The multi-tier system addresses that.
To use the wind example:
You could walk around with a wind elemental for free, Valefor for some MP drain, Garuda for heavy MP drain, but Chaos would only appear in an instanced environment.

I like your idea as well Mushy -- although, I don't really want to see 30 copies of the more epic summons (ie Bahamut, Odin, etc..) running around together. Hence my push for a tiered system.
On the topic of flash, or movies.. what I posted is really my first youtube animation [if you can believe it]. I work as a motion graphics designer for a cable tv station, but I haven't really posted anything on the internets before.
Too many restrictions imo. One summon in the zone/area nearby and having to restart every single time you get hit aren't good ideas. I'd prefer a simple pet class or simply swapping your character out for a summon of your choice and fight with it.
@OP
No doubt about it, that is a great video.
I think your idea restricts the players, especially the Summoner.
I really like how the summons worked in Final Fantasy XII more than any other Final Fantasy game. For example;
They have a time limit for how long they stay out, instead of eating away the Summoner MP. They can use their full power before leaving, or if they're low in health. This is how I would like it
I think ffxiv need something different than a "2hr ability"
I like it, though the realm transition thing might be a bit much. Just having them burst out of the ground like say Ifrit does in FF10 would suffice I think, or maybe ride a thunder strike in. Stuff like that.
I wouldn't mind the single attack thing instead of a pet job as well, but they better be worth the effort to acquire and cast. FF12's summons were utterly worthless.
What else would they have to cast though? I mean, sitting there and chaining summons sounds costly MP wise. Seems like they would have to be combined with a buff job as well just to make them viable if they can't do anything but one shots. Maybe a Time Mage Summoner ;D
That Video was SO COOL I love it!!!!!!
I have a feeling people that are adamant about having summons as a pet never played SMN in FFXI. The system was broken and extremely inefficient. If S-E were to improve upon it? Sure, bring em out as pets. But many many years as a summoner in FFXI has made me very skeptical when it comes to S-E's ability to implement pet jobs correctly.
Edit: Loved your video btw. Quite a brilliant idea i think.
I'm pretty sure there isn't gonna be a summoner job. If you pay attention to the plot it's moving in the direction of us gaining the ability to summon in order to fight the empire. Everyone who walks the path of the twelve has the ability to summon. Stop thinking oldschool and start thinking Guardian Force. Just thought I'd point that out since I notice alot of people pining for full summoner job and in my mind everyone having thier own avatar is a hell of alot cooler then any pet jorb.

Liked the idea, thought I'd share it with my ls man. You make any more of these, i'll be on the watch!
The poor mandragoras T_T
I loved the video xD
If they truly are not going to have pet classes I wouldnt mind something similar. But if they ever decide to add pet classes, maybe something a bit different.
I don't like the idea of quick Summon, the quick summon should only be for very powerful beast you can use for 1 thing only.
The concept was to effectively create an environment where we could summon a very powerful beast. FFXI's system didn't do proper justice to the power of the avatars.
Sidenote: Perhaps I'll need to make another animation to more effectively communicate to people how the instanced summon is compatible with pet summons. No matter how many times I point it out, people still post about how they don't want to give up pet summons.
I think what many of the people need/want is a separate pet class (ie BST, PUP). Primals/Espers/Avatars aren't pets. They are supposed to be demi-gods~like entities of immeasurable power. The more powerful the summon is, the sillier it looks when following a player around like a trained dog.
This is why we couldn't summon Bahamut in FFXI.
Very good video. Yes, yes, yes, love the idea! EXCEPT, SMN should still be a pet class. (Where they stay summoned, follow you around, etc.) --oh and please allow them to be summoned in cities, please -- Also, the instanced/ultimate attack can only be when the summon reaches enough TP or with low Hp and once its used, you suffer a cool down. (Similar to 11's 2-Hour.) I also agree with the different Tier's from the OP. Good job Zan! I can't wait for SMN! <3
