This is an MMO dude. Make some friends.
It's going to cost resources and affect the eternal bonds.
Were this implemented we would have two options 1)Eternal Bond with a player 2)Being served NPC without free will ("Of course I want to eternal bond with you, I am programmed that way")
Players tend to seek the path of least resistence and that is in this case the option 2)
By allowing players to eternal bond with NPCs it's going to make life even harder for people who don't want to spend time with scripted slave, and discourage players on the fence from even trying to look for a real person - because instant gratification.
What about the eternal bond booking? Are the solo weddings going to eat space in these? It's already difficult to find a good time for the bond, and that's two players per a slot.
What about the eternal bond items? Are you going to expect getting these for half price - it happens a lot that one player pays the bills.
What about players with real EB partners? Will they have to unbond to use this feature? Or will they be able to cheat on their partner?
The player bond and NPC bond are connected and it affects the social behavior of the player base.
Why not?
Lots of people like to role playing in this game, myself included.
I don't use my retainer in my RP, but I know a lot of friends that use them and they customized them to be like a waifu/husbandu.
So, why not?
Of course it's going to cost resources - any new feature added to the game is going to. However, it doesn't have to affect Eternal Bonds - and if it were added it most likely wouldn't. There's nothing that says you have to marry your NPC in the same cathedral as the current player Eternal Bonds do - and even if you did, it's not the case that it would have to work the same way. It could simply be a cutscene, rather than actually reserving the instance.
As for discouraging players from looking for a real person - that kind of thing was never encouraged in the first place. It's an option available for players who want it, not an in-game goal that SE wants players to try to accomplish. Your statements make it sound as though you believe that finding an Eternal Bond partner is something that every player should be trying to do, and that this addition would "distract" them from finding a proper partner. That is simply not the case.
Again, I need to emphasize that these are two completely different things. Players who want to hook up with a waifu/husbando and players who want an Eternal Bond with a player have completely different desires they're trying to fulfill. It's as ridiculous as accusing a married man who plays a dating sim as being unfaithful to his wife. In fact, if "marry-an-NPC" were added to the game, I strongly suspect that a large number of Eternally Bonded players would explore that content as well. They would not feel as though they were being unfaithful to their Bond partner - because they're not. An NPC is a chunk of computer code, not a real mate, even if they're programmed to act like one.
Edit: To sum up, NPC marriage should not be thought of as a replacement for Eternal Bond. It and Eternal Bond are not competing features. They are separate features. Some players may be interested in one but not the other, some will be interested in both, and some in neither. They do not need to compete for resources (and probably won't), with the possible exception of competing for developers' attention - but that kind of competition exists for ANY feature as whiners on the forums will be happy to inform you. ("Why did the devs waste time on X when they could have been doing Y???") Eternal Bond, though, is pretty much a complete product as it is, and there's no reason developers need to add more to it at this point, so even there, it's not competing with NPC marriage.
Does anyone else remember the first April Fool's Day after ARR released, when Yoshida and the team teased that fake mini-game where you could build relationship rep with a Scion of your choosing and become romantically involved with them?
This?

You never know, a similar thing might be in the works, just not msq npcs. Afterall, Lords of Verminion started off as an April Fool's joke ... now it became a reality.
I'd want to date Estinien.
Or one [or both] of the Dark Monk Twins...
o.O
Wut
Estinien would be high on my list if that were the case. If only so I can swoon at his heavenly voice.
But, I think having characters unique to the romance quests would be easier in that you being romantic with an MSQ character may hinder the narrative later on. I mean, imagine if you were dating a Scion and 2.55 happened. I'd be a bit more bent on getting my lover back ASAP, and anyone with Haurchefant or Ysayle would lose their minds.
Having NPCs outside the main scenario would also be a great opportunity to expand on lore, especially for the different race's lifestyles and backgrounds.
@Ametrine: I agree. I would love to have the option for NPCs like Haurchefant but I am already heartbroken by what happened, no need to break it even further. And I am also not sure if they would make every NPC adventure sexual. Could you imagine the rage if a character is only interested in men/women?
So it would be way better to just allow retainers to be romanced thus having no problems with any gender or the narrative. Make it a cutscene with other NPCs as guest, no need to use the existing wedding for it. I am already bonded to another player and was bonded before that also..the first one did not end well, and people change so it would be nice to just marry a NPC and dont have to worry about any stress. Heck if we could customize our squad we could just marry one of them ;) since we will run dungeons with them some time in the future.
The quote above is exactly what Yoshi-P explained in an interview a few months ago when it comes to NPCs from MSQ. Players will get very attached to certain characters, and if they die, well, Yoshi-P and his crew better hide. As much as I really want to marry Ser Aymeric, it's never going to happen because of story plot reasons XD (However, since Yoshi also stated that it's the player's choice to decide on who they fall in love with and what kind of relationship they have, *coughsaymericandrenareacouplecoughs*)
As for us marrying our retainers, eh I don't know. I never had that kind of feeling towards my retainer.
Her death was pretty quick. It was like 'oh hai there, I'm BFFs with you guys! Long time no see! Let's have lots of adven- BLEG!'
*Cough, only there to make up for the fact they put Minfillia in the Mogstation when she should have been the reward for completing the 3.4 chain, cough*
Moenbryda is sadly an underdeveloped plot device. She came, she left her mark, and she went out like a hero. The fact Urianger and Yda are still mourning her even now shows she at least had some genuine importance. Not that it makes her death suck less or anything.
Of course, I'm going to miss Minfillia despite how much hate she gets.
We could just use the power of I M A G I N A T I O N.
The bond between me and my luscious twin Roegadyn retainer ladies goes beyond marriage. They'd live, fight, and die for me, as long as the pay is good. I almost wrote a fanfic where my character was ambushed by a lone Garlean soldier, and my character, rather than kill him, reposed him into slumber and had his two retainers inflict mind-warpingly painful torture methods on the Garlean, to interrogate him on the whereabouts of his leader.
But that fanfic never happened.
Sure, I mean why not?
Yea i really want to get marrie with my retainer as well, she is an amazing Au Ra
Hmm. I never looked at my retainers that way. If anything, I'm always questioning what my BTN retainer does for 18 hours when she brings me back an apricot instead of the minion I asked for. I'm constantly threatening to fire her, but then she throws the sad face/guilt trip thing, and I just can't do it. She's evil, and I know it's passive-aggressiveness for making her go after rare seeds throughout the day.
That's an abuse of power, your retainer is your employee!! Sexual assault suit coming at you.
Wouldn't this be kinda like marrying your hand?
I surely want to marry one of my beautiful retainers or alt characters!...
SE would make more money out of weddings by allowing us to do this rather than waiting for lone players to find their ideal soulmate around the Internet, but hey, it's up to them to decide which is more profitable!...
Unless you and your partner are a couple in real life I highly doubt it could be better than marrying your ... hand!... :p
I would marry my retainer so I can get mount and outfit :)
I would love for them to waifu warp to me so i can empty my inventory and tell em to bugger off again. I fully support this. SE make it happen.
