You don't play many then? Eve Online, WoW allows it, Rift, SW:TOR ... most even allow mailing cross faction.

You just said the same thing I said...it is based on the amount of currently online players.
I really doubt SE would be so oblivious that they would take into account all my 8 characters on Excalibur as 8 more characters to add to the lock number. I could also create 8 characters on a whole other server (for no reason at all) and create even more towards the lock even though my account is essentially one entity since you can only login to one character at a time. Why on earth would they count me as 16 people? It makes zero sense.
Unless you make more than one FFXIV account and pay more than one sub you only exist as one player no matter how many alts you make because in the World you are on they only exist one at a time. When you have Character A and Character B and you are online on Character A, Character B doesn't actually exist on your server at that time until you switch off Character A and go online on Character B. You can only increase or decrease your World's online population by a factor of 1 at all times (unless you make another FFXIV account and sub).
Balmung is seldom open because there are too many people online on the server at all hours. Also it is locked for a reason...I know it sucks when you can't get on a server you want but it would do no good if SE just let us overpop a server till it breaks. Blaming people with multiple alts for you not being able to make your own alt on that server is a bit silly imo.
Well, opting out of the MSQ isn't something I'd choose to do because I enjoy the story. So, I'm not keen on that idea, personally.
Having played WoW where the need to level characters traditionally has largely been ditched in the interests of convenience, I'd worry that introducing something like this would damage the game.
Two things would make this game more alt friendly are being able to send mail between characters on the same server and allowing alts to share a private house. Those two changes alone would make them much easier to play.
I've always had alts in other games and I've made them here too, but they don't get played very often largely because of the mailing restriction. That's the one thing I'd like to see changed.
Its a bit back and forth. Yes, your account can only exist in-game as one character at a time, so it ultimately doesn't matter if you have one or multiple characters on a server if you were to spend the same amount of time on that server. That is true. But if you are going to have multiple characters, having them on different servers (or, at the very least, not all on the highest-population servers) is "better".You'll be on the higher-pop server less often, which frees up space for other people (hopefully their mains), and you'll be on lower-pop servers more often, which can help with their population issues too.
As an aside, I have several characters; most of which I made and never used (including one on Greg). I do have my main and my alt both on the same server; main's cleared A4S, alt is geared enough to do so, but I'm too lazy to run in two statics at once (so just pug A1S and A2S when I feel like it with him). Alt isn't for RP, he's for playing and gearing a different job (healer) than my main (tank)
please Q.Q all the emotes and glamour i have unlocked either from seasonal or bc i bought or was gifted...also pets and mounts as well...sometimes want to escape to an alt or play a different race...even now with server visit i still want alts to play but so many things lost...
It a wonderful dream but sadly not going to happen. I collect alts personally and the idea of collecting and not being able to use what I collect on all of my characters just demotivates me to do any serious collecting at all.
It's probably way too late in the game for them to change it assuming they'd even want to.
nah i just decided to post in an old thread to say "hi i still want this" instead of making a new one bc im lazy
7yrs later the game being severely unfriendly to alts is still a huge problem
Jumped to the last post. First thing I see is firemage claiming his opinion is fact.
Why did I expect anything less?
Redoing MSQ is fine with me and there is the possibility to buy a story skip anyway. I am currently redoing MSQ and all side content in order slowly on an alt just for the fun of it. The unending journey would not be compatible with that.
For the story skip which I bought on an alt, I would nevertheless prefer if it came with completed basic utility quests such as chocobo inventory and battle, retainers, aesthetician and glamours. It would also be nice to have the possibility of unlocking raids and extremes by just talking to an npc after buying the skip. Unlocking all that group side content takes a lot of time. It’s kind of annoying to have only CT unlocked when you buy a story skip that puts you at the beginning of EW. Some achievements could also be shared (like mine/harvest x zillion times).
Being able to share a house with alts and use mail would be great. There is no reason not to as it is already possible to share an fc house and send items and gils via an fc chest. It could also reduce the demand on housing.
they wont implementing skip msq for alt char because they want you to buy skip msq in mogstation store
eh if you already have one character do the msq I think they should allow you to skip it if you decide on making an alt. Although its very obvious they wouldnt do that since they sell msq skip books at mogstation. However I would at least get them to make more alt friendly features such as being able to mail to your alts
I don't mind doing the msq again on an alt, because it's honestly the reason I create alts in the first place, wanting to experience the story fresh with a new character. But certain things would be nice to have account wide. Like full access to the calamity salvager and event items you unlocked, achievement rewards, shared housing.
Basically anything I have to grind excessively for, I do not wanna do again. Or getting event items that are impossible to get again and can only be obtained through the mogstation.
I have a few alts I'm slogging through MSQ. I didn't care for MSQ on my main, and I still don't care for it now, but with my main being all 90s, it gives me something to do.
I refuse to buy skips because they are too expensive for what they are and for how many alts I have, as well as the fact that you'd still have to play through EW even after you bought one.
The QoL thing I want in regards to alts is the ability to transfer your character and HUD settings to them. I know you're able to do it on PC in an unintended way, but there's no way to do it on PS. Let us import our HUD settings on our alts through an in-game feature, dammit.
I only see alts only for:
- Playing in a different region that DC travel can't reach with your main.
- If you are a raider and need to funnel more time gated gear to your static by using a alt.
- Replaying the MSQ because New game+ just doesn't feel the same.
- If someone really doesn't want to talk to their friends but wants to play the game.
I have a alt on Materia to help a friend with queue times and story progression, and a alt to replay the story. I only log on when they need help, or if I want to spend time with the story.
Just keep in mind, (No one wants to hear this.) SE has services like character transfers, fantasias, name changers, and even story skip services to cater to these needs. Only difference is that it costs real life money for these. If you don't wanna spend extra money; you have to do the work yourself. I don't think its logical for a business to axe their services because of demands like these.
I would love if they implement the system WoW has. I love this game, but very alt unfriendly. I don't want to unlock all the jobs on 1 character.
I do like unlocking all classes on one character. then again I used to play a defunct mmo that let you have all the jobs, and had many alts.(you can even switch class mid Duty, long as there wasn't combat.)
it also let you have a accountwide storage for specific glamour, as well as Statted Gear.[but only I'd some higher rarities]
That said, I'd want it to fit XIV.
Like adjustments to Relics if you've completed their final step<and or all the Relics of a expac>[eureka could be one of the few/only exceptions, since the journey is kinda worth it.]
I'd definitely buy nearly all the mogstore items if they were Accountwide.(course it would then require a rebalancing of shop prices, but at that point I'd accept it, as long as it's not beyond the edge of reasonable)
The thing with alts, accountwide, and other adjacent things.
as one thing improves, others get affected.
Just as an overhaul of the glamour/armoire system would pay well to such things.
All boats float.
[Which is to say, if all at once, it is undoubtedly a monumental task. but since it's all Interrelated, any improvement or QoL would eventually lower the bar even further. Specially with many adjacent things. and not in the way some imagine/argue in different threads. if they build it to eventually make the task reachable, it will happen. if they don't. they'll hear and reach an impasse of their own making, just like with certain content/activities/systems. being held back when requiring other things to function.]
msq and lvl skips on the online story 07
i think its pretty self explanatory why ffxiv will never be alt friendly. how else would they make money off mogstation story / level skips?
Go check out Lost Ark to see how they have a handle on RMT, you are living in Paradise compared to there lol
The only things I’d want for alts are mog station glamours account wide and being able to mail things to my alts or have one account wide retainer. Not specifically related to alt friendliness, but the new game + is disappointing because it doesn’t give any exp. I know there are lots of other ways to level, but it would be fun to level up other jobs in my favorite expansions.
IMO. The things I'd like would be.
1. All characters on the same world sharing a private home if purchased by the player.
2. The minion/mount/triple triad card/orchestrion/emote lists being shared account wide. Just drop some allegan coins or something small for repeat quest rewards.
3. Friendlist/blacklist account wide
4. A small shared storage safe accessible from Inn rooms or a furnishing that can be placed in a house/apartment that all characters on the same world share.
All I want is my mogstation stuff in all my alts...
This hurts.
Final Fantasy XI allows you to send items and Gil to whoever's character name you type in to the Delivery Box, so if you wanted to you could send anyone just about anything.
This is handy for Alt's as it allows you to also send Alt characters on your account-Bound items usually not tradeable.
We need some way to share stuff with Alt's in this game.
They prevent alt friendliness/QoL so you can buy boosters and other services.
It's called peak demand pricing. :^)

While I'm sure this is part of the consideration, personally I can't really hold it against them given that you can have every job on one character and both World and DC travel to join groups. When I create alts in other games, it's entirely because that's the only way to level up other classes. It doesn't even become a factor in FFXIV.
While that is your choice and there is obviously nothing wrong with it, many people enjoy leveling alts because they want to play the story again with a different feel.
Playing the story again from the start, fighting your way through the duties at the intended level and on a specific class isn't the same as going back to NG+ when you've already done everything, the class you're doing it as is in shiny Savage gear and looks and feels completely overpowered compared to the quests. Nor do you get a different character with a different race, name, gender and look for it, you'd have to Fantasia/ name change.
Seeing as the story is a big part of FFXIV it shouldn't come as a surprise that people give it more importance in terms of RP and want their character to match their current vision of what they're playing the story as. I know that some people enjoy making a whole group of little WoLs they gradually send through the story and have completely different head canon for each of them. NG+ doesn't deliver here not does playing all classes on one character. And some people simply enjoy leveling classes for the sake of levelling them or taking care of a character from scratch.
But they're still facing limitations like not being able to access their main's house, not being able to mail their other characters, not using mounts/ outfits they have acquired for real money and so on.
There's very little value in force-replays of a MSQ that only forces you to replay it on an alternate character because SE sells the skip. There should be a choice, regardless, that doesn't cost either hundreds of hours or extra money for the simple desire of having an alt character for a change of pace, or to roleplay with, or to do raids on, etc...
If you make alts and want to replay the story, then the choice would be present.
If you make alts and don't want to replay the story, the choice should be present.
Story's a focus of the game, yes, but it's not like it's the Odyssey or something I'd be interested in experiencing more than once - personally.
That alone would be a massive benefit for alt-friendliness, though. Sending mail to my alts would be nice. Shared glamour. Things most games have had since 2012.
They should just make stuff account-wide, but knowing SE they'll limit that stuff to deluxe cash shop items or pre-order bonuses. They'll blame the amount of bits their servers can handle, but we all know deep down it's a marketing ploy so they can sell more services and cash shop items.
