Story behind changing to Au Ra?

Sorry, I might have missed the issue but what was this problem with the lvl 50 CUL quest? I know what the quest is as Ive done it but I'm not sure the issue. Having quests set at certain points in the game timeline is one of the ways to make long term story development feasible without having to do massive rewrites every time you have major shifts in the Main story.

Either that or they need to treat side quests and main scenario quest with no cross over at all. Personally I prefer integration of the stories over being able to do them in any order.

The CUL 50 thing is off-topic, here. Please keep all such discussion in the proper thread. I apologize for mentioning it; it was not intended to spill the debate over here, but instead as an example of my concern for the direction SE decided to take.

So to get back onto the topic I don't think there is a story behind you personally changing into an Au Ra, but you can RP whatever you like. I already know what mine will be. I am actually a sleeper agent for the Xaela and as I walk around in the ancient lands of Dravania and read all the stuff in the sharlayan library I will recover my memories and reclaim my true form as a warrior who was sent glamoured to foster parents to gather knowledge and fulfill my destiny as the Agito who will unite the warring tribes for a glorious conqurst that will be remembered for millenia.

You could always rationalize it by saying that a skilled alchemist in your homeland gives you a potion that causes your outward appearance to be Hyur/Elezen so that while YOU can see your horns/scales/tail, the citizens of Eorzea see you as a Hyur Female or Elezen Male.

Or you could consider that everything you see is a retelling of past events thanks to the Echo, and that your character is just an unreliable narrator

I change my character's race and appearance all the time (way too much in fact). I've been all races and clans, so I've just come to think of my character as a shape changer. This change will just be another in her repertoire of different appearances.

Personally, I don't mind changing Lin's backstory to match a wandering Au Ra (Auri?). I was never happy with the one I had for her to begin with, and I'm happy to ignore any inconsistencies since I'm 'not from Eorza' to begin with.

Since the Ishgardians are suspicious bastards no matter what race you are you aren't really at a disadvantage there, and they can't outright kill you since (if memory serves) you're sent there as a representative from a group they're asking for help from. I may need to refresh my memory on that one though.

EDIT: Refreshed my memory, and you're there with Alphinaud and Cid for the airship. I don't remember the sequence of events exactly, not a lot of cuts from that, but either way you're with a known and, presumably, respected Scion originally Sharlayan. So it's reasonable to assume that they're willing to give you a, grudging, chance to do what you need to and get out again. It's not like they could've anticipated you would catch a Dravinian High Inquisitor or anything...

And I'll cut Yugiri some slack since she started out saying she was from Doma, and may not have wanted to out you as originating from Doma/Othard once you two met since that might have put some suspicion on your integrity. Being that it's very firmly part of the Garlean Empire atm. Which is pretty much the very last thing anyone needed.

It's just like how nobody comments if you're a male Miqo'te or Duskwight Elezen. There aren't many of either that live public lives, but they still exist and people know this and don't treat PCs differently as a result. I think it's kind of like that.

You're the only one that exists lorewise though. Notice how it's "warrior of light" and not "warriors of light." So even if everyone changes to Au Ra, storywise it'll probably only be you and Yugiri in Ul'dah/Gridania/LL.

In my own headcanon, my character decides with everything that has happened, changing her appearance will be useful for moving around without attracted unwanted attention. After acquiring a rare vial of Fantasia and learning about the Au'ra from Yugiri, she ends up changing herself into one after consuming the potion. She'll also have learned Au'ra mannerisms from her and change her name to match her new appearance before heading to Ishgard. Though only time will tell if she'll stay in her new body or eventually find a way to change back.

At this point I can only hope they have those naming conventions ready to go sometime this week so I'll at least have a few days to come up with something lore appropriate while playing through the story.

Personally with my own lore, I created an extensive back story for my character, I won't change the race of my character, she is fully a Miqo'te female. I can see no reason lore wise with in her own story to change. I do plan on creating a new character that will be an Au Ra. She already has a place in the backstory for my character. That said everyone can have e their own reason for why they change their current character to another race. It can be their own story whether it is cannon based or not.

Yugiri hides her face, only in part because she is Au Ra. The main reason, is because she is a Doman - and the Doman Village was destroyed. The only surviving Domans are the ones who escaped to Eorzea.

Not true; Yugiri herself states she's wearing her mask because she doesn't want to weird people out, and there are Domans besides her in Eorzea who do not wear masks (the refugees on the boat, the ninja who come to hunt Karasu Redbeak). There are Domans left, but like Ala Mhigo their homeland has been conquered and turned into a Garlean province... it's kind of why Yugiri led the refugees on their exodus in the first place.

On the Fantasia thing--Wasn't it stated (in a round about way) at fan fest that Fantasia creates an illusion/hallucination for the user (strictly lore-wise, anyway. Obviously other players see the change)? In other words, the NPCs don't react to a race/gender change because they don't see a race/gender change, the user is just living a giant fantasy, or did I misunderstand the explanation? (Which I can not seem to find anymore so i can't double check it). Fantasia is basically purely meta, right?

I think the only people a logical explanation for race change would be necessary for would be RPers who don't want to completely reboot their character after a race change, but I think generally, they manage to come up with something that's not absolutely outrageous or outlandish.

If memory serves me right, it's sort of a "your mind makes it real" thing. The PC changes their perception of their physical self, and reality rewrites itself to fit.

Let's not get into the quantum mechanics of how that would work, OK? It's magic, a wizard did it.

I've heard that Fantasia was addressed at the Fan Fest, but I've never seen any confirmation of what was exactly stated there, written or in video, just mentions that it was addressed in some form or another. I tend to assume that it's a powerful and rare potion that changes your body and warps people's memories to make it so you always appeared that way to them. Because magic or something.

At the end of the day, I just prefer the change race explanation (since I already have a back story) over the always an Au'ra, just glamored as a Miqo'te explanation (since that would require a new backs tory and I'm honestly not 100% sure I'll stick to Au'ra.) Although the latter probably makes a bit more sense.

The Fully body glamour thing could be used still, an assumed form means that you had an assumed identity and were either lying about your true intentions. You can then after the change state your true intentions, be it pretending to be a wandering scholar seeking new lands or allies for your people, but learning that those around you accept those who are different you decide to be fully honest with them. Thus no longer needing the glamour, easiest way is keep out information you wouldn't normally give out, or make vague mention of where you came from originally in your glamoured form.

Isn't Yugiri a princess or a noble from Doma? Maybe that's why she had to hide her face or something.
