Wolf lore and player characters. I chose Halone as my deity and started as a lancer so it was also fitting to be a strong pale chick. If they ever bring mixed races I would probably try what Elf-Roe is like. Blue skin ftw :D

This is kinda neat. Hope more ppl respond.
One thing that always bothers me in the Official Census is that it doesn't divide the races into subcategories.
I play as a female Raen at the moment. Usually I like to play human females, making them resemble myself, but the Midlander animations (specifically their running animation) were pretty off-putting. I played a Seeker Miqo'te instead, but once Heavensward dropped I switch to Raen and never looked back.
I play female Au Ra Raen. Mainly because I think they look really pretty. I like their white scale color. Why wouldn't you want to have horns and a tail. Dragon girl for life.

Didn't really click with the races in FFXI but I love Black Mages so I picked Tarutaru for the INT and MP boost. After years of being a Taru I can't imagine playing anything else.
Started as a male Keeper, made an alt and that was also a Keeper (male) and changed him to a Lala for the lulz (and because I had other Lala alts and I really like them) have remained as a Lala since on the alt and also changed my original main (Ren) to a Lala and though I kinda miss him as a kitty, I'm pretty happy with how cute he looks like this.
Wow, I'm surprised how many people have responded, and even more surprised about the number of poll votes. Thanks everyone!
I suppose I didn't answer my own question in the OP. I play as a male Keeper Miqo'te because I picked this game up with two friends. I liked the look of the Au Ra and the Miqo'te the most, and both of my buddies chose Au Ra so I thought I'd be the odd duck of the group and be a cat. The Miqo'te could also be made closer to my IRL height too, which was a plus. Max Miqo'te is like an inch or two shorter than I am. Minimum height Au Ra is almost like, a foot taller than me if I remember correctly o_o
I'm probably going to switch at some point in time though. Reading about the tribal names of the Xaela Au Ra in the name lore thread really makes me want to play as a Xaela. Though, there is a distinct lack of Elezen running around and they've grown on me since I got to Coerthas and started Heavensward... So I might go Duskwight. I am terribly indecisive.
I actually enjoy the "rarity" of the Elezens. It just makes me feel a little different from most, although the "rarest" are the Roegadyn, in particular the Hellsguard. I was surprised to find so few Roes in the world as I thought they would be popular just on size alone. Who doesn't want to be a big bad brute? Apparently not many. Cats & midgets are the norm here.
